    Default Melbourne Storm awards

STORM hooker Cameron Smith capped an outstanding season when he was named the club's player of the year last night.

Smith, 22, played 23 games for Storm and also starred for Queensland in this year's State-of-Origin series.

Smith, who topped the NRL's tackle count, was considered unlucky not to be picked in the Australian side for this month's Tri Nations Test series against New Zealand and Great Britain.

Runaway winner Smith received his award, which is voted by teammates and coach Craig Bellamy, in front of a big crowd at the Grand Hyatt on Collins St.

It was the first time Storm's former rookie of the year had won the club's major prize.

Centre Matt King was named the best back, while lock Dallas Johnson was recognised as the best forward.

King also picked up the Greg Brentnall Trophy, which is voted by the club's coterie group, and the award for best try, which is selected by fans.

The impressive speedster will join the Australian team today in preparation for next Saturday's Tri Nations Test opener against New Zealand in Sydney.

Johnson shared the most popular player award with veteran winger Matt Geyer.

Prop Brett White was named the club's rookie of the year, edging out fullback Greg Inglis for the award.

Another youngster, winger Jake Webster was named Storm's most improved player.

In the final presentation of the night, foundation Storm players Robbie Kearns and Geyer were made life members.

Cam Smith should do well as captain, unless the extra pressure hampers his game.

He was always going to be groomed as a future captain, he was named one of the two vice captains in the Qld origin side and this only his third series as a 21/22 year old.
I am sure he will be able to handle the pressure of leading an NRL team and will probably do a better job than some current captains. He is a very level headed guy who is able to communicate well and has the respect of his team mates. He is also great with the fans and the media.

Smith was in the QLD SOO side in his second year of 1st grade....he has since played in the SOO every year after that...i dont think pressure of the captaincy will hamper him at all.
