Default Cowboys Sign Nt Junior Talent

    COWBOYS SIGN NT JUNIOR TALENT
    Cowboys Media Release

Three promising Northern Territory rugby league juniors have been signed by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys on junior contracts for the next two years.

David Munro (aged 14, Darwin Middle School), Christopher Smith (aged 15, Casuarina High School) and Mawedo Waianga (aged 15, Darwin High School) impressed with solid performances at the National Under 15s Schoolboys Championships in Adelaide in late June and are now part of the club?s junior talent roster.

These contracts represent the opportunity for the young players to be involved in the National Rugby League program and potentially progress through the competition ranks to the National Youth Competition and ultimately the NRL.

Recruitment Manager Clint Zammit is responsible for unearthing young talent for the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and is pleased to have secured these players ahead of some of the rival clubs.

?These young players show tremendous natural talent and while they haven?t been exposed to a lot of structured coaching, we?re confident that they?ll progress and develop as players while in our system,? Zammit says.

?David is a tall, rangy, athletic back rower who is a dynamic runner of the footy, with an uncanny ability to break the line and defends aggressively with great enthusiasm.

?Christopher is one of the toughest kids I have seen in a while with a tremendous work ethic, while Mawedo is a tremendous athlete who reminds me of Matty Bowen, the way he carries the footy and his ability to get between players.?

?We?ll monitor their progress over the next two years, watching them play for NT in the state cup and giving them feedback on their performances.

?We also monitor behaviour on and off the field, making sure they?re doing the right things at school and so forth, which is just as important as their on field performances.

?We?ll bring them to camps in Townsville where we?ll develop their skills and game sense as well as testing in areas of strength and fitness, which gives us a chance to have a look at them in an environment with our other junior contract players, to see where they?re at and how they compare within our system.?

These signings follow the announcement in late July by the NT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Karl Hampton, of a three-year deal with the Cowboys involving games and community engagement in the Northern Territory.

    The players join Quinton Pomare-Anderson (Alice Springs) on the Cowboys books;

Pomare-Anderson signed with the club in December 2008 on a three-year deal.

The Cowboys have signed up to play pre-season games in the Northern Territory for the next few years.

I think it's a great area to foster the development of Rugby league. There are a huge number of incredibly talented Aboriginal sportsmen there.

Yep the NT Titans who actually pre-date the Gold Coast Titans. They play in SG Ball, Under 18s and Harold Matthews Under 16s.

Our club has a close relationship with NT and we recognise them as a viable part of the future of rugby league. Even currently rugby league is very very healthy up the top end.

Not sure, the Cowboys have 12 years on us! but I can tell you that the Cowboys think outside the box. They are heavily into PNG, even signing a PNG Rice company as a sponsor!

Very smart to cast your net wide, especially in PNG and NT.
