Two things. Firstly, I found our CEO, secondly, it's nothing I haven't said previously, but when the CEO says it sounds way worse. Putting a team together for 2023-24. Ouch

Gold Coast Titans chief executive Steve Mitchell discusses their impending NRL coach appointment

TITANS chief executive Steve Mitchell stopped short of confirming Justin Holbrook’s appointment but declared the club will work with their new coach to build a playing roster with the 2023-24 seasons in mind.

Mitchell said an announcement would not come on Tuesday as had been predicted but possibly by the end of the week.

When asked directly whether Holbrook and the club have agreed to terms, Mitchell responded: “The process isn’t finished so we have still got to get to the pointy end of that before we can actually comment on it because of the confidentiality of the whole process and everyone involved.

“Holbrook brings a lot out of what he has done and where he has come from and what he has done with St Helens but so do all of the other parties.

“We have had some wonderful candidates come through.”

Holbrook, a 43-year-old former NRL player, has made a name for himself coaching St Helens to a supreme run of success since the start of 2017 and Mitchell admitted that winning culture was an attraction.

“Definitely but a number of the candidates bring that sort of culture with them as well that have come out of systems that have won premierships at NRL level,” he said.

“A winning culture is fundamental to what we want and we need that culture through the high performance system to complement everything else we are doing in the community and that’s a big part of the criteria.”

The Titans appear unwilling to part pay players to join rival clubs, meaning there is little wiggle room for their new coach to ring the changes for 2020.

Rather, that squad remoulding process will come with a long-term view – and the coach will be given time to see out that vision, unlike Garth Brennan was.

“I think you would have an expectation that the coach will have input into reshaping of a roster but that happens over a period of years,” Mitchell said.

“Strategically we probably have to look forward to ’23 and ’24 as to what the roster looks like then, who is coming through locally, where we sit with regard to the composition of the squad across the paddock.

“The coach would have some input into that but he would have a part of that, not drive the whole lot.

“…There’s a genuine understanding, desire and intent from the club to have a long-term coach, a coach who can set culture and build a squad over a three to five-year period.”

Mitchell added the club believes they have a desirable project for a coach to take on, with an abundance of rising talent and the prospect of being their maiden premiership mentor, and hailed leadership and culture as the two key qualities they were pursuing.

“We need someone who can grab our player cohort over a long period of time, get the very best out of them and take the Gold Coast onto the national platform,” he said.

He’s not wrong in the projection of 23 by then all the over paid players will be finally gone since they aren’t willing to subsidise there pay to other clubs

I would've thought 2022 would be the target. Boyd and Wallace are the only players currently contracted beyond 2021 and Wallace is providing good value for money.

I like that the club has made the stand and are saying that they won’t subside contracts for players. It sends a clear message that if a player wants to go then that’s ok but the club won’t be paying you to go. Kinda like “ Fit in or F.....Off.

Yep, I like it too. It also gives us leverage over underperforming players who know they will be punted to reserve grade rather than subsidised at another club with the overall same salary. Not having the expectation of immediate success is a (small) blessing in disguise in that regard.

Kinda like the Titans saying “ Well your doing damage to our name / brand by not playing well , then how much damage will it do to your brand / image if we play you in Reserve grade then ? “ ...... Other clubs won’t pay top dollar for reserve graders.

Yep, either pick up your game or take a pay cut and piss off somewhere else. Hardball them and tolerate no rubbish even if it costs us in the short term.

I wonder how many players managers have approached the Titans to get a release to go to Club X if we pay some money. Hope this doesn't upset the Peachey deal we hammered out at the start of the month (allegedly).

Okay does no one else find it concerning that he's basically saying that we will not be competitive until 2023 because we are stuck with all of the same crappy players? Sure I would hate to pay players to play for other clubs but we have to cut a heap of players for next year and 2021. Seriously if we don't cut any dead weight over the off season next year will be an absolute shambles just like this one and the club will fold within a couple of years if we keep finishing in the bottom 4.

Matty Johns said it best on his podcast. He hates when teams say "we are in rebuilding mode" because it's basically telling all other 15 teams that you are no chance at competing for the next few years.

Goodbye Titans if we can't at least challenge for the top 8 next year.

Newcastle have spent the last few years at the bottom
Canterbury expect a number of lean years too to reshape the list

Nobody during those times And especially the fans of those clubs make comments about folding

There needs to be a severe injection of resilience into the fan base

It’s a regular pattern. Hit a road bump and out comes the quitting talk.

Mate you cannot be serious. Newcastle is a rugby league stronghold and they live and breath their footy, Canterbury as well are a strong club that has been around for decades and both of these clubs have had success and titles. Same goes with Parra.

I want it to be all roses and sunshine as well but fact is that we are going to drop to almost 5000-6000 members next season and we have been in the bottom 3 for 6 out of our last 10 years. Fans will only accept mediocrity for so long before (as we are already seeing) they give up and move their support. And it won't be long at all, maybe 2-3 years at most. If we can be even mid table next year and then in the 8 the year after and keep that trend going, we will be right. But until we improve we are in danger
