Gold Coast Titans outline plan to survive COVID-19 pandemic and season shutdown
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au

The Titans will turn to the government to help pay staff after the NRL season was cancelled in the coronavirus pandemic.

THE Gold Coast Titans will keep a skeleton staff on half pay and take advantage of government wage subsidies to survive the suspension of the NRL season.

In an email to sponsors, Chief Executive Officer Steve Mitchell said the move was made to keep the business functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic until the 2020 season resumes.

Mr Mitchell said the owners and the board tried to “reduce the impact on our passionate and dedicated staff”.

“The Titans will access payments from the Australian Government’s JobKeeper wage subsidy and the Queensland Government’s payroll tax concessions to support club staff temporarily stood down during this period,” he said.

“This will ensure the impact on our staff is reduced as much as possible, and their jobs will be here to return to at the end of this situation.

“We know that many of you, our trusted and valued family of sponsors, are currently experiencing similar pain in your own industries, and being faced with making similar – if not even more painful – decisions with your own staff.”

Mr Mitchell said the club and supporters “will get through this together” and the Titans “needs your support now more than ever”.

He said Titans general manager of commercial Jonathon Stewart and himself would be available to answer questions and offer support.

Talk if the season restarts the ladder starts fresh. Guess Uncle Nick isn’t happy with where the Roosters are on the table. Good news for us too obviously.

All clubs should donate a Kiwi and form a New Zealand New Warriors side.

Commission to sign off on NRL return with May 21 start earmarked
    https://www.smh.com.au/

The key phone call that saw hundreds of infected passengers spill into Sydney
The ARL Commission is tomorrow expected to sign off on the return of the NRL competition from as early as May 21.

The Herald has been told by sources with knowledge of the negotiations that a Sydney-based, 15-round season is the preferred option of the two proposals that will be discussed at the NRL innovation committee meeting tomorrow morning.

Following the meeting, a recommendation will be put to the commission and a decision on the structure and future of the game is likely to be announced.

The alternative proposal, which was met with resistance from some of the players on an RLPA phone hook-up on Wednesday, is a two-conference system, splitting the competition in half.

After high-level discussions between the NSW government and NRL powerbrokers, Sydney-based players will be allowed to remain at home when the competition resumes, which was well-received by the RLPA, whose members were reluctant to undergo solitary confinement.

Border restrictions will see the North Queensland Cowboys, Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, Melbourne Storm and New Zealand Warriors move to Sydney for at least two weeks, when it is hoped they may be able to return home and resume travelling interstate on chartered flights on game day.

The Knights and Raiders are expected to stay in Newcastle and Canberra respectively and travel to Sydney on game day.

The Warriors, who will be given exemptions to travel restrictions by the New Zealand and Australian governments, will have to isolate together for 14 days, but they will be able to train.

The NRL is optimistic of the competition returning on May 21, although May 28 seems the more likely of the two dates.

Delicate negotiations between the governing body and its broadcast partners were held this week and will continue, with State of Origin now firming to be played in the traditional mid-season format.

If the NRL succeeds in its plans for a May return, the grand final will be played in its traditional time slot, the first Sunday in October.

Twenty-four hours ago, the NRL was preparing to isolate teams in a western Sydney bubble, but those plans have been significantly affected by the state government’s overnight assessment of the crisis.

The government has expressed its confidence in the NRL to respond to any changes in the health situation.

A secondary outbreak could see the NRL return to the bubble model later in the year, although the advice it has received predicts the daily increase in COVID-19 cases will be less than one per cent by the time of the NRL's planned return in mid-May.

The NRL is hopeful that by mid-June all states will relax their restrictions and it will be able to return to playing games at venues around the country, albeit without crowds in attendance.

I can't see clubs or players agreeing to the conference system. It will be interesting to see how it all happens.

Good news all - Rugby league is officially back on May 28th! Not sure if I want to see the team if they play like they did the first 2 weeks but good to have them back nonetheless.

ARL Commission announces date for NRL to restart
    http://www.nrl.com

The ARL Commission has announced the NRL is planning to restart the competition on May 28 and also intends to play a full three-game State of Origin series.

