CRAIG Gower's injury woes continued last night when the halfback succumbed to a hamstring injury in Penrith's 24-12 win against Canberra.
Gower, backing up after NSW's Origin loss on Wednesday night, damaged his hamstring late in the first half and faces a stint on the sidelines, tempering the Panthers' celebrations of a win which has left them just outside the top eight.
Gower, the Panthers' captain after Tony Puletua's late withdrawal, did not return after the injury, leaving the 9111 crowd slightly subdued.
In a game which was probably decided more by who wasn't on the field than who was (although Preston Campbell's wonderful 59th-minute try was an exception), the Raiders had to battle without two players on the bench for most of the game.
Penrith led 10-0 at half-time, but despite the Raiders' injury woes, the ACT side were the first to score in the second half after Phil Graham latched onto a Todd Carney ball.
But Penrith regained their advantage through Campbell.
The Gold Coast-bound pivot bravely touched down after winger Michael Gordon found space down the right flank and chipped through.
Campbell won the race for the ball, colliding with Raider David Howell a split second after he scored.
Gordon then clinched the win with his second try of the night with five minutes remaining - his conversion giving him a 14-point haul.
The match began disastrously for Canberra, who lost two players in the first eight minutes.
First, hooker Lincoln Withers was helped off the field after being heavily concussed after just three minutes, then five minutes later winger Craig Frawley appeared to damage his hamstring chasing a Gower kick.
The Raiders defended stoically, but the pressure finally told after 22 minutes when Penrith's two State of Origin combatants, Gower and Rhys Wesser, combined. The halfback grubbered and the fullback flew through to score.
But then disaster struck for the Panthers, with Gower's injury evening things up.
The halfback took the ball from dummy half and was about to take on the Canberra line when he stopped as if he had been shot, clutching at his hamstring.
