Paul Wellens kept up his rich scoring form as St Helens eased past Wakefield to return to the top of the table.

Willie Talau's blunder gifted Sean Gleeson an early try for the Wildcats but Paul Sculthorpe and Ade Gardner set up Matt Gidley to cancel it out.

Leon Pryce and Gardner scored to add to thew home side's lead before half time, as the conditions deteriorated.

Gidley added another before a Wellens brace sewed things up. Wakefield's Oliver Elima finishing off the scoring.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    St Helens coach Daniel Anderson
"Paul Wellens was an injury doubt all week after hurting his back - would you believe it - playing darts.

"It was a loose and scrappy game at times and a mixed bag from everyone on the field.

"Our kicking game was exceptionally poor and we made it hard for ourselves. They tested us but we defended well, although we were a little sloppy with the ball."

    Wakefield coach John Kear

"We had a dig and I cannot fault the effort.

"We are finished with St Helens for the rest of the season and I am delighted about that.

"I thought a 34-24 scoreline would have been a better reflection of the game but the most worrying aspect is more injuries."
