Tweed Seagulls coach Ben Woolf says the Gold Coast players are not the only ones learning new skills under Titans Head Coach Justin Holbrook, with the men in charge of the feeder clubs also absorbing what they can in league’s new era on the Coast.

Woolf and Burleigh counterpart Rick Stone will spend two days a week working with the Titans’ coaching staff at Parkwood as part of a three-year extension to the affiliate agreement between the three parties.

Woolf said while there is no doubt his Seagulls players benefit from any time spent as part of the Titans’ NRL system, he himself was learning ways to develop his coaching with Tweed working with the Super League premiership-winner Holbrook.

“I think it has been really positive,” Woolf said of the Titans’ coaching change. “Any change is always good, you learn new things.

“I am definitely picking things up that I am taking back to our training sessions.

“That is obviously the plan – to have it as close as possible with what we are doing down there to here, so that it is an easy transition for players going in either direction.”

Woolf said the Seagulls were in good shape heading into the 2020 Intrust Super Cup Season, looking to improve on a solid 2019 where they finished sixth on the ladder, only to be bounced out in the first week of finals after dropping a 25-24 heartbreaker to Redcliffe.

“We are about four weeks in (pre-season), and we are really happy with how they’re going,” Woolf said.

“Our focus was on maintaining as much of our squad as we could, and we have done that. I think we have lost only two or three players from last year’s top 20.

“We have made good moves in the right direction in the last couple of years and we will be looking to build on that this year.”

Woolf said he was excited about the prospect of Titans players returning to Tweed if they missed out on the NRL squad, and lauded the professional approach of the players who were “sent back” to ISC this season.

“(Their attitude) has always been really good,” he said.

“That has been a focus since I have been at the club – just really making sure those guys are happy when they come back, and that the guys are keen and contributing when they are back there.

“The guys that we have had over the last two years have been really good in that area and we expect nothing to change there.”

Tweed sign former NRL & Super League outside back Fetuli Talanoa for Intrust Super Cup season
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

TWEED have added more than 200 games of top-grade experience to their Intrust Super Cup squad with the signing of former South Sydney and Hull outside back Fetuli Talanoa.

A 95-game Rabbitoh in the NRL before playing 126 matches for UK Super League club Hull, Talanoa returned to Australia late last season and made a single ISC appearance for Mackay in Round 22.

The 32-year-old winger or centre has now joined Tweed after approaching the club over the off-season and is a likely inclusion in the Seagulls side to face a young Gold Coast Titans team in Saturday’s trial match at Piggabeen Sports Complex.

The Seagulls have also recruited forwards Jesse Cronin (Parramatta), Jerry Key (North Sydney), Jamie Hill (CQ Capras) and Fabian Keary (Redcliffe), as well as halfback Blake Goodman (North Sydney) and outside back Ethan O’Neill (Sydney Roosters), the son of former Broncos and Australian fullback Julian O’Neill.

Coach Ben Woolf has welcomed back a host of players from the squad that reached last season’s ISC finals for the first time since 2014, with Titans-contracted players Treymain Spry and Ioane Seiuli joined by backline mainstays Talor Walters, Lindon McGrady, Rowland Jacobs, Luke Jurd and Lee Turner.

Captain John Palavi and fellow forwards Lamar Liolevave, Jarrod Morfett, Kody Parson, Rory Lillis and Brent Woolf have also returned to help cover the loss of Christian Hazard (Souths Logan), Jack Cook, Kirk Murphy (both France), Kalani Going (Canberra) and Cheyne Whitelaw (knee reconstruction).

“I think we will have good strength and depth again in our ISC squad and plenty of talent in our under-age sides and the women’s team, which improved so much during the course of last season,” Seagulls chief executive Paul Stephenson said.

“We’ve concentrated on bringing in some good young talent which we feel can develop into very good players at this level and to pick up someone like Fetuli, who approached us just wanting to continue playing after moving back from England, is a real bonus.”

Saturday’s 6.45pm battle with the Titans will follow three other trials, with the Seagulls’ under-18, under-20 and women’s teams to take on Northern Rivers/Titans representative sides.

Halfback Toby Sexton and back-rower Juwan Compain, who were key members of the Tweed Mal Meninga Cup side that won last year’s national under-18 title, are likely to line up for the Titans against the Seagulls on Saturday night.

Their former under-18 teammates Caleb Hodges, Ben Liyou and Carsil Vaikai appear set to play for Tweed’s ISC side.

The club fielded a women’s team for the first time last year, holding their own to finish sixth in the SEQ division 1 competition while helping Jessika Elliston (Queensland) and Tarryn Aiken (Australian Nines) gain representative honours.

    SATURDAY’S TRIAL SCHEDULE

    ■ 3pm – Tweed Under-18s vs. Northern Rivers-Titans Under-18s

    ■ 4.15pm – Tweed Women vs. Northern Rivers-Titans

    ■ 5.30pm - Tweed Under-20s vs. Northern Rivers-Titans Under-23s

    ■ 6.45pm - Tweed ISC vs. Gold Coast Titans

Tweed's Ben Woolf appointed Queensland U20s Origin coach
    by Brent O'Neill
    https://www.tweeddailynews.com.au/

TWEED coach Ben Woolf's reputation as one of Queensland rugby league's best young mentors has been underlined with his appointment as the Maroons' under-20s State of Origin coach.

Fresh off steering the Seagulls to their first Intrust Super Cup finals appearance since 2014, Woolf has been charged with moulding Queensland's elite under-20s for their curtain-raising clash with NSW before Origin 2 in Adelaide on June 3.

Among the players likely to be at his disposal are 2019 NRL debutants Tom Dearden, Xavier Coates (both Brisbane), Tanah Boyd (Gold Coast) and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (Melbourne), as well as Seagulls products Ioane Seiuli and Juwan Compain.

The Queensland squad and new coaching staff gathered for the first time for a short camp on the Sunshine Coast last weekend, with former Origin hardman Michael Crocker also involved as a mentor.

The camp focused predominantly on developing trust between players and staff, with Woolf setting benchmarks around the "effort areas" that are crucial in games at representative level.

"Michael Crocker was a great effort player himself and the message he gave them will be invaluable for them," Woolf said.

"This is a really good experience for me; it's the first time I have done any of the high-level rep stuff although I have done a lot of coaching in the (Intrust Super) Cup and 20s as well.

"I'm hoping to learn from the players as well and learn from the experience."

Woolf, the younger brother of Tonga and St Helens coach Kristian Woolf, spent four seasons as coach of the Titans' NYC side before taking over from Aaron Zimmerle at Tweed in 2018.

Zimmerle also coached the Queensland Residents team in 2015-16 during his time with the Seagulls.

Woolf's ISC players, including prized recruit Fetuli Talanoa, will have their first hitout of the season in a pre-season trial against a young Titans squad at Runaway Bay tomorrow.

The game, one of four featuring Tweed teams, was originally slated for Piggabeen Sports Complex but was moved because of consistent rain.

Outstanding as a junior in the NYC for Canberra mate but struggled last season for Redcliffe but at 190cm and 107kg with a mean streak he is worth keeping an eye on this season in the Queensland Cup.

Caleb Hodges debuted as an 18 year old scoring in just 6th minute from the right wing. He is contracted to the Titans until the end of 2021.
