2020 - Proctor, Stone, Hipgrave, Cartwright, Fermor, Farmer, Seiuli
2021 - Fifita, Proctor, Stone, Fermor, McIntyre, Farmer, Vuna*

Did I miss anyone? I was under the impression we had signed too many as well but looking at the above we’ve got the same as 2020. Just much better players.
*Vuna I believe is on a development or T&T contract as well.

I’m concerned about our centre options too but I think the issue there is because we have 5 wingers that cannot play centre. Don, Sami, Thompson, Marzhew, Pearson. Then Spry, the one who can play both, could be our best winger.

On McIntyre - he was arguably tigers best forward this year. Good player and we would’ve secured him for good value too.

I’m flummoxed by how many 2nd rowers we have in our squad now.
Titans sign Keegan Hipgrave replacement: Zero error Tigers rookie Sam McIntyre

THE Gold Coast Titans have moved swiftly to replace departing forward Keegan Hipgrave by securing promising Wests Tigers rookie Sam McIntyre on a two-year contract.

The 22-year-old forward played 12 matches for the Tigers in 2020, including two starts in the second row, but declined a one-year extension at Wests to sign Gold Coast’s longer deal.

McIntyre is the 29th player to sign on with the Titans in 2021, leaving just one roster spot to complete the squad one week before the team begins training.

The 190 centimetre, 100 kilogram McIntyre is a larger man than the 183 centimetre, 102 kilogram Hipgrave and more efficient in areas of the game his predecessor struggled.

The oft-maligned Hipgrave conceded five penalties and committed 11 errors in 791 minutes on the field in 2021.

n McIntyre’s 442 minutes he conceded three penalties and recorded zero errors.

McIntyre is also the more accurate defender, completing 94 per cent of tackles (280/299) to Hipgrave’s 87 per cent (356/411).

The pair are evenly matched in attack with Hipgrave running for 34 centimetres per carry more than McIntyre but at a slightly reduced rate, with 0.14 carries per minute to McIntyre’s 0.18.

With McIntyre’s signature the Titans have assembled 29 players for their 30-man 2021 roster.

While centre Brian Kelly has called for the team to sign Ballina product James Roberts to complete their roster, second rower Beau Fermor showed glimpses of his potential in the backline with a try on debut in the No.3 jersey.

Hooker remains the team’s most pressing concern with former Manly Sea Eagle Danny Levi the highest profile rake on the open market.

So only one spot. We no longer can go and get both a Centre and Hooker. It’s now one or the other. How about James Roberts being brought up in the article. That will light up the forum if he’s signed.

TITANS centre Brian Kelly has called on the club to toss James Roberts a career lifeline on the Gold Coast to transform their three-quarter line into an NRL speed machine.

The fastest centre in rugby league has been released from the final year of his South Sydney Rabbitohs contract and now sits unemployed just 90 minutes south of Titans HQ, at Ballina.

Kelly, who formed a close friendship with Roberts in 2015, said if he was in charge of recruitment he would target the former New South Wales Origin speedster for 2021.

“They call him Jimmy the Jet because he’s fast, and anyone with that speed a club would love to have,” Kelly said.

“If I’m a recruitment officer for the club I’m definitely putting him in the books.”

The Titans have the highest representation of Indigenous players in the NRL, which Kelly said could prove the key to helping Roberts reclaim the form that saw him win the Dally M Centre of the Year at Gold Coast.

Kelly’s time at Manly proved how valuable that cultural support can be.

“It’s pretty important to me,” Kelly said.

“I was at Manly for two years and there were only two or three (Indigneous players).

“To come up to Gold Coast where there’s about six to eight of us, and having weeks like this with NAIDOC, just having us all around the community means a lot to us.

“Being around other Indigenous players, talking about old times and you have similarities, he (Roberts) could fit in well.

“It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it.”

Brian Kelly has won the 2020 Gold Coast Titans Paul Broughton Medal. Picture: Supplied.

The Titans’ centre depth is shallow at best behind Kelly, with winger Treymain Spry and new recruit Patrick Herbert expected to duel for the right centre position this pre-season.

Roberts will not command the $500,000 salary he left behind at South Sydney, nor did he leave the Rabbitohs on bad terms.

The isolation of life in a COVID-19 bubble took a toll on the star’s mental health and a stint in a Sydney rehab clinic is proof of that.

There is hope a return to the friends who helped him rise above a traumatic childhood to NRL stardom at Gold Coast could inspire another Lazarus rise for Roberts career.

The Titans backline is short of white hot speed outside of Phillip Sami and AJ Brimson.

