    IPSWICH v EASTS
North Ipswich Reserve, Sunday March 25, 3.00pm
    Referee: Justin Davis

THE STORY: Although at opposite ends of the table after Round One, the Tigers and Jets will provide a willing contest, with several ex-Easts identities now at The Terrace. Ipswich assistant coach Darren Smith, plus players Jason Bulgarelli, Trevor Exton, Scott Alo and Alex Fata all arrived at North Ipswich Reserve from Langlands Park.

THE STAT: Ipswich has only finished above Easts once in the 11 years of the Wizard Cup so far. That was in 2003, the year after the Jest played Redcliffe in the grand final. Even in the season that Ipswich made the decider, Easts finished second and the Jets finished third.

THE STAR: Sliding in at number 15 for Ipswich is Michael Ryan, the former Brisbane Broncos hooker. A local junior, Ryan had planned on simply going around with his old Brothers club in the IRL this year until coaxed back to State League. Jets coach Kevin Walters had Ryan in his team when he took Toowoomba to the 2001 title.

CHANGES: IPSWICH ? In: Ricky Bird, Jason Bulgarelli, Michael Ryan, Scott Alo. Out: Geoff Holcombe, Paul Jackwitz, Smith Samau, Jarrod Biggs. EASTS ? In: Anthony Boyd. Out: Marcus Jensen.

    CHARGES: None.

    Miserable effort

    26.03.2007

WANTED: Someone who can catch and pass a football.
If you know anyone who meets the criteria, give Ipswich Jets coach Kevin Walters a call.

But don?t expect Kevvie to be in the best of moods if you?re game enough to give him a ring.

That?s because the new Jets coach had to sit through a painful 80 minute period in yesterday?s Queensland Cup match against the Easts Tigers at QLD Group Stadium.

Much to his frustration, the Jets continually turned over possession in a shocking performance that failed to win over the hardy souls who braved the miserable weather and the even more miserable football.
The Tigers, who were well below their best as well, won the scrappy contest 20-6. Chasing their first win under the new regime of Walters, Darren Smith and Glenn Lazarus, the Jets looked capable of an upset win after Smith Samua?s fancy footwork led to a try and a 6-6 scoreline late in the first half.

But the Jets never came close to scoring a second try until another botched attempt in the 74th minute.

Persistent showers created slippery conditions for the players.
However, the Jets cannot use that as an excuse for their shoddy handling display.

Walters somehow managed to keep his emotions in check as his charges continually spilt the ball in the second half.

?Just poor discipline,? Walters said from inside a quiet dressing room.

?The conditions were less than ideal but they had to play in them as well . . . just poor discipline.?

Walters refused to direct any criticism at referee Justin Davis, who repeatedly penalised the Jets in the second half.

?It was OK,? he said of the officiating.

?We can?t be negative towards him. He was only doing his job.?

The only positive to come from the forgettable outing was Ipswich?s commitment in defence.

Easts? first three tries came from kicks.

Their fourth try came from a David Tyrell intercept in the final 30 seconds.
?We were better defensively today,? said Walters, whose side leaked 38 points in last weekend?s opener against Burleigh.

?It?s going to be a long haul for us. We made some progress with our defence today but our attack was still ... you can?t do anything when you?re not holding the ball.?

Nearly every player was guilty of dropping the ball at crucial times yesterday.

Walters said every player had to be accountable.

?That just comes down to individuals,? he said when asked how the Jets would cut their mistake rate.

?They?ve got to make sure they pass it (properly), they?ve got to make sure they catch it and if they get tackled they?ve got to make sure they get up and play it."

Walters was pleased to see Ricky Bird and Jason Bulgarelli emerged unscathed yesterday.

Bulgarelli had a few nice touches, but he too was guilty of giving away possession and needles penalties.

The struggling Jets play Queensland Cup leader Norths Devils on Sunday at Bishop Park.
