AJ can defend and he would sort out our deficiencies in the centres, give him a licence to roam on both sides of the field in attack.

I would like to see this backline next season:

    1. Jayden Campbell
    2. Greg Marzhew
    3. Jojo Fifita
    4. AJ Brimson
    5. Treymaine Sprye
Tony Francis will be in the 3 or 4 alongside jo jo

More on possible Verrills signing in SMH

The Dragons are in the market for a No.9 and have been looking at Sam Verrills and Jacob Liddle, among others.

While Verrills was among the Dragons targets and did entertain interest from the Red V, sources have indicated the Roosters hooker is poised to join the Titans from 2023.

A two-year deal that buys out the remainder of his current tricolours contract is close to being finalised as Brandon Smith prepares to arrive at Bondi next season.

Verrills is set to join Manly veteran Kieran Foran in adding much-needed experience to a talented Gold Coast spine that has struggled since Jamal Fogarty’s exit to Canberra.

The 23-year-old’s four years in the NRL have been hampered by several injuries, including a detached retina last season.

A broken thumb and then fractured collarbone have limited him to just 10 games this year but he has long been highly regarded at the Roosters, scoring the opening try in their 2019 grand final win.

I really hope that the Verrills signing eventuates. This year has shown that you can’t get by without a specialist 9. While Boyd is still a work in progress, Clarke is nothing more than a utility player. I hope that we are also looking at signing another 9 to develop behind Verrills. Who knew things were going to go so downhill by letting go of Rein…

I thought Booth had done well.

I'm with you but that hasn't gone as planned and we will be lucky to see him before about this time next year, God willing.

I feel Verrills is our best option and his injuries aren't the type that typically re-occur just unlucky (shoulder maybe but thumb and retina unlikely). When Booth gets it all together then we have two NRL standard 9's until the next generation steps up.

On Rein, I also was unhappy to see him let go when we were so short of depth at 9 ... he wasn't awesome but an experienced solid 50 minute option.

Of course, let's not rule out Sammy Mac ... lol.

I thought Booth did well too Bayside and if he didn’t get injured I would have expected him to be offered a contract for next year. Unfortunately it is a business and we need as many fit players in our top 30, it would be silly to offer him a deal for next year when he’ll be out for the whole season. I’m sure we could offer him some sort of off field role next season while he recovers.

Jayden Berrel is still off contract next year and stuck behind some decent players. I’m not sure of his injury status but he would provide some good competition for Verrills.

Isn’t it interesting that Reins name hasn’t come up much this year in the media. All this talk about us letting Fogarty go (who was our supposed saviour despite the fact that he couldn’t tackle or finish sets and he wanted to leave), when I would argue our biggest mistake was putting our faith in a hooker who isn’t a hooker and a young half to play the position. The only commentary I’ve seen on it has been Cam Smith (but why would we care about what the best hooker ever to play the game has to say about it eh)..

Agreed. Rein never set the world on fire but he is a reasonably crafty hooker. Clark is a significant downgrade at hooker from him.

Significant downgrade is a bit extreme IMO but I agree keeping Rein would’ve been preferred. Clark is a lock who ran around with the 9 on his back for too long. Sam Mac is clearly the marquee hooker we’ve all been waiting for..

On Verrills, I’ve got him miles ahead of Booth, Berrell (who I like but he’s yet to show he can step up to NRL), or any of the other available options. High IQ player with some details in his game that are rare for someone his age. Keep in mind the Roosters extended him end of 2020 until end of 2024, he was their guy until the new shiny object in Brandon Smith decided he was leaving Melbourne

Now this really excites me. I would love for Corey to come on board. I have called for him in the past.

NRL 2022: Corey Parker offers to help Gold Coast Titans coach Justin Holbrook
The Titans are looking to bring premiership-winners to help under-pressure coach Justin Holbrook, and a former Bronco says he’s the man to help save the club.

Broncos legend Corey Parker has made a sensational offer to help save the embattled Gold Coast Titans.
Parker has offered to join under-pressure Titans coach Justin Holbrook’s coaching staff in a bid to turn around the Gold Coast as it heads for a third wooden spoon.

The second-most capped player in Brisbane’s 34-year history with 347 NRL games, Parker is keen to join the Broncos’ M1 rival to help resurrect the Titans.

Holbrook is beefing up his football department for 2023 following the axing of assistant coach Jim Dymock and fitness chief Klint Hoare, with Titans powerbrokers declaring they will give the head coach all the support he needs to save his career.

