Default Jim Dymock - Titans Assistant Coach

New Gold Cost Titans assistant coach Jim Dymock is ready to embrace his role as the "Minister of Defence" as he gets to work on improving that aspect of the game.

The Titans conceded 651 points in 2019, the most in the NRL. It was a major factor in their wooden spoon finish.

The Titans have let in fewer than 500 points in a season just four times in the club's 13-year history and in three of those seasons – 2009, 2010 and 2016 – reached the finals.

Massive improvements are needed and Dymock, who spent a decade at the Bulldogs and several seasons at the Sharks in a coaching capacity, is keen to play his role.

"It is not rocket science. Defence wins matches," Dymock told NRL.com.

"I think we have the strike power to definitely ruffle a few feathers but when you are trying to express yourself in attack you are going to come up with a few dropped balls and that is when you have to be able to defend your line.

"Last season they weren't good at it so that it is a big challenge.

"I am not here to go over what happened last season but my job is to make sure that the players all know their job and put systems in place so we have a safety net in place if something does go wrong so they are all accountable."

Dymock represented NSW and Australia and was a creative ball-playing lock and five-eighth for Western Suburbs, Canterbury and Parramatta.

It is the defensive ethos of Canterbury's 1995 premiership-winning side - which conceded just 28 points in four finals matches - that Dymock intends to instil into the Titans.

"I remember one season our attack was woeful but our defence was still good and we still scraped in [to the finals]. When you are on and your defence is humming you enjoy defending because you get an opportunity to inflict pain on the opposition," Dymock said.

"Then, when everyone is on the same page and on song, it is just beautiful."

Dymock will be working closely with the Titans forwards on both attack and defence. He is enthused by the calibre of player that he has to work with.

He said the Titans had the players to do the job with elite forwards Jai Arrow, Kevin Proctor and Ryan James on board and quality young stars such as 2019 player of the year Moeaki Fotuaika in the squad.

He also has a strong rapport with new Titans head coach Justin Holbrook who was on the coaching staff at the Bulldogs when Dymock was there.

"Justin impresses me because he doesn't over-complicate things. He is going to strip it all back and simplify things for the players so everyone knows what their job is so that no-one is second-guessing themselves,” Dymock said.

"He is really big on the individual knowing their job but he also knows how to make training enjoyable."

Garth Brennan has lifted the defensive bar for the Titans, with a new role for Trevor Gillmeister.
Trevor Gillmeister will up his involvement at the Gold Coast Titans this year as Garth Brennan looks to improve the leaky defence that cost the NRL club in his rookie season.

The former Queensland hard man made the odd appearance at Parkwood last year but will be a constant presence in 2019 as part of what is quickly becoming a star-studded staffing list.

Gillmeister, a former Brisbane premiership player and Titans assistant, had worked with the Maroons as a defensive specialist before being flicked last year as Kevin Walters put the broom through his staff.

Brennan has snapped him up though, tasking him to focus on first-up contact with a squad that leaked 582 points - the fourth-worst in the NRL - last year.

"It is true that our defence last year suffered at times," Brennan told NRL.com.

"A couple of one-on-one misses in defence was probably the difference between playing semi-final football and not because it cost us games.

"Gilly is another voice in the club and a well-respected guy who has a bit of clout in the game so he is someone I think the players can learn a lot from."

Gillmeister's appointment follows that of Australian coach Mal Meninga as head of performance and culture.

Brennan has also made changes to his physical performance team, while former Touch Football Australia boss Steve Mitchell took over from Graham Annesley as CEO in November when Annesley was head-hunted for a return to NRL headquarters.

This is what I thought of when I read that article too. It does get a bit tiresome reading all these fluff pieces every season. It's a bit frustrating because it's all we are getting at the moment as we have had no recruitment (or better still release statements) that we can focus on. But I guess it is what the media department gets paid to do, it's not their fault that our roster has been poorly managed.

Good point JB ... attitude is the key to defense, technique is for putting on lipstick.

Minister for Defence for us is not a portfolio I’d be wanting.

Good point JB. Like most things with the Titans.... wash, rinse, repeat.

Ummmm...do you guys think that a defensive coach teaches players how to tackle??

How do teams develop a good defensive attitude?

How does Dymock's coaching record compare next to Gilly's?

As a unit...how does our current coaching team compare to the one Brennan assembled?

We are over getting our hopes up. When the team perform up to expectations on the field, then we can look back on these fluff pieces.

Fair enough. I guess as the years add up, you start to lose touch with the younger generations.

I grew up in the Qld bush. Played plenty of footy...boxed a fair bit...and faced adversity at most turns as a younger bloke. Now, I run my own businesses and am starting to slow down a bit.

Along the way...I never lost (and I instilled into my kids) the old Aussie customs of standing up for yourself, standing up for your mates...standing up for those that need your help. Loving an underdog, sticking solid during the rough times.

How do you go into battle with a list of reasons running around in your head as to why you suck and are in for a flogging?

Above all else...you never give up before the fight has even begun!

I'm proud to be known as a Titans supporter and I will always find that silver lining.

I'm 48 and I hope there are some like me here. I'm not blind. I'm not ignorant to our problems. I'm not on the gear (lol, MT) I just can't get my head around the idea of constantly putting the boot into the club/team. Why "support" the club at all?? Save yourself some heartache and get on the roosters or storm.

A mate of mine finds it funny that I come on here so often. He reckons the place is full of trolls hiding in plain sight. I can't explain to him that people here are just sick of being let down. He's a tough old bastard and is also happy to tell all and sundry that he's a Titans man too.

Each to their own I guess. I hope I don't piss too many people off with my positivity. It's not my intention.

This is trolling. This is to prove a point. No one is trolling. We have differing views and different ways of expressing ourselves. In the same way you don't want to piss people off with your positivity, others intentions aren't to piss people off with their realistic expectations.

Go Meno, go! Being a Gold Coast rugby league supporter over many years takes a special breed and being a Titans one is even more vexing at times ... even so you're quite right.

And that JB, Ye Olde Troll, is a leading statement based on the assumption that "realistic expectations" = negativity ... or not but you're right too, as everyone is entitled to have their say without fear of favour ... and let's make one thing clear Meno at 48 that makes you a whippersnapper by a long long way

I reckon League of Titans is the most troll free social media I’ve encountered. It’s so good that the moderators rarely have to step in.
The Suns forum constantly has people getting sanctioned and don’t get me started on the comments section of NewsLtd papers such as the CM. That is one nasty and brutal beast.
