THE NRMA Insurance Broncos are preparing for a dog fight with one of the most gritty teams in the competition.
That's the opinion of NRMA Insurance Broncos' co-captain Corey Parker as he prepares for Friday's local derby against the Gold Coast Titans.
And it is the Broncos who could take a few key learnings from their rivals down the coastline.
While the Titans were well beaten by the Rabbitohs last week, they have shown some front to win some tight matches this year, including the late 12-8 victory over Brisbane four weeks ago.
The Broncos must overcome that trait the Gold Coast has shown.
"It should be a big occasion on our home patch," said Parker of the Suncorp Stadium match.
"That's how they have been playing.
"They have been in the games they have been in apart from one or two big scores.
"They have been winning very gritty.
"We were in control for the majority of the last game but they came away with the points."
Parker said the team was working on starting better after having to chase successive 14-0 in their last two matches.
"In the past two games sides have jumped us," he said.
"Souths jumped us and the Cowboys jumped us, and both times it was 14 points.
"To our credit, we have done extremely well to get back into both games.
"We had opportunities to close it out and didn't do so.
"You get the rewards you deserve.
"Last Friday night we didn't deserve to win that game."
The Broncos will check Sam Thaiday tomorrow morning to see if his calf injury has improved enough to play his first match in a month.
Parker said it was hard to know which way it would go.
Thaiday was not named to play yesterday.
"I'm not too sure," said Parker when asked his medical opinion.
"Calves are touchy sort of injuries so it is more how they pull up.
"If he is right to play he will be there."

In that banner they made Parker look somewhat cool and Myles look normal … photoshop is a wonderful thing
Four reasons to escape to Queensland: Sun, Surf, Sand & the Titans.
Women in league round Brad, and this is not respectful to anyone.

Be strong mate, I actually like everything about this game. Broncos could not score against the Cows with no Thruston for 15 minutes, and we will be sharpening up our defence after the woeful display against the Rabbits. Hodges has been ****e, Barba quiet and Thaiday might not even play, and if he does he will have the current fitness of Zillman. We have Carter and White off the bench and Douglas starting.
I don't really want to say it, but I think it will all come down to Mini's hands! Rocks and diamonds Minichello might well be the game breaker for us. And Dave Taylor of course. If these 2 fire up, we will win this nicely.

Flying up for the game, How bad is the weather up north atm? Is it def raincoat material?
Cheers for the heads up. I'm more going to see Lang Park, with an unexpected win an added bonus if it happens.
In 91 I caught a chartered bus up from N'castle to watch the Coast knock off the Knights @Seagulls Stadium. A big mission before the era of affordable flying!
