Sunday 20th August at Brookvale Oval, 3.00pm

    Team Notes:

    Sea Eagles

Halfback Matt Orford has been named captain for Sunday's Brookvale Oval clash against South Sydney, in lieu of Ben Kennedy (quadriceps).

Manly belts Souths 38-16, holds 3rd spot
    Sunday, August 20, 2006 - 4:59 PM

Manly maintained its grip on outright third position on the NRL ladder with a 38-16 win over South Sydney at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

Led by stand in captain Matt Orford, the Sea Eagles overcame a 12-10 halftime deficit to run out seven tries to three winners in front of a crowd of 19,253.

Fullback Brett Stewart extended his try-scoring feast at home, bagging a hat trick to take his record to 30 four-pointers from his last 28 games at Brookvale.

Centre Steve Matai grabbed two tries of his own, both coming from Orford kicks in the space of four minutes midway through the second half to seal the victory for the home side.

Orford, standing in for injured skipper Ben Kennedy, was in everything and should have scored a try himself except for an unselfish pass to reserve hooker Shayne Dunley in the 33rd minute gifted his teammate his first try of the season.

Orford had side stepped his way through the Rabbitohs defence and past fullback Todd Polglase without getting touched but then, with just a few metres to the white line, he gave the ball to Dunley for the easiest of four-pointers.

Stewart could have finished with four tries but he fumbled a tricky bouncing ball from an Orford kick after another line break in the eighth minute as Polglase applied a timely tackle.

The Eagles fullback was everywhere, feeding off Orford's sublime positional play but his final try was all his own work.

Stewart collected a Joe Williams grubber kick and then ran 65 metres untouched to the tryline.

It capped a tremendous second half revival by the Eagles, while the Rabbitohs will be disappointed to have let such a positive start crumble into a heavy loss.

Paul Mellor (15th minute) and Joe Galuvao (54th minute) both barged over for tries while winger Nathan Merritt (19th minute) scored his 21st try of the season to keep his lead at the top of the try scorers' list.
