Hopelly it'll entice local kids to sign directly with us instead of going to the broncos. The thought that we were close to signing payne hass but he chose brisbane is devastating

We certainly have a number of talented mobile backrowers in our ranks now. I agree that Tino is the “big name” signing but I think that both Beau Fermor and Darius Farmer will surprise a lot of people this season and I am sure both will make their NRL debuts potentially sooner rather than later. Beau Fermor is recovering from an ACL so Darius Farmer may get the jump on him from an NRL debut perspective.

If Darius Farmer did not go through his health scare last year (and great to hear that he is totally past that now) I firmly believe that he would have made his NRL debut late last season. The young man is a class act both on and off the field.

Both Beau Fermor and Darius Farmer are big boys at 100kg plus but both are exceptional athletes and have above average to plus speed, including off the mark. I think that once they both break into the NRL side that both will stay there long term setting up a great situation for Justin Holbrook in 2021 when Tino arrives.

Man that is bloody so devastating. Was looking forward to seeing him back at his best this year but the poor guy can’t catch a break. I’m now a bit worried about our chances in 2020...

    That’s a huge understatement
We all saw how useless our forwards were last year after we lost him
    This is an unmitigated disaster

A bump in training! Just shows how at risk he would have been for the Indigenous game.
I just hope he can recover quickly, he must feel like ....

Players having ACL injuries are always a big risk for reoccurrence and season ending injuries. Thats why signing Fermor for 3 years is such a huge risk in my opinion

Arrow little hope of shooting through after James' shattering injury
    https://www.theage.com.au/

South Sydney’s hopes of prising Jai Arrow out of the Gold Coast early have been dashed by Ryan James’ latest injury, leaving the Rabbitohs with limited depth up front ahead of their premiership campaign.

And in an intriguing twist, the Titans are trying to lure Souths prop Liam Knight to the glitter strip with a lucrative three-year deal.

The luckless James has suffered a suspected ACL rupture, which would be the third of his career. Given he will turn 29 this year and he just reinjured the knee that ended his 2019 season prematurely, there are fears the setback could be career-ending.

The Rabbitohs had been holding out hope that Titans forward Arrow, who has already signed a four-year deal with them beginning in 2021, would be granted an immediate release. The Pride of the League had even offered up an outside back as part of a player swap in bid to get the deal done.

However, the Titans can ill afford to offload Arrow now that James is facing a long stint on the sidelines.

“We’re down with troops in the middle with Ryan going,” said the Gold Coast’s head of performance and culture, Mal Meninga, on Saturday.

“It will take a fair effort to get Jai Arrow out of our club this year. He’s probably our best middle player. At this stage, losing Jai, with Ryan going down, it’s highly unlikely we will release him.”

The loss of Sam Burgess, John Sutton, George Burgess and Dean Britt has left Souths skinny in the engine room. They are also in a battle to retain one of their best props, Knight, who has an offer on the table from the Titans. Knight is off contract at the end of the season.

NRL player Tyrone May has been placed on a three-year good behaviour bond and ordered to complete 300 hours of community service after filming sexual acts without consent.

South Sydney are also one of the suitors for St Helens’ Luke Thompson, although the English international is leaning towards staying put.

Souths coach Wayne Bennett will likely have at least one big body joining the club in Shaquai Mitchell, the brother of superstar signing Latrell. Mitchell has joined Souths despite having signed a contract with Blacktown Workers, although Manly’s feeder team won’t stand in the way of him joining his brother.

However, Shaquai doesn’t have the form or fitness required to become a realistic contender for NRL selection this season after taking a sabbatical from the game.

James' injury leaves the Gold Coast down a quality player and also raises questions about who will replace him as captain. Meninga said the likes of Tyrone Roberts, Kevin Proctor, Nathan Peats and Kallum Watkins were among the potential replacements, although he wouldn’t rule out Arrow despite his looming departure.

Asked if the Maroons forward could wear the skipper’s armband, Meninga said: “That’s a good question and something we would have to consider, of course.

“A guy like Jai, regardless of whether he’s going to another club next year, he is going to give 100 per cent to our club.

“We know the character of the person and how much he loves the club, how much pride he has in his own performance whether he has the captaincy or regardless of where he’s going next year. He will give his best.

“Ryan will be around, he will play some role in a leadership capacity around our club.

“Jai is obviously up there as well. We haven’t made those decisions, it’s pretty raw.

“We haven’t got a leadership group to be honest with you. We haven’t got a lot of experienced players and we’re trying to breed leaders at the club, to give everyone an opportunity to lead in some form.

“Jai is important in that but there are other more experienced players at the club that we can turn to as well.”

Liam Knight seems to have had a very unsettled career so far?

Yeah and only really one good season. I do like the fact that we seem to identifying players that we like though and are able to communicate with them without all the media finding out though. Apart from L Mitchell (who I don't actually think we ever really wanted), our recent negotiations with Tino, Fermor and Pearson have all been conducted without the media finding out.

Im loving the fact that we are targeting younger players. Hopefully we can build a strong club and culture where they will want to stay together
