This may be AFL but Cartlon just made cuts with a feeder club and as a result Northern Blues don't exisit. Wikipedia already updated in the past tense! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Blues

When the start of the 2020 AFL and VFL seasons, along with all other football, were suspended as a result of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, Carlton was forced to cut its expenses, and this included withdrawing its financial support for Northern, and ending its reserves affiliation. As a result, the Northern Blues club was wound up and dissolved prior to the resumption of football after the pandemic.

Looks like we are heading into a lockdown imminently. Hope everyone is healthy and stays that way. There are going to be some massive issues we are all going to come across at the same time so hope we can all at least be there for each other even in the smallest amount to help everyone get through this.

    2020 QRL statewide competitions cancelled
    https://www.titans.com.au/

Queensland Rugby League has today confirmed the cancellation of its four statewide competitions in 2020 due to the ongoing public health emergency.

The unprecedented decision to bring a premature close the Intrust Super Cup, BHP Premiership, Hastings Deering Colts and Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup was made in the interests of the health and safety of players and staff.

QRL managing director Robert Moore acknowledged the enormity of the decision, which comes after the initial move to suspend the competitions after Round 1 earlier this month.

“We understand the outcome is a heartbreaking one for the rugby league community, but it’s a call that simply had to be made given the current circumstances,” Moore said.

“Rugby league is part of the fabric of Queensland, and as such we have key responsibilities to the wider community as well.

“These four competitions require a significant level of travel and accommodation, both of which pose a risk to the health of our participants and possibly others.”

Moore said there was some light at the end of the tunnel.

“By making this announcement now, it provides our clubs with the opportunity to re-set and turn their attention towards the 2021 season,” Moore said.

“It also gives the clubs some much-needed breathing space to concentrate on important off-field matters.

“Financial sustainability is crucial for all clubs moving forward, and we’ll continue to work closely with each of them during this challenging period.”

Moore congratulated the entire rugby league community for the way it had come together during the public health emergency.

“The game is resilient – and so are our people,” Moore said.

“It’s not going to be easy, but we’re all in this together.

“We are fortunate to have the support of so many great partners, including Intrust Super, BHP, Hastings Deering and Auswide Bank.

“It is also comforting to have the backing of the Australian Rugby League Commission and the National Rugby League, as well as the Queensland Government and the game’s broadcasters, during such a difficult period.”

Titans have showed two classic games on the website, with both being losses against the Dragons in 07 and Broncos in 09...I understand they have historical meaning but geez you’d think after waiting almost 12 months without a win, the club could show us fans a past win

The first game I can understand and it was a noble game. But how about showing when we beat them at Lang Park in 2007?

Gold Coast Titans one of just two NRL clubs yet to wield staff axe in wake of coronavirus epidemic
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

While nearly every club in the NRL has slashed costs, stood down staff and made employees redundant, the entire Titans staff of about 50, excluding players, currently remains employed and on full pay.

The NRL club that was tipped to be the first to crumble is one of the last standing.

The Gold Coast Titans are yet to make any significant changes to their club structure following the indefinite suspension of the 2020 NRL season.

Nearly every other club in the NRL has slashed costs, stood down staff and made employees redundant.

But the entire Titans staff of about 50, excluding players, currently remains employed and on full pay.

The Titans and Sydney Roosters are the only two clubs yet to announce wholesale changes to stay afloat with no broadcast and game-day revenue.

The Titans are still assessing their financial situation and are likely to make changes following a board meeting on Friday.

But CEO Steve Mitchell is adamant the club will not have to sack numerous employees to stay afloat.

“We didn’t want to react really quickly, we wanted to be as considered and informed as we could be,” he said.

“The government initiatives around support have been coming daily and we were conscious of what we were going to do.

“We want all of our people with us when we get through the back end of this. We want to get back to business as quickly as possible.

“We’re taking our time. The competition was only suspended nine days ago. We want to get our modelling right.

“We’re all under significant financial pressure. A lot of the other clubs have gone back to skeleton staff and redundancies. We won’t be going to that extent.

“There will definitely be a change in our model in the short term. We need to adapt, similar to other businesses, to get through the short term.

“Then we’ll turn the lights on and get back to business.”

The Titans run a much leaner operation compared to southeast Queensland rivals, the Brisbane Broncos, who last week made about 20 employees redundant.

