QUEENSLAND construction company Watpac has been awarded the contract to build the new Gold Coast football stadium at Robina.
The project, which will have an end value of about $200 million, will cost around $160 million to build, according to a spokesman for Premier Peter Beattie.
Mr Beattie met Watpac representatives on Friday to turn the first sod on the site.
Watpac will be managing contractor responsible for design, construct and commissioning of the project.
Work is expected to start later this year with completion set for the start of the 2008 NRL season.
Watpac managing director Greg Kempton said on Friday he was delighted to be involved in the project.
Once complete the stadium will seat 25,000. It will have 100 open corporate boxes, 25 closed corporate suites, a function hall, 16 food and beverage outlets.
There will be parking for 300 cars on site.
Mr Kempton said the group had received preferred developer status on the project some months ago before being officially awarded the contract on Friday.
The group which was responsible for Suncorp Stadium and all six stages of the Gabba, will bring the team behind the Gabba redevelopment to the project.
"We have been involved in stadiums for 20 years," he said. "We started out at Boondall with the Entertainment Centre."
Mr Kempton said the end value of the development would probably be about $200 million.
