    Totally in agreement
Having Redcliffe in would cause us the least encroachment and I think strategically is best for the game as it gives the Sunshine Coast and Northern Brisbane a team to support.

We will take care of the South

An extra team in SE QLD is inevitable. This is the bid we should support.

Wayne Bennett gives a pretty comprehensive endorsement of the Dolphins for the NRL.

Strong mail for second Brisbane team with Wayne Bennett coach.

    BACK TO BRISBANE FOR BENNETT
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

The independent commission meets next month to further explore expansion opportunities. The mail is we’ll have a second Brisbane team for the 2023 season.

Old super coach Wayne Bennett will be the man in demand, whichever organisation gets the licence. The timing is perfect, with Bennett finishing at the Rabbitohs at the end of next season and handing over to Jason Demetriou.

It leaves him free in 2022 to sign players and set up the new franchise.

It also allows the new club 12 months to chase corporate support around having Bennett as the face of the club. It will be huge for Queensland rugby league.

Bennett would give them an opening with the media and corporate. Already set up the grudge factor with the Broncos. Bennett has been vocal for the Dolphins.

Fortunately the Titans seem to be on the up. It wouldn't be fun seeing a 4th QLD team appear when we were struggling. Hope our success continues.

    Might be a
bit early for them but the Sunshine Coast community has shown great support at all games this year. Maybe Redcliffe will take few games up the coast

I agree. I hope to see some games up there. It'd be a nice road trip up from Brissie. Just over one hour.

It makes sense to have a team north of Brisbane and south of Brisbane. Both can push in each compass direction.

Bombers must have a few mates at the Courier Mail to justify this sports cover.

But actually Bennett never mentions the Bombers but only any new Brisbane team. And the story only mentions the Bombers talking to a third party of Bennett.

While here is Bennett a couple months ago categorically banking the Dolphins bid. I uploaded it to YouTube for your viewing pleasure.

NRL expansion: Announcement on second Brisbane team due by the middle of the year
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

The NRL is committed to adding a second Brisbane team to the competition, with an announcement coming sooner than you think.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys wants a second Brisbane team in the NRL. And what Peter V’landys wants, Peter V’landys gets.

An announcement will be made mid-year for a 2023 launch, putting prospective franchises on full alert as the NRL looks to deliver another team to the Brisbane market.

It will be one of the 20 biggest storylines to dominate the NRL in 2021.

Although a 17th team won’t generate a ninth game for each regular-season round, free-to-air TV networks in upcoming negotiations need to know there will be four teams north of the border.

The Courier Mail first revealed back on February 16, 2020, that the NRL would be a 17-team competition for the 2023 season, when the current broadcast deal expires.

While careful not to negatively impact Brisbane and the Gold Coast, V’landys is keen for the Broncos and a second Brisbane team to take a stranglehold over rival codes the AFL, rugby and football’s A-League in the Sunshine State.

A number of southeast Queensland franchises remain hopeful of securing an NRL licence.

Among them are the Brisbane Bombers, Brisbane Firehawks (Easts Tigers), Western Corridor (Ipswich) and Redcliffe Dolphins.

A June announcement would give the winning bid 18 months to get an NRL franchise up and running. The NRL’s youngest club, the Gold Coast Titans, were awarded the game’s 16th licence in May 2005, which gave them a similar time frame to prepare for their first season in 2007.

The Courier Mail revealed the Dolphins had ramped up their plans in recent months, claiming they were “ready to go” and we’re launching a campaign for the public to be involved in the naming of the club.

The club will retain the Dolphins moniker but remove the Redcliffe name if successful to appeal to a wider section of fans.

Dolphins bid chief Terry Reader said the franchise was ready to tender for a licence if the NRL decides to pursue expansion.

“We are in a very good position,” he said.

“We have launched a website – Dolphins NRL – to cover everything about us and frequently asked questions.

“We have put out everything about how we will be set up, how it will work, where we will play. We have launched our own membership and merchandise range for the bid.

“We’re meeting with the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast mayors in the coming months to talk about our plans as well as the Queensland Rugby League.

“We’re making sure we’re putting things in place and doing the things we need to so we’re set to go when the time comes.”

It is so logical to put a franchise at Reddy. The timing is good for us too as mentioned above and the biggest losers will be the AFL.

Bombers and Ipswich bid teams merge to form the Brisbane Jets as NRL expansion battle explodes
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

The NRL’s expansion race has taken a dramatic twist with the Brisbane Bombers and Ipswich’s western-corridor sensationally joining forces in a $12 million super bid known as the Brisbane Jets.

The new consortium has reached agreement-in-principle after months of secret talks to form a powerful joint-venture bidding to become the NRL’s 17th outfit — and Brisbane’s second team to rival the Broncos.

As revealed by News Corp last year, ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys targeted expansion for 2023, with the NRL to begin due diligence next month with a view to announcing the code’s 17th team in June or July.

Now the NRL’s expansion battle has exploded, with the Bombers and Ipswich burying a 10-year rivalry to form a merger they believe will blow contenders Redcliffe and Easts Firehawks out of the race for a 17th licence.

The parties are in the advanced stage of formulating constitutional structures but believe the name Brisbane Jets is the brand that can win over the ARL Commission to become Queensland‘s fourth NRL team.

The creation of the new entity is a critical development in the expansion saga, with the battle for the NRL‘s 17th licence now ostensibly a race in three between Redcliffe, the Firehawks and the Brisbane Jets.

