Default ‘Flash’ Gordon joins Coaching Staff

Michael Gordon’s rugby league retirement has been short-lived, with the former Gold Coast fullback appointed as the Titans’ Development Coach for the 2020 season.

Gordon announced his retirement earlier this year after 261 games in the NRL, but after a discussion with new Head Coach Justin Holbrook, the 36-year-old will return to the Club as part of the Titans’ new-look coaching staff.

Gordon will bring his enormous rugby league experience to assisting and coaching the ‘back five’, helping out the fullback, wingers and centres.

The other element to his role will be as a ‘transitional’ coach, helping the players who go back to play for – or are promoted from – the Burleigh Bears or Tweed Seagulls.

Titan Ryan James played with Gordon over the past two years and believes the Tweed Coast junior is the perfect man for the job.

“Flash has come on board and is doing a bit of work with the back five,” James said.

“It’s great that the Club has looked at him and is investing in him for the future because for someone to have played over 250 games, he must’ve done something right.

Gordon has known head coach Justin Holbrook for a number of years, and while James won’t work with his former teammates directly, he is excited about seeing him work with the younger squad members.

“Having Flash here to help the back five is extremely important,” James said.

“His job is to help players like that and to help the transitional players as well.

“He’s played all of those positions, and played in some great teams, so Flash can help in all those areas.”

“The Club has gone out and got what they wanted, and Flash is one of those people.

“It’s great because he’s a great person to have around the Club.”

Smart signing. His insight on reading the game will hopefully be soaked up by the back 5 each week.

Flash's ability to read the attack and position himself to defend was pretty good throughout his career. He was also good at picking his moments and chiming into the attacking line too.

Also his position aligns itself to what Cameron Smith said was lacking in having ex players around to provide input and experience. I wonder if Flash still get to play for his home town now ?

True. Being so fresh in retirement...most of the teams we play next year, he'll be able to give great advice (to AJ in particular) on how to defend and who/what to look out for.

We should look at bringing in retired players...for motivational talks with the team. Imagine someone like Bull Bailey having a chat with the forwards...maybe watching his highlight reel with the team...firing the forwards up during the week...telling them how good it feels to leave it all out there, week in week out...and the rewards you get from the effort. (Rep honours etc)

    That'd be great!

Like everyone has said a million times before it would be great to get back Prince, Rogers, Bailey and Presto to help in some form. Getting Flash is a start and hopefully pays dividends.

It’s a positive step but yeah I’d have gone Mat Rogers for that role in a perfect world. The guy is a footy genius.