And Parker, a former Kangaroos and Queensland Origin star, has thrown his hand up to help the rudderless Titans.

Parker, 40, alluded to his interest in helping the Titans on SEN Radio and confirmed he wanted a coaching position to The Courier-Mail on Tuesday.

“Would I help them out? Yes. What that looks like would have to be up to them,” he said.

“They’ve got some great players, they really do, and a lot of upside. I’ve worked with David Fifita and those sorts of guys already.

“But they’ve got a soft underbelly about what they do. If there was an opportunity for me to help them out, I would certainly explore that.

“I had a role at Brisbane for a period of time but coaching is an itch that you always have. It goes away then comes back.

“If there was an opportunity to explore that at the Titans I would consider it.”

Parker retired from the NRL in 2016 following a sensational career which took him within a whisker of Darren Lockyer’s 355-game Broncos record.

The tireless forward featured in Brisbane’s 2006 premiership team, played in the 2015 grand final loss to North Queensland and also made 19 Origin appearances to go with 13 Kangaroos caps.

With Canterbury great Dymock departing abruptly last month, Holbrook’s support staff is lacking genuine NRL pedigree and profile.

That could change with a proven performer like Parker, who admitted star power was important when it came to coaching the modern day NRL player.

“I’ve seen it first hand at Brisbane with the millennial player,” he said.

“If you’ve been there and done that, it matters. Whether you’ve won a comp, played State of Origin or for your country … it carries a lot of weight.

“It shouldn’t because you should respect your coach if you’re a player. But with the modern day player it just doesn’t happen like that.

“I’ve seen players that don’t react to assistant coaches who don’t have the experience or runs on the board. They don’t resonate with the players.

“In the same breath, just because you’ve done a lot in the game doesn’t make you a good coach.

“From a personal level, I believe I could bring some value. Footy games are generally won and lost between Monday and Friday. That’s what I believe.”

The Titans boast a stacked forward pack with the likes of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, David Fifita and Moeaki Fotuaika, who Parker believes he can help improve as players.

Parker, who still trains hard and practices the standards he preaches, could become the second Broncos great to join the Titans, with Gorden Tallis throwing his support behind the Gold Coast as an off-field “ambassador”.

Parker was an assistant to former Broncos coaches Anthony Seibold and Wayne Bennett before severing ties with current Brisbane boss Kevin Walters.

But he still has a burning desire to coach and believes he can help transform the Titans following the disaster of 2022, in which they have only won three games ahead of Sunday’s clash against Manly.

“The Broncos are in my DNA but that doesn’t mean I can’t do what I believe in with other people,” Parker said.

“It is what it is. The door may or may not have shut at Brisbane, I don’t know. At the moment I don’t see them changing anything they’ve got going on, which is fine.

“I genuinely feel if I was able to have an opportunity with the Titans, based on where they’re at, I can be of some value.

“My strength is to stay in my own lane – that’s with the forwards. The head coach would have to be accepting and wanting of that.

“I really like Justin Holbrook from my dealings with him. I don’t know what makes him tick and the finer details, but from the conversations I’ve had with him, I like his intel and thought process on the game.

“Queensland now has four NRL teams (Dolphins joining next year) and it’s a good thing for rugby league when Queensland teams are going well.

“I feel the qualities I have would work to benefit what I’ve seen from the Titans.”

The only redeeming factors are that he has ties to Coast, we need somebody with a different view, he has some creds and if he was ar$ed from the Ponies then that's maybe a good thing considering where they were at that time. Not my dish though.

One of the most exciting young hookers in the competition will head to the Gold Coast in 2023 with Sam Verrills to become a Titan.

The 23-year-old joins the club from the Sydney Roosters.

Verrills has already achieved premiership success as part of the Roosters grand final winning side in 2019.

Titans Coach Justin Holbook says he’s excited to add a player of Verrills’ calibre to the Gold Coast spine next season.

“Sam has great vision and is a real threat from that hooker position," he said.

“He’s learnt his craft under Origin hooker Jake Friend and has been able to really shine in that number nine jersey for the Roosters in recent seasons.

“We’ve got great experience joining our spine next year with the arrival of Kieran Foran and our key positions will be further bolstered with Sam’s arrival.

“When you add those two players to our mix of exciting young players who have come through our pathway programs here on the Coast like AJ Brimson, Jayden Campbell and Toby Sexton, we’re really confident with the squad we are building for next year and beyond.”

Verrills will officially become at Titan from November 1 and is locked in for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