The Gold Coast club has previously struggled financially and was taken over by the NRL in 2015 after essentially crumbling under debt.

The club has continued to operate on a shoestring budget compared to some of the NRL heavyweights since being taken over by new owners.

A lack of success has raised concerns about the Gold Coast’s long-term viability, but club powerbrokers and the NRL are determined to make sure the Titans survive in the region.

New coach Justin Holbrook has endured a unique start to his NRL coaching career, overseeing two games before the competition was suspended.

But he is hoping he can get the Titans’ 2020 campaign back on track with a full complement of staff if the season recommences in the coming months.

“The club hasn’t had to rush a decision,” Holbrook said.

“A lot of clubs have had their hands forced given they rely on big leagues clubs (for funding).

“We’re in a different situation so the club has had time to work out what happens.

“It’s great they haven’t rushed into any decision.”

Members give cash-strapped clubs $37 million
    Dean Ritchie, The Daily Telegraph
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

With large parts of Australia suffering financial stress, the NRL expected some of its 285,000 club members to give up their packages for 2020. The figures have been surprising.

Just 200 of rugby league’s 285,000 members have sought refunds for 2020 – a gesture ensuring cash-strapped clubs can share in a vitally important $37 million.

Rugby league has given 112 years of enjoyment and passion to fans – now supporters are returning the favour during the game’s darkest moment.

Just 0.07 per cent of all NRL club members have asked for refunds – an extraordinary low number. Despite many facing financial hardship, members have taken back less than $5000 from all clubs.

Membership injects $37m into the clubs annually. South Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne secure $4m through membership packages with Parramatta and Newcastle bank around $3m.

Around a dozen Rabbitohs fans have actually contacted the club seeking to pay membership fees for 2021 and 2022. Incredibly, of their 19,039 members, just four Canberra fans have sought reimbursement.

Only 30 Souths fans want their money back from the club’s 28,413 members and just 35 from Brisbane’s 27,463 members. Thirty fans from Parramatta’s 27,104 members are seeking to recoup their money.

In isolation with Matty Johns. Don’t miss his latest podcast where Matt is joined by his wife Trish and his two rugby league-playing sons Cooper and Jack.

There have been less than ten at Wests Tigers – they all cited financial difficulties – and just 25 at Canterbury.

A Sydney Roosters spokesperson said: “We’ve had only 20 inquiries about refunds or pausing payment plans due to financial hardship. On a daily basis, members are getting in touch with the club to commit to their membership for 2020, even if the season is shortened or cancelled.”

The Roosters have even generated memberships from fans living overseas.

NRL club officials, led by Cronulla CEO Dino Mezzatesta, have been discussing membership uniformity through regular phone hook-ups, the most recent being Wednesday.

Clubs are aware the amount of refunds could increase if the season was totally abandoned but, for now, members are sticking solid under duress.

Souths sent their 10,000 ticketed members a pledge to support their club even if the competition is ditched for 2020.

The pledge reads: “No matter what happens in the 2020 season you will stick with us and maintain your 2020 membership. By pledging your membership fee, you will ensure that we are able to remain viable as we navigate this challenging period and retain our rightful position as ‘Pride of the League’ as we march towards premiership number 22 once football returns.”

Souths CEO Blake Solly said: “We had a thousand people pledge in the first hour, two thousand in the first day and over four thousand have pledged already. It went off the charts.”

Canberra pulls $1.9m a year through membership – and the club’s fans are remaining strong.

“In most other industries that don’t have our passion and loyalty, the customer would ask for a refund. But rugby league means more to them than just a transaction,” said Raiders CEO, Don Furner. “The members have been very, very supportive.

“If the competition does get cancelled then we will look at what we do but at the moment the members have all been really supportive. Less than a handful have asked for a refund.”

Passionate Manly Sea Eagles member Martyn Penny won’t be seeking a refund from his club, saying: “Our family always have and always will love Manly. This is a time when the club needs its fans and members. We won’t be deserting them. I won’t be seeking a membership refund but certainly understand those that do due to current hardships.”

Broncos CEO Paul White was impressed with his club’s supporters.

“We draw strength from the support of our members and the passion they share for the Broncos,” he said. “On behalf of everyone at our club, I would like to thank you, our members, for your ongoing support.”

