Gold Coast Titans appoint ex-Canterbury Bulldogs crowd favorite Jamie Feeney as NRLW coach
    https://www.themercury.com.au/

An ex-Canterbury Bulldogs NRL crowd favorite has been appointed head of the Gold Coast Titans NRLW program.

Jamie Feeney, the headgear wearing warrior who Canterbury fans adored for playing above his weight, will pilot the Titans entry into the NRLW world.

The Gold Coast Titans are tipped to be one of three new teams entering into the NRLW, which will be played later in the season.

The Titans did not wish to comment, but News’ can confirm Feeney, a veteran of 112 games for the Bulldogs and 20 for Melbourne, would be the head coach.

He has extensive coaching experience having been Jillaroos assistant since 2016 and coach of the strong Roosters women’s program.

Feeney is currently head coach of the Marsden SHS girls’ rugby league program which is gathering momentum alongside an array of coaches including Keeown Rawnsley (former NRL Girls Participation State-wide coordinator), Australian Wallaroo and Reds player Cobie Jane Morgan and Asako Ono, a Wallaroos and Reds rugby representative.

Feeney has made an instant impression at Marsden SHS.

Only last week two outstanding players from his side, the Barty girls, praised Feeney for his expertise.

Feeney’s year 11-12 Marsden SHS are unbeaten in the Titans Schools League competition which is played each Wednesday.

The NRL plan to expand the women’s premiership from four to six teams.

The Broncos, Roosters and Dragons would continue in the competition, but with the Warriors dropping out, three new teams would be included to make it six.

One of those will be the Titans.

The Titans entry into the NRLW would provide another platform for young women playing league to remain in Queensland.

Previously a small army of Queensland schoolgirls, headed by Keliee Joseph (Roosters), have travelled to Sydney in search of opportunities they felt did not exist in their home state.

    But all that will change.

A host of outstanding young players are emerging through the Titans Schools League system including year 10 Mabel Park SHS student Malaela Su’a, Year 7-8 Marsden SHS players Janique Mili and Lilli Lewis and the Baty twins, among others from Ipswich SHS and Keebra Park SHS.

I'm not an expert on Womens RL but I'm guessing by the quality of the Burleigh team that we'd be able to put together a decent side? I know a few of the best players in Aus are from the GC and play for other teams in the NRLW so hopefully this is a chance to allow them to play for their home region.

I reckon if we can get the GC girls already playing NRLW in our team and supplement them with our best juniors then we will go pretty good straight away.

The team would be able to draw from elsewhere in SEQLD/QLD and further afield in addition.

I'm really excited about this. Also great to hear about the added angle of the partnership with Marsden SHS and Feeney.

    Titans launch 2021 NRLW team
    https://www.titans.com.au/

The Gold Coast Titans will join the NRLW competition in 2021 and the club is determined to bring the trophy back to the Coast.

Home to some of the best female athletes in the country, the Gold Coast will now provide a pathway from juniors to the national stage as Titans.

Titans CEO Steve Mitchell says the announcement is significant for the Gold Coast.

“Entry to the NRLW has been a key aspiration of the club for a number of years with the region being one of the strongest nurseries of elite female Rugby League player talent in the country,” Mitchell said.

“We want to ensure that the best of our young local talent have a direct pathway to the national stage.

“Now, with this announcement, you can graduate from the Titans School League, into our Junior Titans System and progress into NRLW.”

Titans co-owner Rebecca Frizelle says it’s time that the region’s best female athletes become Titans.

“This is a wonderful and significant step forward in the evolution of our club,” Frizelle said.

“There is a place in the game for everyone at the Titans and this announcement demonstrates that women’s game is a strategic imperative for our organisation.

“Our NRLW program is fundamental to the success of the Titans now and into the years to come.

“As a club we are intrinsically connected to the region we represent and now, through our NRLW team, young girls will have athletes that they can aspire to be.”

The Titans will announce key coaching and playing appointments in the coming weeks as the club builds towards the start of the 2021 NRLW Premiership.

Knights, Titans and Eels to join NRLW in 2021
    https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/06/11/...-nrlw-in-2021/

Newcastle, Parramatta and Gold Coast will enter the NRL Telstra Women's Premiership in 2021 following confirmation the competition will expand to six teams for the upcoming season.

The NRL announced the changes on Friday with a five-round and finals series scheduled to begin in August and run in line with the men's NRL Telstra Premiership from round 23.

It is the first time expansion has occurred in the NRLW since its arrival in 2018 with the confirmation offering clarity for players leading into Ampol Women's State of Origin after months of speculation.

"Women's rugby league is the fastest-growing part of our sport and it's exciting to be in a position to expand the competition after the success of the last three seasons," NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said.

"The NRLW competition has produced some of the best athletes in Australia, it's captivated a new fanbase and today's expansion will give more players the opportunity to play in an elite competition."

The new NRLW clubs will join inaugural teams, three-time champions Brisbane, St George Illawarra and the Sydney Roosters.

The Warriors, who rallied to field a team last season despite the implications of COVID-19, have pulled out of the competition after three years of involvement.

It is hoped they can return in 2022, where the NRL hopes to further expand to eight NRLW teams.

"The Warriors were part of the first four clubs to join the NRLW competition and we are grateful for the commitment they made right from the start, particularly during the pandemic last year," Abdo said.

"It's been an incredibly challenging period for the club during COVID and I'm confident we will see the Warriors return to the competition in 2022 as part of our expansion plans."

The new-look competition is expected to include talent equalisation across all 24-player squads, enabling new clubs to be able to recruit top-tier players in the game despite their current allegiances.

That predicament may not bode well for the Broncos, who have the Titans to fend off as they look to keep their premiership-winning side together.

The Titans have reportedly been linked to former Roosters NRLW coach Jamie Feeney to help get the franchise up and running.

Feeney's involvement with the Titans is a wise investment after he turned the Roosters from cellar dwellers into grand finalists and also for his general knowledge of the women's game.

Newcastle are expected to be coached by retired Knights playmaker Blake Green, who has previously worked with the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns.

    More to come ...