In making the announcement, the NRL reiterated that the grand final would remain in its traditional format of one match, played in Sydney.

The NRL's innovations committee and the ARL Commission each met on Thursday to discuss rescheduling the season due to the hiatus brought about last month by the coronavirus pandemic. A phone hook-up was then held with representatives from each of the 16 clubs.

In its statement, the NRL said it would continue to work with governments in Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand about what restrictions may look like at the end of May.

ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce, who is heading up the innovations committee, said: "I'm pleased to announce we're planning a competition start on May 28.

"The details on the competition structure we haven't got yet because the landscape is changing around government boundaries. That will feed into the complexity structure.

There's a lot of people that will be happy with the decision to get the competition running again.

"Today what we landed on was a starting date.

"We haven't finalised what that [competition] looks like yet. Why we want to firm up a date is to give certainty to players and their schedules, clubs and thousands of people who are out of work through clubs and millions of fans.

"It's a mark for everyone to work towards that's associated with the game."

Roosters coach Trent Robinson, Raiders CEO Don Furner, RLPA CEO Clint Newton, former NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant and the NRL's chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo, chief corporate affairs officer Liz Deegan and head of football Graham Annesley are also on the innovations committee.

ARL chairman Peter V'landys said their goal was "to give as much certainty as we can in uncertain times".

"There is clear evidence the curve is flattening. The NSW Government has done a great job in reducing the infection rate from 22.27% when we suspended the competition to 1.43% today.

"The situation is changing dramatically and we need to get moving. It is in the best interests of our clubs, our players, our stakeholders and importantly our fans that the competition resumes as quickly and as safely as possible.

"We have said right from the start that what we say today may need to change tomorrow. We will be flexible, and if the trend changes or if government restrictions change then so will we. The health and safety of our players and the general public remains the absolute priority."

Pearce echoed those comments by saying it was impossible to predict the future with any great certainty.

"Because we're talking about seven weeks away the landscape is changing significantly," Pearce said.

"It was only a few days ago it was looking like we were having to go into an isolation bubble scenario with the support of a state government who are doing a fantastic job."

Pearce indicated the draw for the rest of the season would not be split into conferences.

"We're leaning towards a competition structure that looks more aligned with what we've currently got. We're not going to the conference scenario at the moment," he said.

"We've currently got support from the NSW government in terms of if we adhere to public health guidelines and make sure our players follow those guidelines we are able to train and play provided we have strict measures around testing the players and put other protocols in place to minimise the risk of infection within the playing group and community.

"What's really important for us is the welfare issue. We're working with respective governments - NZ, Victorian and Queensland - for teams that have to travel. The welfare issue of players being away from families is a significant factor we need to address."

He added the players had been involved in the entire process via RLPA boss Clint Newton.

As to when the season was likely to end, Pearce said: "That's the piece of work we need to do that's subject to a number of variables, one of which is government regulations.

"If they're stringent and players aren't able to go back to their home environment that makes it difficult to expect them to be away from their kids for a long period of time.

"I think there's a lot of positives with the competition up and running again. The players, staff at clubs, services to clubs that will benefit. There's a lot of people that will be happy with the decision to get the competition running again."

When asked about Channel Nine declaring it was unhappy with the financial management of the game on Thursday, Pearce said: "They're a key partner for us and we intend to fulfil our contractual obligations. We hope to maintain a working relationship that will work for both parties."

So after copping a heap of flak for wasting money the league sets up an innovations committee, which I am sure weren't doing it for free, and they come up with a shortened season with origin on the middle...…… Really, if that's innovation then league is in more trouble than I thought.

One positive of what is happened, including with Channel Nine is that the NRLs off field processes will be far more efficient with more money going to the grassroots.

Channel Nein (sic) can go and burn in hell ... no problem with seeing the back of Greenbutt, however the blatant crying poor from the organization that has inflicted so much self-interest on our sport is disgusting. Run the sport lean and mean while stepping completely into the digital age will do me.