I'm all for people supporting the club and not asking for a refund. I won't.

But it turns my stomach to see specific numbers being released about people asking for a refund. We have thousands of people out of work and people may need that money!

There is no need for specifics which to me add pressure on people and almost shames them for thinking about it. And perhaps that is the design of the effort.

Gee I don't want to be one of the 20 from the Roosters. 30 from the Rabbitohs. 35 from the Broncos. 30 from Parramatta. Less than 10 at Wests Tigers and 25 at Canterbury.

I'm glad I didn't read specific Titans numbers here. Only broad strokes are needed.

I appreciate the message of the article. But it's not necessary to go this far. It's tone deaf and ignorant. Because it's likely that many more people may actually have to ask for a refund.

Most of the years I've been a Titans member I've been living from pay check to pay check.

NRL and RLPA reach agreement on financial measures
    http://www.nrl.com

The National Rugby League (NRL) and the Rugby League Players' Association (RLPA) have reached agreement on financial measures which will be taken while the NRL Telstra Premiership is suspended due to the COVID-19 virus.

Following a meeting between NRL Chief Executive Todd Greenberg and RLPA CEO Clint Newton, the NRL and the RLPA have today agreed that a total of $24.6 million will be distributed to players.

The interim agreement was also approved today by the RLPA Board and endorsed by players.

The deal will see players earn two months wages and payments. Due to the suspension of the 2020 season, players will surrender five out of 12 months' salary if the competition is unable to resume.

Key features of the agreement include:

    - A total of $24.6 million in player payments secured, which includes $5.4 million from the liquidation of the Injury Hardship Fund
    - Players will receive a minimum of 29.5% of any additional net revenues over the revised forecast received by the NRL (based on the current format under the CBA)
    - The rules of the Retirement Account have been amended to allow players suffering financial hardship early access - with those wishing to do so guaranteed their full amount
    - The NRL will also resource the Wellbeing and Education program at each Club to ensure players have access to the relevant support
    - The RLPA will have agreement rights and involvement in any revisions to the salary cap and player benefits beyond this period
    - The RLPA will be included in key discussions - including with broadcasters and regarding the future competition structure and scheduling
    - The RLPA will conduct a special purpose audit to continue with the transparency of the game's current and future financial status
    - Existing playing contracts will otherwise remain protected

"This is a difficult time for our game and the wider community and the challenges we face are immense, and unprecedented," Mr Greenberg said.

"The players understand the severity of the circumstances we face and have demonstrated their willingness to work with us to secure the best possible outcome to protect the long-term future of our game.

"I know it hasn't been easy and I thank the RLPA and the playing group for their maturity, professionalism and diligence in helping us reach this solution."

RLPA CEO Clint Newton said: "The entire community has been impacted by these extraordinary and unexpected circumstances. Our great game and our people are feeling those effects.

"The Coronavirus pandemic has placed the game and its people under huge pressure and players have assumed the responsibility, like many others, to ensure the future of our Clubs and the NRL is protected.

"Players will share in this pain while games are suspended and have done what was required to ensure the game's short- and longer-term future. However, we want to be clear that this arrangement is based on the worst-case scenario, should we not get back on the field in 2020.

"Based on the current financial position of the game, the information we have been provided and the guarantees we have secured, we believe that this is a fair deal and we have secured the best outcomes for our members, while ensuring they are protected and included upfront in decision making long-term."

Mr Greenberg commended Mr Newton for his commitment to working with the NRL in reaching an agreement which is testament to the true partnership between their organisations.

"Clint has shown tremendous leadership throughout these discussions and it is only through collaboration and mutual trust that we have been able to complete this agreement in order to preserve the game's long term future."

Mr Newton also recognised the NRL and ARLC for their commitment to working through this difficult process in a timely and respectful manner.

"I would like to firstly commend our members for their patience and understanding over the past two weeks," Mr Newton said. "The sacrifices you have and will continue to make for the good of the game deserve to be applauded.

"Secondly, to the RLPA team and Board, thank you for your tireless work and support to get us to this point.

"Lastly, I would like to thank the ARLC and the NRL, particularly Peter V'landys and Todd Greenberg, for their transparency and commitment during these extremely challenging circumstances."
