Politis fears soccer

THE NRL's most influential board member, Roosters boss Nick Politis (pictured), says soccer - and not the AFL - is the biggest danger to rugby league over the next decade.
"With the success of the A-League and the crowds they are attracting, soccer could be the No1 code in the country in 10 years time,'' Politis told us.
"Look at their crowds during the semis ... it's embarrassing. They've been bigger than some of the crowds the NRL got for the finals last year. Soccer is a real threat and it's only going to get stronger with the move into Asia.''
This is the same bloke who sits on the NRL's partnership committee and is chairman of the Sydney Roosters. We reckon he might have kept his thoughts to himself, rather than cannibalising the game that is his lifeblood.

The Roar average half the crowd the Broncos do.
I doubt people are going to switch from one to the other anyhow. Some people like soccer, some like league, some like AFL, some like union. And some people, and this is crazy I know, like them all.

The only way soccer can be a real threat is if fans choose to attend a soccer match instead of a League match that is being played around the same time, and this won't happen because soccer is played in League's off season.

I say I am laughing because the only reason he fears soccer/football is because he knows that any success they have is money down the drain for him. He and his consortium of the Sydney Blues once upon a time tried to get the A-League birth, only to be knocked back by Sydney FC.
Oh well Nick, that happens, but don't tell me it's haunting you that much... maybe the Roosters can help you to ease the pain... actually on second thoughts, that might haunt you more... :lol!:
