TITANS lock Tino Fa’asuamaleaui said his former Melbourne roommate Brandon Smith is “changing his mind” daily about his NRL future amid reports the hooker has committed to the Sydney Roosters.

Smith has confirmed to the Storm that 2022 will be his final year in Melbourne but has not announced publicly which club he will join from 2023.

Multiple reports suggest that Smith has agreed to terms with the Roosters, following a controversial podcast appearance in which the 25-year-old pledged he would love to win a premiership in the tricolour’s jersey.

Until Fa’asuamaleaui hears that from Smith or the Roosters he is not buying it.

“Has he signed it officially?” the Titan teased.

“It’s hard to believe what’s happening. He’s changing his mind every day and he’s got some things to weigh up for him and his family.

“It’s the same situation as me, he’ll sit down and talk to his family and then once the official news comes out that’s when I’ll send him a message and say ‘congrats, bro.’”

Fa’asuamaleaui can empathise with the public nature of Smith’s free agency, which has transformed into the NRL’s biggest off-season’s story.

Fa’asuamaleaui signed his $3.3 million, four-year extension with the Titans in November under an intense media spotlight of his own as the Dolphins entered a bidding war for his future.

“You don’t think it (the contract decision) is massive then when you sit down you realise how big it is and how much it plays on your mind,” he said.

“It’s really stressful and I’m glad mine is done.

“You can only imagine what Brandon has been going through and what he’s been reading.”

For their part, the Titans recruitment and retention committee has put a line through Smith as a potential recruit.

“We get on with our job,” chief executive Steve Mitchell said in the days after Smith’s podcast appearance.

“We know what the composition of our squad looks like through to 2025 ... so we’re very excited about the squad that we’ve currently got.”

Nothing article really. Clearly he's told the club he's not coming to the Titans with Mitchell's comments

Idk, I feel like there might be some merit in that. It seems like the process is dragging on considering he's so hellbent on the Roosters. And they were supposed to have it done before the 7th December by his manager's account. Interesting to see what happens.

Apart from being Pearl Harbour Remembrance Day 7 December is just a date ... you'd have to think the Storm are still having a crack.

Seems like if your last name is Smith its got to be a contract saga that last months...

Not holding my breath on Smith. He’s damaged his brand with the Podcast.

Agreed. Although with alot of the gun hookers coming off the market now to other teams Im assuming its Smith or Bust for us as far as trying to pickup a hooker for 2023. Still would like to see us try and lure Clark from the SL if he doesnt want stupid money otherwise its alot of faith in one of our current hookers can take that next step.

I've got the above list broken down on page 1 of this thread, if anyone wants to keep track of the roster, re-signings, etc.

Wallace eyes big 2022 for new Titans deal

    Ed Jackson
    AAP
    December 15, 2021 10:02AM

A lot has changed since Gold Coast forward Jarrod Wallace's NRL playing future was last up in the air.

Wallace last went into a season with less than 12 months to go on his contract in 2018 - and even then he had an option with the Titans in his favour.

After reported interest from Newcastle, the ex-Queensland State of Origin prop chose to stay with the Titans, signing a new deal which not only included his option for 2019 but three more seasons on top of that.

Back then, Garth Brennan was the Titans coach while COVID-19 and coronavirus were terms only familiar to infectious disease specialists.

As the Titans underwent an on-and-off field overhaul under Justin Holbrook, Wallace was in danger of being cast aside.

Axed by Holbrook just three matches into the 2020 season, Wallace knuckled down and forced his way back into the coach's thoughts.

His from resulted in 25 appearances for the Titans this year, including a finals appearance - the most games for Wallace since his final campaign at Brisbane before joining his hometown club in 2016.

It's that kind of consistency the 30-year-old is hoping can secure him a new deal as the Titans begin the journey to realise chief executive Steve Mitchell's vow they will have at least two premiership triumphs in the next nine seasons.

"I started here in 2008 in SG Ball, so I'd love to be able to finish here," Wallace told AAP.

"If that's the case, that'd be absolutely fantastic, but obviously it's not just up to me unfortunately. It's up to the club and it's up to a few other people.

"If I'm just playing my best footy and doing what I do best for the team that obviously puts myself in a good position.

"Just keep taking steps ahead and steps forward and be a bit more consistent with winning games and be that top four team, rather than just a top eight team and just scraping in there.

"We want to be in there comfortably next year."

Highly unlilely Jwal is with us beyond 2022. We're stacked for middles and his body shape + the way he plays isn't that well suited to the way the game is being played now.

I expect him to be at Redcliffe.

    From Fox Sports article today:

Off-contract 2022: Aaron Booth, Herman Ese’ese, Shallin Fuller, Esan Marsters, Sam McIntyre, Kevin Proctor, Phillip Sami, Jarrod Wallace

I would not be resigning Ese Ese, Marsters, Proctor, Sami or Wallace. I would resign McIntyre. Fuller and Booth I would see if they have a breakout season. Still be searching for a Hooker (Smith seems like he may still be a possibility) and a centre to replace Sami and Masters. I would also consider another front rower to replace Wallace although Wallace on minimum wage might be ok.

We've got 2x front rowers coming in from the JTS system on full-time development contracts for 2023 in Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui and Isaac Matalavea-Booth, so they'll fill that minimum wage/development role. We should be well covered for middles with Sam Mac also able to play there.

Agree with who you mention to re-sign. Fuller has a year to prove he's worth keeping around but I think he will. Booth the same and an extension could depend on how well Vaka develops. Marsters I'd consider keeping around as specialist centre depth, although that depends on what the situation is with Spry and how Jojo and Tony Francis develop.

Sami & Marsters are the only outside backs on the roster without contracts beyond 2022.

Top bloke but I tend to agree, he stitched us up last time with the "interest from the broncos" and we ended up with Shannon on top of him. This time he may have to look elsewhere.

It’s a good thing that most of the players I would move on or sign for less are off contract next year. The team is going to look even better in 2023. Wallace is apparently on 600 and Ese Ese is on around 350ish, with all the outside backs we don’t need sami as well. The titans might sign Wallace on a reduced deal as they seem to like him but he’s definitely not needed.

Wallace, when he's on, is a quality player. He's had periods of very poor games but this year he was worth his spend. The team does need on field leaders. He is one.
