Peter V’landys vows: NRL season will continue despite AFL bombshell
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

Despite the AFL’s bombshell decision to postpone its season, Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’Landys says the NRL has not changed its stance.

The Australian Government will work with both the AFL and NRL sporting codes as further domestic travel restrictions are set to be announced.

Peter V’landys has vowed that the NRL will play on and not follow the lead set by the AFL to shut down the game unless they are forced to.

In the wake of the AFL’s bombshell decision to postpone its season on Sunday afternoon, the Australian Rugby League Commission chairman told The Daily Telegraph that the NRL had not changed its stance.

V’landys was aware of the AFL’s move but said the NRL was in a better position to push forward because it had already implemented chartered flights to transport every team.

It is understood a meeting of the national cabinet on Sunday night will draft legislation to prevent all interstate travel that is deemed non-essential.

But this is also expected to include wiggle room for the individual state premiers to allow sports to continue and it will be judged on a case-to-case basis.

“I honestly don’t know (if this could change),” V’landys said, “it is moving so fast.

“We have said from day one that we will act in accordance with the medical health officers and the biosecurity experts.

“It is much harder for the AFL to be fair to them because they have got teams in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

“So all these travel restrictions are certainly going to affect them.

“We are a little bit different.

“If the health authorities allow it we will be still playing.

“Unless the chief medical officers say otherwise.”

V’landys thinks sporting teams will be able to travel interstate as long as they have proper health standards in place.

V’landys said there was no plan as yet to get all NRL teams to play out of one state.

“Not at this stage because while we can still have chartered planes to take them around and the states allow us like South Australia has there is no difference,” V’landys said.

Earlier, V’landys said he had not received any confirmation from the government that the NRL season would be suspended immediately and said that the decision to implement private flights for all teams could save the game.

“We are just checking at the moment to see what this non-essential travel means but first off we charter our planes and secondly it is work travel,” V’landys said.

“The Prime Minister did say travel for work was still ok.

“We are going to investigate and see what it all means but I am not overly panicking at the moment because there is not enough detail.

“We have to look at all contingencies and I have to wait until tonight because there could be more (updates) because national cabinet is meeting tonight.

“It just highlights what I said last Sunday.

“We have to plan for every contingency and what we are doing today we might not be doing tomorrow. Decisions we make today will probably change tomorrow.”

The NRL has already locked out all non-essential staff from games and have introduced strict self-isolation guidelines.

So if we shut down, will this year count as a year on a contract. Are contracts negotiated for a specific years end or are they for “x” amount of years?

Cabinet Meeting tonight and inclusion of Premiers. Let's see what happens. It's a gut churning situation for everyone and the game.

    Our club is extremely vulnerable.

NRL clubs to make ’brutal’ staffing cuts across league in bid to stay afloat during coronavirus crisis
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

NRL clubs will this week take drastic measures to make collective payroll savings of $350,000 a week as the economic impact of COVID-19 continues to bite, directly affecting around 250 workers across the league.

The Australian Government will work with both the AFL and NRL sporting codes as further domestic travel restrictions are set to be announced.

Almost 250 staff members at NRL football clubs could face redundancy as early as Monday, saving financially crippled clubs around $10 million for the rest of this season.

NRL club chief executives were bunkered down over the weekend trying to settle a “brutal” employment cull.

The gut-wrenching cutbacks will allow clubs to collectively save clubs around $350,000 a week.

Individual meetings between CEOs and worried staff members will begin at most clubs this morning.

The Daily Telegraph has been told around one-third of football club staff at all 16 clubs will face four options:

    * Being made redundant;

    * Told to take annual leave;

    * Offered leave without pay; or

    * Take accrued long service leave.

Either way, clubs will be decimated just two weeks into the season. One CEO predicted it would be a “brutal” week.

The options available will however allow the possibility of staff being re-employed and not sacked.

Another CEO said: “We have to look at the expenses to make sure we are still alive after all this is over.”

The amount of employees to leave will vary at each club with Manly and Cronulla operating with just 30 staff while Brisbane has around 90.

Club chief executives discussed the cut backs during a phone hook-up on Friday while many contacted each again over the weekend.

One club CEO said: “I suspect every club will be standing down at least a third of their workforce. It will be a brutal week. Most clubs late last week were building up their plans to stand down staff after this week.

“It will depend on each individual club but most will offer long service, standing down without pay, annual leave and some, as a worst case, will have to accept redundancies.”

Given the confusion surrounding coronavirus clubs simply won’t be able to tell staff offered leave without pay when they could return to work.

“But the worst is still to come,” said one CEO. “Most clubs will keep the jobs open and employees may return if there’s a miracle cure or the Government shutdown is successful.

“Hopefully things will pick up in the third quarter of this year and clubs can bring them back quickly and get moving again.

“We are all trying to keep everyone together in the game but it’s not going to be a pretty week.”

Penrith claim that matches in empty stadiums will cost the club around $5 million.

“So some staff members have gone on holidays or taken long service,” Panthers group CEO Brian Fletcher said.

“They all have jobs still at this stage but it just depends on what happens in the foreseeable future.

“There won’t be any football played at Penrith Stadium which has immediately put a $5m hole in the budget.”

You could imagine dozens of sponsors across the game feeling strained or falling over. And looking for get outs or to end partnerships.

NRL is apparently the only pro-sport not suspended in the world.

As amazing and brazen as that is. It'd defy the odds to stay that way.

NRL isn’t the only ones having those meetings. I suspect 95% of businesses will be having the same meetings on Monday and onwards too.

Everything takes a hit ... I'm in international education, so first China was shut and now China is re-opening but the rest of the world is shut ... cashflow is non-existent for the foreseeable future, so businesses are all re-purposing, riding it out, suspending services or closing ... law firms are doing fine interpreting contracts.

    NRL season suspended
    https://www.theaustralian.com.au/

The NRL season has been suspended indefinitely, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reports.

The NRL has scheduled a hook-up between club chief executives early on Monday night, which is expected to formally postpone the premier rugby league competition.

The closing of the Queensland borders ended hopes of keeping the season alive, the newspaper reported.

The move comes hours after the NRL forced staff to take forced annual leave while clubs across the game had to make huge staffing cuts.

I remember Cronulla players all taking 50% pay cuts in the early 80s to stop it going under.
These blokes through their undermining Henry/Brennan and sooking it up, taking living on the GC for granted, not having pride in the jumper, the kids, the members, the staff and community have put Sir Daryl and Bec in a really tough predicament as they weren’t given an opportunity to grow the club because of what an insipid **** show they’ve been.

Let’s see this playing group do the same and offer a 50% pay cut (or more) to repay them, the club and community.

    It’s happened before.

Saw that coming weeks ago, was always going to be the case. Sad day. Maybe the last we see of the titans and a few other clubs. RL as it is now is gone never to be the same again.

What has surprised me is on NRL 360 they started saying that certain clubs will struggle to survive and I braced myself for them to go piling in on us but they didn’t mention us they talked about Manly and Cronulla.
