NRL Magic Round Brisbane tickets on sale

Fans can watch every minute of the NRL’s biggest festival of rugby league, NRL Magic Round Brisbane, delivered by KFC, for as little as $89.

After being postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NRL Magic Round Brisbane will return in 2021 as a three-day festival featuring 16 teams, eight matches and 272 of the best NRL players at Suncorp Stadium.

Three-day passes are now on sale for Magic Round, in Round 10, May 14-16, starting at $89 for adult Club Members and $229 for families.

ARL Commissioner Kate Jones joined the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP - Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Innovation and Minister for Sport, along with Juliet Alabaster, General Manager, Tourism, Business & Major Events, Brisbane Economic Development Agency, as well as player representatives to officially launch NRL Magic Round Brisbane.

Ms Jones said NRL Brisbane Magic Round would be an incredibly important round in 2021 – particularly following the postponement of last season’s round.

“Magic Round Brisbane really represents a large part of what we missed last year – fans in the stands watching the best entertainment rugby league can offer,” Ms Jones said.

“It’s a festival like no other – 272 players from all 16 of our Clubs all in the one venue.

“There is no sporting event like it in this country.

“Magic Round Brisbane was such a huge success in 2019 and we will build on it in 2021.

“It will be the ‘don’t miss’ event for those who enjoy fast-paced and entertaining rugby league combined with entertainment, fun activities and a fan experience like no other.”

Ms Jones thanked the Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council and KFC for their ongoing support of Magic Round.

“After the events of last year, this is a wonderful opportunity for our supporters and members to get away and enjoy a break while watching the best that our sport can offer,” Ms Jones said.

“This will be the first time Magic Round Brisbane has been a three-day format and we’ve kept prices affordable for fans and families.

“For the locals, the Queensland teams will headline each day; Brisbane Broncos on Friday, the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday and the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday. The Sunday afternoon match will also feature Melbourne Storm, who made Queensland their home on the way to the Premiership in 2020.”

Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the NRL Magic Round Brisbane was the perfect excuse for footy fans to book a Queensland holiday.

“Brisbane will be the centre of the Australian Rugby League universe again in May with the return of the NRL’s Magic Round,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Queensland is Good to Go, so pack a bag and book a holiday to Brisbane to experience the ultimate footy festival at Suncorp Stadium.

“Last year was challenging for tourism and events but Queensland’s response to the global COVID-19 pandemic meant were able to stage COVID-safe events sooner and become Australia’s hub of elite sport.

“Events continue to play a big role in our COVID-19 economic recovery with this year’s NRL Magic Round expected to attract more than 29,000 football fans to Queensland and support local jobs by contributing almost $22 million to Brisbane’s visitor economy.”

Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said he was thrilled Brisbane will host the entire round and serve up eight blockbuster matches for eager footy fans.

“We know there’s pent-up demand for live action sports and we’re expecting the three-day NRL Magic Round to attract crowds from around Australia, filling stadium seats, booking out hotels and dining at our restaurants and cafes, which will be a fantastic financial boost to our hospitality, retail and tourism operators,” Cr Schrinner said.

“When they’re not enjoying the action and atmosphere at Suncorp Stadium, I encourage everyone to take advantage of Brisbane’s thriving dining and bar scene, tourism attractions, warm winter weather and relaxed outdoor lifestyle.”

Magic Round Brisbane, delivered by KFC, returns to Suncorp Stadium between 14-16 May (Round Ten). Single day tickets will be on sale in March.

Fans will now be able to purchase a three-day supporter pass which includes one day within their team’s supporter bay and an additional two days in reserved seating.

Glad to see the Bulldogs and Cowboys get up for a win. It really gets interesting with some upsets. Shame we couldn't join them. The march of the lower ladder teams puts some more pressure on us.

Referee Henry Perenara retires due to heart condition
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/

A heart condition has prompted Auckland-born NRL referee Henry Perenara to retire at the age of 40.

Perenara, who played one test for the Kiwis in 2001, has been an NRL referee since 2011, after playing 72 first grade matches in the NRL for five clubs.

He is a cousin of All Blacks TJ Perenara and Sonny Bill Williams.

Perenara has been diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, an abnormally fast heartbeat that causes shortness of breath, dizziness sweating or fainting, The Daily Telegraph reported.

He almost collapsed at training a week ago, Perenara told the newspaper. At times his heart raced to about 230 beats per minute.

A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute, but a fit athlete might be closer to 40 beats per minute.

"I nearly blacked out," he said. "I don't remember much of it, but that's when I had to make the decision to give it away. You certainly don't want to risk it happening in a game."

He said he had battled the disease for almost 15 years. At times it struck during games.

"I just kept pushing through it. It's not life-threatening, but it's not good either. It feels like your heart is beating out of your chest. It's happened in games, but I've just tried to mask it."

A cardiologist diagnosed him in February and put him on medication, which made him lethargic. He quit after two months.

In 2020, Perenara was the first NRL referee to send off a player for an alleged bite, when he red-carded Kevin Proctor when the Cronulla Sharks played against the Gold Coast Titans.

He made his international refereeing debut in 2011 when New Zealand played the Cook Islands in a one-off test match in Rarotonga.

He had made his NRL first grade debut as a referee in the Roosters-Raiders match earlier that year.

He will still work in the bunker and help coach junior refs.