Bombers shareholder Nick Livermore confirmed top-secret negotiations with Ipswich bid chief Steve Johnson have led to the birth of the Jets alliance.

“We’ve agreed in principle to joining forces,” Livermore said.

“The Bombers and Ipswich are moving together as one and this is the perfect model for the NRL’s 17th team.

“We’ve been in talks for about six months.

“There’s been a lot to work through but we’ve found common ground and if the ARL Commission makes a call in June or July, we’re ready to go as Brisbane’s second team.

“If the ARL Commission looks at all the metrics around growth, participation, sustainability, financial security and creating a genuine derby with the Broncos without cannibalising the current NRL market, it will take a special bid to overtake this.

“There is no other bid that will compete with the Brisbane Jets.”

The Jets will target the likes of Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bennett to be their foundation coach should they clinch an NRL licence for 2023.

Bellamy held talks with Bombers bosses 18 months ago in relation to a possible coaching director’s role.

Former NRL head of football and ex-Titans chief operating officer Brian Canavan is operating in a consultancy capacity, working on the Jets‘ bid document and holding talks with ARL Commission figures.

The Jets will be based in the Ipswich region, which will boast 19,000 registered players by 2026, and will also leverage the Toowoomba catchment which helped produce NRL champion Johnathan Thurston.

The Bombers nickname was widely criticised but Livermore believes the ARL Commission will be impressed with the new Jets branding and bid document.

“There was some feedback that there might be push-back on the Bombers name for an NRL club, so we’ve removed that hurdle,” he said.

“The aviation brand is a great way to entice young people to get involved in rugby league so the Brisbane Jets is an exciting brand.

“I have a lot of respect for Steve Johnson. We have spent 20 years of our professional lives trying to grow the game of rugby league in Brisbane.

“To align our values together makes sense, we are both truly passionate about rugby league dominating and we can do that as the NRL’s 17th team.”

Johnson lauded the strength of the Brisbane Jets.

“Coming together, we are a super bid,” he said.

“The ARL Commission won‘t find a more comprehensive model for a second Brisbane team.

“It’s exciting, it unites the community strength of the Ipswich western-corridor bid with the commercial expertise of what was the Brisbane Bombers bid.

“Peter V’landys has spoken about participation. Our bid will deliver on that and we will grow the NRL playing base more than any other bid.

“The Brisbane Jets theme is easy to market and is resonates with the Ipswich region’s proud involvement with the defence forces.

“It is the perfect branding for the NRL ... this bid is the undeniable standout.”

This is great news. I've been trashing the Bombers name on their facebook page for years and years. And like many of us, have suggested they team up with the Ipswich bid. I also noted how woefully quiet the "Western Corridor" bid has been in recent history.

I still don't think they are stronger than the Dolphins. But they really are throwing down the gauntlet.

My ideal is to see both teams eventually admitted.

We have the Gold Coast, then the Broncos in Brisbane, with a team south that includes Ipswich, Logan and Toowoomba. And a team north that includes Moreton Bay Region and the Sunshine Coast.

    Spicy.

Benny and the Jets? Two backers combine for expansion super bid
    https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/nrl/

Two Brisbane consortiums vying to be the NRL’s 17th team have united to form a super bid, circling Wayne Bennnett to be the inaugural coach of the newly-formed Brisbane Jets.

After several months of negotiations behind closed doors, the Brisbane Bombers and western corridor bids dramatically combined forces on Wednesday, insisting they had reached an agreement to form a new franchise which would “tick every box”.

The Australian Rugby League Commission has prioritised a fourth Queensland NRL team for 2023, with a decision expected to be made mid-way through the year. Redcliffe and Easts Firehawks are also in the running to be the NRL’s newest team.

But the strength of the Brisbane Jets bid is likely to have significant appeal for the ARLC, given it will cover a sprawling catchment to the west and alleviate concerns over the Bombers moniker.

“This collective force certainly removes any of those concerns,” Bombers backer Nick Livermore said.

“One thing I’ve admired about [Ipswich bid boss] Steve [Johnson] in the whole process, even though there’s been competitive tension with our bids, both of us want to see the game succeed. And I think that’s where we found the mutual connection once we started talking about the opportunity for the game.

“We shared a bit of frustration over the length of the process, combined we’ve put 20 years into this. It just ticks every box now.”

Bennett is an obvious candidate to head up Brisbane’s new franchise, whether it be the Jets or one of the other two bids. The Bombers spoke to representatives of Bennett, who is in his final year coaching South Sydney in 2021, late last year about the prospect of returning to Queensland and taking on the Broncos.

“The Broncos don’t have a saturation on Brisbane,” Livermore said. “We’ve always maintained under the Bombers brand there’s at least one more that loves the game that isn’t supporting Brisbane.

“Coming together we can’t be everything to everyone, but we can certainly be the largest footprint geographically with a real rugby league focus and sustainable business model.

“I just want to see a game shown in Brisbane every weekend. Through no fault of their own they haven’t been able to do that. If we have a year like last year where they struggled the game is under represented. It’s the first time the Broncos have been in that position. You can’t rely on one club to carry a whole city.

“Once we get the opportunity to present I think it will be hard for them to ignore the overall benefit to rugby league. I’m really excited to get in front of the Commission in the next few months and show what we’ve been working on collectively for 20 years. It will be a fantastic bid that trumps ours.”

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys has previously said he could see no reason why the NRL’s newest team couldn’t be up and running by 2023, which will be in time for the NRL’s newest broadcast deal.
