Default Cheerio cheerleaders as Rabbitohs dump bunny girls

Cheerio cheerleaders as Rabbitohs dump bunny girls

    SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

    February 3, 2007

TWO years after rugby league's image with women hit an all-time low, the code's most traditional club will be the first to do away with scantily-clad cheergirls at football games this season, while another will include cheerboys for the first time.

South Sydney fans will be entertained by beats and drums instead of pleats and pompoms at home games this year as the foundation club replaces the traditional primped and perky all-female cheers quad with Australian dance legend Dein Perry, producer of Tap Dogs, Australian highest grossing theatre export, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Perry will hold open auditions for a Rabbitohs Drum Squad this month in an attempt to make home games more family-friendly and "show people that the mould of traditional entertainment at the footy can be broken".

A Newcastle boy who made tap dancing manly again, Perry's connection with the Rabbitohs co-owner and executive chairman, Peter Holmes a Court, began five years ago with Tap Dogs' first international foray to the Edinburgh Festival.

"The tribalism of rugby league and the visceral nature of the game" made drumming a perfect fit for match days, Mr Holmes a Court said.

"Nobody in Australia does rhythm like Dein and we're blessed to find a dance choreographer who is a league nut."

The club's cheerleaders would still be involved in its corporate hospitality program and the mixed-sex drummers would have a broader appeal of their own, he said.

"I don't think anyone comes to a game just to look at a little bit of cleavage. No one will miss what we had ? because there will be so much more. I think rugby league can appeal to people who aren't traditional supporters. ? With us and other teams changing their game-day experience, it will broaden the audience."

At the Parramatta Eels, cheerleaders will be joined by three blokes this season in another rugby league first - and their pouty, dance-based routines replaced by athletic tossing, tumbling and tricks.

It is another example of rugby league's determination to reach beyond its core audience of young men who drink beer and yell, "Get 'em onside!" Said Eels cheerleading coach Melissa McKenzie: "This team appeals to mothers and daughters and kids, too."

The NSW Minister for Sports, Sandra Nori, said it was smart marketing by both clubs and it would be good for rugby league.

The academic Catharine Lumby, who was hired as a consultant by the NRL in 2004 after damaging allegations of sexual misconduct against the Bulldogs clubs, said cheerleaders were not to blame for the game's blokey image and player behaviour issues. "But there is an issue of taste there. Some people would prefer to see women in short skirts at the ballet, but there you go."

Only one AFL team - the Adelaide Crows - still has cheerleaders. Others such as the Carlton Bluebirds and the Sydney Swanettes are distant memories.

I don't think anyone minds looking at it either, especially when the Rabbitohs are playing........

I'm not sure the eels are first with male cheerleaders, pretty sure I saw some at Broncos games.

Cheerleaders are nice to look at and all (sometimes!), but they're more annoying when you're right up the front and they get in the way.

My biggest issue with them is they do their little dance routine when something happens, and that's about it. They're not leading any cheers.
I remember seeing some cheer the opposition try, some of the girls who get these gigs have no clue about the game.

It'd be good if they did more, actually get the crowd worked up (well, in a different way to how they do now!), get them cheering and chanting.

I can't believe they got rid of their cheerleaders....

And I think the Dragons were the first to have a male cheerleader and I know the Broncos used to have some...they lasted about 2 seconds. They were called the Honeys and the Hunks.

Poor journalism, but I expect nothing more from Jacqueline Maley, continuing her agenda against rugby league.

I love the last bit, trying to big up AFL. Yes *clap* *clap* for the AFL, a bastion of goodness and riteousness in Australian sport. Your free Swans season tickets are in the mail.

I'm glad rugby league has cheerleaders. I think the issue isn't getting rid of them but innovating them to be more professional and relevant, heading towards more American style cheerleading.

I believe the Bunnies decision is a wrong turn and it won't be welcome by their fans.

    Cheerleaders are great
    Having no Cheerleaders is dumb

Default 'Cheerleaders Made Males Uncomfortable' - Russell Crowe

    Cheerleaders made males 'uncomfortable'
    Feb 09, 2007
    Source:AAP

CHEERLEADERS have been scrapped by the South Sydney Rabbitohs because it made their fans, including male supporters, uncomfortable, club co-owner and actor Russell Crowe says.

The NRL team made the decision to scrap the pom-poms this season and replace them with a drumming band for their home matches.

Crowe has told News Ltd newspapers the decision was about trying to make the games a positive experience for the crowd.

?It (cheerleaders) makes women uncomfortable and it makes blokes who take their son to the football also uncomfortable,? he told News Ltd.

?But we are thankful for the time and effort the girls put in and some of them probably will be disappointed.?

Crowe said he had a positive reaction from fans, particularly women and his own wife Danielle Spencer when they heard the news.

How does it make men who take their sons uncomfortable?

Odd! Unless their jeans are too tight or something!

    Default Who's Gay Now?

Who the bloody hell does Russell Crowe think he is. Footy and cheerleaders go hand in hand. Be stuffed if I am going to take my boy to the footy to see bunch of tune playing twits. Political correctness gone mad. Thanks Russell. I hope the Rabbitohs have another great season. Not. Might have to change their name to Gaydiators instead. At least you will get some following from a majoritory of Sydney. :topic:
