Titans forward Mark Minichiello set to see out career on Gold Coast
THE Titans are set to make an offer to foundation forward Mark Minichiello which will see the 30-year-old finish his career on the Gold Coast.
Minichiello is off contract at the end of the season and there was speculation he could follow former teammate Anthony Laffranchi to England.
But Titans football manager Scott Clark made it clear yesterday the club did not want to lose the popular Minichiello, who bagged two tries in an 18-16 win over the Broncos in a trial at Pizzey Park on Saturday.
"Mini reckons he should have got three," Clark said.
"He's set for a big year and is determined to hold his spot in the starting pack.
"We want to get his future sorted out sooner rather than later and I know that's the way he feels as well. He'll probably sit down with (managing director) Michael Searle and Carty (coach, John Cartwright) in the next few weeks."
Minichiello, a product of Liverpool Catholic Club in Sydney, made his NRL debut for the Roosters in 2002 alongside older brother Anthony.
He played for Souths from 2003 to 2006 before heading to Queensland. Minichiello now has 197 NRL games under his belt (111 for the Titans).
Despite the win over the Broncos, the mood was sombre in the Titans camp yesterday, with the prospect of South Sydney signing Beau Falloon being sidelined for at least three months by a biceps injury.
Winger Kevin Gordon also needs scans after he injured the knee that required a reconstruction last year and utility star Greg Bird is also battling a biceps injury that ruled him out of the Broncos match.
"With Beau it's a case of fearing the worst and hoping for the best," Clark said.
"He went in for a tackle and his arm was slung back in the collision. It didn't look good.
"Everyone here was excited for him as he tried to cement a first-grade spot. Now he could be out for the long term.
"With Kevin, it's a case of being cautious. There is a little bit of movement in the knee, but the medical staff say that is normal after such an operation.
"Birdy's injury is not major, but he will be sidelined for two to three weeks. It's not a function problem, just a pain thing."
It seems likely Kayne Lawton and Matt Srama will be named in the Titans' 17-man squad for the round 1 NRL match against North Queensland in Townsville on March 3.
The Titans and Cowboys will play a trial in Mackay on Saturday.

He's played his best footy here, great to see he has an opportunity to finish his career here.
There should be a clause in his new contract where he gets a bonus for not dropping the ball though.

When he's hot he's hot and when he drops the ball he's not.
Four reasons to escape to Queensland: Sun, Surf, Sand & the Titans.
ive found since we starting giving him a breather, hes handling has been a lot better.
and ive got so much respect for him, he could have dropped his bundle when we've signed Bird and now Myles to maybe take his spot, but hes obviously worked super hard and isnt going to get dropped to the bench if he can help it!
Go mini go
mini is definitely a talented player but he really needs to work on ball handling. i think his biggest strength is impact and i think he needs to realise that he has to do whats best for the team.
My mates call him Spring board chest due to the way the ball flies off it
I am a bit out of touch but is Mark Minichiello injured? Noticed he isn't in the team this week
Thanks-pity
Feel sorry for Mini that he is out of the team. How is he going in QLD Cup?
2013 - Sezer's breakout year
Mini is terrible, hence he is playing reserve grade. He should be retired.
