Knights went down narrowly to the Raiders in the dying moments. So they'll be on alert. Take a moment to absorb the mayhem.

    Kalyn Ponga OUT

Knights v Titans: Ponga ruled out; Fifita in the frame
    https://www.nrl.com/news/2022/06/27/...-in-the-frame/

A season that started with such promise has turned into a nightmare for two clubs who played finals in 2021 and would have had designs on being part of the September action again this year.

The Knights launched their campaign with wins over the Roosters and Tigers before hitting the skids with seven straight losses while Gold Coast won two of their first four and pushed Parramatta and Canberra in the other two.

As they head into round 16, the Titans sit last, with a second wooden spoon in four years staring them in the face. The Knights are 12th, three wins outside the eight, but they can take comfort in the fact their run home includes games against the Bulldogs, Tigers and the Titans again in round 24.

To say this is a must-win match for both sides would be a massive understatement and with so much at stake this shapes as a gripping struggle in front of the loyal Newcastle faithful.

    The Rundown

    Team news

Knights: Star fullback Kalyn Ponga has been ruled out after suffering a category one concussion in Origin Two but Daniel Saifiti (knee) and Bradman Best (elbow) are a chance to return in a boost for Adam O'Brien. Dane Gagai has a five-day turnaround after the Origin game in Perth and will be monitored. Tex Hoy is the man most likely to step in for Ponga at fullback.

Titans: David Fifita hasn't played since round 12 so his return from a knee injury can't come soon enough for the Titans. Veteran forward Kevin Proctor (bicep) and winger Corey Thompson (knee) are also in the frame for a return. Captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui played 38 minutes in Origin Two and will be keen to back up for his club.

    Key match-up
David Klemmer v Isaac Liu: With 403 games of experience between them, Klemmer and Liu have huge roles to play in trying to turn around the fortunes of their clubs. Klemmer has been immense for the Knights, churning out 144 metres per game and slipping 22 offloads in his 10 matches. Two-time premiership winner Liu's value to the Titans goes far beyond his 99 run metres and 27 tackles per match, as he imparts the knowledge acquired over 217 games at the elite level. No quarter will be asked or given as two of the game's true warriors leave it all on the park in search of victory.

    Stat Attack
The Knights have won just one of six matches on their home patch this season, taking care of Wests Tigers 26-4 back in round two. Since then they have lost to Manly, Parramatta, Melbourne, Brisbane and Penrith at McDonald Jones Stadium, conceding 197 points and scoring just 28. Last year the Knights were 5-4 at home before the competition was transferred to Queensland due to COVID. The Titans are 1-8 away from Cbus Super Stadium in 2022.

Injury report: Rep Round break opens the door for big guns to return
    https://www.titans.com.au/news/2022/...uns-to-return/

Following the Representative Round bye, the Gold Coast Titans are hard at work, preparing for a big clash against the Newcastle Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium this Friday night.

The week off has allowed time for some niggling injuries to settle and star players to be given the green light for selection this weekend.

In big news for the club, Kevin Proctor, David Fifita and Corey Thompson are all back into full training and will be prepared to play should they be called up for selection the Round 16 bout.

Phil Sami also returned to training with the main squad this week, aiming to get back on the field after our next bye, against the Broncos in the Macca's Local Derby at Cbus Super Stadium.

Jayden Campbell is also going well and progressing through his return to run phase after being struck down by a hamstring injury in Round 13.

In further good news, Moeaki Fotuaika, Esan Marsters and Jacob Alick who all played for their nation at the weekend, got through without picking up anything and are right to go for the Coast.

The same goes for Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, who returned from Perth with a few bumps, but will train later in the week with full intent to lead his side out on Friday night.

Newcastle 'disappointed' by 'ridiculous' Bunker call that will sideline Kalyn Ponga
    https://wwos.nine.com.au/nrl/

Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga will miss this weekend's club match following a decision from the Bunker that former New South Wales captain Paul Gallen says is "ridiculous."

Ponga was forced from the field during Origin II after a hit from New South Wales star Nathan Cleary, with the Bunker determining it was a category one concussion.

That means a mandatory seven-day stand down, forcing him out of Newcastle's match against Gold Coast on Friday. Cleary wasn't charged by the match review committee.

"This is an interesting one with Kalyn Ponga, because he actually passed the HIA after the game, but he won't be able to play for Newcastle, and they're pretty disappointed with this," he explained.

"It was deemed a category one. He's been ruled out for the Knights because of a subjective decision from the Bunker.

"We saw in the Pacific Test a couple of players got a chance to get a HIA and come back on the field for things that were a lot worse, they were stumbling around.

"Kalyn Ponga is now not able to play for the Newcastle Knights."

Premiership-winning captain Paul Gallen said the Knights have every right to feel aggrieved.

"It's ridiculous that the Bunker can rule on a category one or category two having not even assessed the player," he said.

"Surely the club doctor or the doctor at the field should have the right, or should have an opinion on whether it's a category one or category two.

"It's common sense. He passed it with the doctor at the field, now he's not allowed to play this week, after he just passed the test. It's ridiculous."

No Ponga. So there's that. But other than that, same team basically.

Fifita > Lisone and no Ponga means we don’t get done by 30. Happy to see Turner gets another shot and Marzhew keeps his place otherwise whatever.

Baffles me. Seasons cooked and isaako is going to dolphins.

I thought Holbrook was smarter than that, why would he not try giving the younger fellas a run. We haven't been getting flogged off the park so it's not like they will be coming into a really bad environment.

He's most certainly fighting to save his job and chasing any win he can I guess

Hope we move towards blooding some new players considering player movements next year and the season being done.

Part of the reason 2022 has been so frustrating is because we have been close and sometimes far ahead in many games.

    Round 2: Titans 20 Warriors 18
    Round 3: Raiders 24 Titans 22
    Round 4: Titans 8 Wests Tigers 6
    Round 5: Eels 26 Titans 20
    Round 6: Manly 26 Titans 18
    Round 7: Cowboys 30 Titans 4
    Round 8: Panthers 18 Titans 4