James Roberts? No thanks. His time in the Titans jersey should be long over.

No to roberts ever. Hughes is just a badel stitch up and a quiet day at the courier mail. McIntyre's signing is perplexing but Holbrook seems to have a plan so I trust his decision making. As for the centres, Kelly has one locked in, maybe they will be looking at spry for the other. Can't see fermor being a long term solution. I am not sure we need a hooker with the rein and boyd rotation working well at the end of the year. That's not to say we don't watch what happens with the storm and their 3 top line hookers. I think we have had so much change in the team it may be worth consolidating.

Gold Coast Titans set to make play for Cameron Smith

Melbourne Storm legend Cameron Smith is currently living on the Gold Coast and Titans officials are looking to cash in.

The Gold Coast Titans have not closed the door on making a play for Cameron Smith with the Queensland legend revealing he is open to a coaching consultancy role when he retires.

The Courier-Mail can reveal the Titans are ready to throw their hat in the ring for Smith as a specialist coach or even player if he decides to continue his glittering NRL career in 2021.

Smith is expected to announce his retirement from the NRL imminently, possibly at the launch of his autobiography, The Storm Within, at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Monday.

But if the 37-year-old shocks the NRL and decides to play on into a 20th season, the Titans have not ruled out making an audacious bid to sign him.

Smith and his family have been living on the Gold Coast since Melbourne’s NRL grand final win on October 25 after buying a house during the season.

Melbourne Storm figures believe Smith will retire from playing and are hoping he will remain involved with the club he made a record 430 appearances for in either a coaching, consultancy or board member capacity.

Smith was coy when asked if he would entertain a move to the Titans, but admitted specialist coaching had an appeal to him.

“That’s a fair way off my radar,” Smith said of the Titans.

“If I’m playing I’ll be playing and if not I’ll have to find a job somewhere.

“I’d like to think that I’ve probably done a little bit of coaching without really knowing or realising that I’ve been doing it.

“I’ve actually enjoyed helping those (young Melbourne) guys become consistent first graders and that’s why I was extremely happy the other night after that grand final. I was able to help those younger guys experience winning a premiership.

“Looking at what (Melbourne coach) Craig Bellamy has done really closely over the last 18 years, I don’t think I want to be a head coach. I don’t want the stress.

“But I could certainly see myself working as more of a specialist coach with young halves or working with leadership groups or something like that.

“That’s not as stressful as being the head coach with a camera on you all game like in the coaches’ box.”

The Storm are desperate to keep Smith involved with the club and chairman Matt Tripp is planning to fly to the Gold Coast to meet with him as soon as Queensland’s border opens to Victoria.

The biggest advantage for the Titans is geography and the club’s steady rise if Smith continues to live on the Gold Coast.

While the Storm are open to designing an off-field role for Smith, the proximity of the Titans could play a role in his future.

The Titans’ head of culture Mal Meninga also has a relationship with Smith, having coached him for more than a decade in the Queensland and Australia teams.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook said he had not spoken to Smith, but admitted he would add immense value to the club in any role.

“I still expect it to be retirement or playing at Melbourne,” Holbrook said.

“I still think he could play at Melbourne. With his age and experience he wouldn’t be required back there until the end of January. I am only guessing.

“I haven’t spoken to him. I’d be thinking it was unlikely he’d end up here. Until we know what he is doing I don’t know.

“He would be great to utilise with the player he has been. He would be good.

“The only reservation around that is we have heard the Melbourne chairman say whether he plays or not he has got a job there.

“Without speaking to him and getting an idea on what he wants to do, I don’t know what to say.”

In his book, Smith says he did not want to jeopardise the futures of emerging Storm hookers Harry Grant and Brandon Smith by playing on in Melbourne next year.

That effectively brings an end to Smith’s Melbourne career and Grant said he was left stunned by the revelation.

“That’s pretty hard to take, Cam saying that,” he said.

“I’m going back down to Melbourne. I think we start pre-season January 4. I’ll get a good break, back home to Yeppoon and then get back into it.”

The Centre’s will be Kelly and Herbert with Spry, Sami, Fermor and others as the back up.

BK realises South's also had a fairly strong cohort of indigenous players right? He'd have to be on close to minimum to even entertain it surely, as well as South's behavioural get out clauses.

I'd sign Roberts in a heartbeat. By that I mean if the club needs me to fake sign a contract on their behalf so we can sack him after every other club has signed its 30 players then we could sack him for a fake contract.

Guy bashes bar maids (allegedly) too don't forget. Best for the game if he disappears.
