Default Wesser says he deserves Origin chance

    SMH

the more wesser open his mouth the more i dislike and lose respect for him. if he is the best player available then yes he does but ATM both Slater and Shif would be ahead of him. his season hasn't exactly set the world on fire.

Penrith fullback Rhys Wesser believes he deserves another chance to play State of Origin football for Queensland, particularly if he produces a big game against Wests Tigers and NSW No.1 Brett Hodgson. Wesser, who played three Origin games for the Maroons in 2004, is back in the selection frame after injuries to Queensland's 2006 fullbacks Karmichael Hunt and Matt Bowen, and young gun Greg Inglis.

"It's a good chance for me in the next game, there's a few injuries and so there is a spot there," Wesser said ahead of the game at CUA Stadium.

"If I get out there on Saturday night and play a strong game from the back I think I maybe deserve a chance of having a crack down in Melbourne."

But Wesser said he's also used to missing out, something that has upset him.

"It's been an ongoing thing, the fact that I keep just missing out so I'm kind of used to it actually," he said.

"It is disappointing, it does get to you but you get over it."

A vital weapon for the Panthers in their NRL premiership win in 2003, Wesser said he can't remember losing to the Tigers.

And with good reason - the Panthers haven't lost to the joint-venture club since 2002 and have a 4-1 win-loss record at home.

They have, however, lost their past three games and have claimed victory just twice in six games at CUA Stadium this year.

"We've just come off the bye and we've had a good rest so mentally and physically our bodies are pretty much ready," he said.

"Everyone's a bit starved of not winning many games and we're ready to get out there, enjoy a game of football and hopefully come home with the two points."

While the Tigers have started to tentatively build some of the momentum that famously got them the trophy last year, Penrith desperately needs to a win to stay in touch with the top eight.

Panthers halfback Craig Gower, who has played only one game since injuring his knee in a NSW Origin training mishap in May, has a final chance to press for an Origin III start against the quality halves pairing of Scott Prince and Benji Marshall.

Wesser had that 1 fluke year a few years back...since then he has been an average fullback. Hasnt been playing that well this year and as you said Teegy there are players ahead of him.

He's got a bit of confidence happening, that's not a bad thing for a bloke who has to diffuse bombs. Wesser is probably ahead of Billy ATM but Billy just has to have some reasonable minutes to be put on standby for Inglis. I reckon if anyone of the fullbacks puts together a magical performance this weekend they could get a start. That's how close it is. I reckon the Qld selectors will name Inglis and wait for the medical on Wednesday to rule him out

He's a turnstyle, who is suspect under the high ball and isn't in very good form..

Then you have Schifcofske, who is an inspirational leader, safe as a house and has the ability to lift the side when needed...

    Hmm tough choice....

Oh for goodness sake, just shut up.
Hes not that good Wesser, never really rated him to be honest.
Shif deserves it more, and would be the better option, if Inglis is injured.

Agree with the sook bit. Just get on with it and prove them wrong. That's what the selectors respond to. Shame one of the fastest blokes to grace a league field hasn't been able to stop his ego getting in his way of performances

Current thoughts on selection are that Inglis will be name with Schifcoske on the wing or 18th man (Big Mal sounded out Mat Elliot about things apparently) with Slater to get a gig if he performs well with him or Bowen possibly getting a bench spot with Berrigan going to the centres. Need Tate on the wing IMO he's the best option there.

Rhys Wesser a sook for coming out saying he deserved a shot at the vacant Origin spot? Not my definition, but each to their own. Wesser has an ego? Where is all this coming from??? Enlighten me. I am not sure how many have met the guy though I have and ego is not a word used to describe the guy.

Rhys Wesser can push his own barrow as can Schifcofske, Slater and the like, the fact remains only the decision made by the selectors will have any bearing on what eventuates.

Clinton Schifcofske will play Origin 3, Inglis is said to be very unlikely to be fit and I would not play him for the simple fact his last game IF he played would of been Origin one. I think he is good, though he is not that good to see a pardon and not play no football for 4-6 weeks and slot straight back in to our Origin side.

Tell me Teegy out of interest, what else has Wesser said that would make you lose "respect" for him? Wesser is a clean skin and never in the papers for the wrong reason, I would love to know what things he says that get under your skin so bad.

the thing that really got me was his demending a reason for the selectors not picking him, no player is that certain of a spot in the team that they should be demading reasons for them not being selected. and over the years i have seen a few articles that display him in a negative light IMO

"It's a good chance for me in the next game, there's a few injuries and so there is a spot there," Wesser said ahead of the game at CUA Stadium.

"If I get out there on Saturday night and play a strong game from the back I think I maybe deserve a chance of having a crack down in Melbourne."
He is not demanding nothing - he is stating if he comes out and plays a good game he "maybe deserves a chance of having a crack down in Melbourne". Rhys Wesser was called in and put on standby for Justin Hodges before game two, he is as good a chance of getting a call up for game three as Schifcofske, Slater or Bowen.

Is there are other articles out there today that show him demanding he be selected? Love to see em'.

I would love to also see these "other articles" from times gone by too. Wesser is one of the more humble men in our game if anything.

Im not taking sides here but i agree with Deegan. I thin your being a bit harsh on Wesser Teegy. Wesser said IF he plays a good game tomorrow night then he thinks he will deserve a shot at the #1 QLD jersey.

"If I get out there on Saturday night and play a strong game from the back I think I maybe deserve a chance of having a crack down in Melbourne."
I dont think thats "demanding" at all. He thinks that if by having a blinder this week that his chances will increase....fair enough, i dont think he should get the spot but i dont think he was being demanding or up himself.

I didnt lose respect for him, I just think he should shut up and let the selectors do their job. Its all fair to say he deserves it, but he acts as if he deserves it more then the others.

As teegy said, the way he demanded an explanation was stupid, I believe it was another article though where he stated this. Actually I think it was more his management or something.

Anyways, I just dont think his performances is enough to warrant him pushing so much for it. Sure its great to say if I have a great performance etc, but why not just do it, and then make a case!?
