Default Storm interested in Team Melbourne concept

    Storm to continue the push

MELBOURNE Storm is looking into the concept of a "super club" with AFL's Melbourne Demons and several other city teams, but have assured fans they will never change their colours or name.

Storm boss Brian Waldron said last night his NRL club was investigating the benefits of linking up with the Demons (AFL), the Melbourne Victory (A-League), the Tigers (NBL) and the Phoenix (netball) in a Team Melbourne initiative.

The Phoenix netball side yesterday agreed to change their colours into the navy and red of the Demons, but Waldron stressed the Storm would never follow suit.

"Not in a billion years," he said. "There would be no change of colours or name."

Waldron said he was looking into Team Melbourne idea for potential in sharing back office resources and synergies in areas such as sponsorships, merchandise, marketing and memberships.

The Phoenix may develop training facilities attached to the purpose-built football ground being built for the Storm and the Victory at Olympic Park.

Meanwhile, in a show the NRL is slowly making inroads in AFL territory, Channel Nine will show the third State of Origin live in Victoria for the first time.

The Telstra Dome decider is sold out.

"People are no longer rusted on to one sport. They will take an interest in other games," Nine chief executive Eddie McGuire told The Saturday Daily Telegraph.

"Melbourne Storm games are not massive raters in Melbourne. But we have no qualms whatsoever in putting State of Origin III live on Channel Nine in Melbourne.

"It's a massive event in that town on that particular night. It's sold out at Telsta Dome"

Thank god Waldron is committed to protecting the Storms fantastic identity.

But fancy McGuire saying the Storm don't rate. They are never given a chance and the Lions and Swans ratings in previous years haven't been flash hot. If he doesn't toe the line next year he will find himself in the gun sights of many a rugby league fan.

Team Melbourne aye??? The "paupers" in this idea are the Storm and the Phoenix. Not many ppl turn up to these respective games for whatever reason. Maybe this will kick start a bigger awareness of these teams and hopefully increase crowd numbers if these teams are successful. Super timing seeing as the storm are leading the comp.

It was just a publicity stunt to make the papers and make people aware of who the Melbourne Storm are

The Tigers aren't exactly setting the world on fire and there would be a lot more money moving around with the Storm then the Tigers. If there is resource sharing and cost savings to be had then great. The difference between Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Lions is the network - Lions games are almost exclusively on Saturday nights which are on 10. Channel 9 will start to market the Storm and Rugby League next year when they don't have the AFL. Look to a lot more of their games being shown at better times. Channel Nine will be looking to find slots that won't compete directly with AFL (ie start before AFL games) so that they have some chance of picking up ratings (maybe even live on a Friday night! or the 5:30 game on Saturdays) They will be looking to make some serious in roads though.

Geese are the ultimate team players.
They honk to encourage one another!

Waldron needs a massive pat on the back for his efforts to grow the Storm Brand. This can only help!

I don't think anyone but Waldron would be able to penetrate the Melbourne market as well as he can. Knowledge of how the mexicans think can only be of benefit to RL.

Is this like Harlequins in England did? Sounds like a good concept, strength in numbers, the old adage, especially financially.
