The Gold Coast have opened contract talks with veteran back-rower Kevin Proctor as NRL and Super League rivals circle the New Zealand Test star.

Proctor is off-contract at season’s end and has attracted interest from two English outfits plus a Sydney-based NRL club, putting pressure on the embattled Titans to retain one of the club’s most accomplished campaigners.

But Proctor’s preference is to remain at the Titans and he hopes a fresh round of negotiations involving culture boss Mal Meninga and recruitment chief Ezra Howe will deliver the deal that sees him finish his career on the Coast.

The Titans were rocked by Queensland Origin ironman Jai Arrow’s decision to sign with South Sydney over Christmas, and new coach Justin Holbrook can ill-afford to lose another big-name representative forward.

Proctor turns 31 later this month and has rocketed back into the frame for the Titans captaincy following the heartbreak of a season-ending knee injury to incumbent skipper Ryan James.

Proctor’s management confirmed the offshore poaching raid but said the veteran of 22 Tests for the Kiwis wants to stay loyal and finish his career in the region where he became a schoolboy sensation at Palm Beach Currumbin.

“Kevin is a leader among the group and has informed me he would like to stay with the Gold Coast and help bring success to his hometown,” said Chris Orr of PSM.

“ ‘KP’ is still performing to a high level. He represented the Kiwis last year, so he knows he has to lead by example this season.”

The fuzzy-haired Proctor has played 61 games in three years for the Titans and has largely struggled to exhibit the form that made him a premiership-winning forward weapon in nine fine seasons at Melbourne.

But with 240 NRL games under his belt, Proctor brings experience and defensive toughness to a Titans side that has leaked a whopping 1233 points in the past two seasons.

One of the Titans’ highest-paid players, Proctor faces a pay cut to remain at the Coast in his twilight years, but is prepared to take a financial hit to help rookie coach Holbrook offload the wooden spoon.

“I feel really refreshed under Justin and his coaching team and I’m really looking forward to the season ahead,” he said.

“It’s been a tough few years but there are some really good signs among the team. We are training harder and our training efforts are much higher, which makes me confident.

“I am keen to stay and help the club become a competitive force within the NRL, so hopefully my agent and the Titans can work something out.”
And this is why I just cant buy into this idea that things are changing. Why in the absolute **** would you re-sign Proctor. The bloke has not lived up to his current contract since he arrived. He never breaks tackles, never offloads and is just the same one dimensional player. Unless we are paying him peanuts then let him go!

Proctor is not apart of our future. If the peanuts in the front office actually think he is worth signing then I have ****ing seen it all. Honestly when will this club learn. When will we make smart signing decisions. Again im not re-upping my membership with the club until we show some brains for once

Thanks mate. Just to clarify, did we sign him after we signed Clark and GL to full time contracts? ie. did he take one of their train and trial spots? And if thats the case, who took the other spot? The club isn't very good at communicating these sort of details to the fans.

There is a Courier-Mail.com.au article stating that Proctor will be named Titans Captain. I can't read the article but I am concerned if that is true.

Gold Coast Titans set to name Kevin Proctor as new captain

Kevin Proctor is on the verge of being crowned captain of the Gold Coast Titans in what would cap a story of redemption for the New Zealand international.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Proctor is the favourite to replace Ryan James as Gold Coast skipper in 2020.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook will finalise his leadership model in the next fortnight and Proctor is expected to take on a role, potentially as a co-captain.

The Titans’ captain for the past three years, James will relinquish the duties as he faces a third knee reconstruction which has ruled him out for the entire 2020 season.

Proctor, 30, briefly co-captained the Titans with James in 2017 before being stripped of the role following a drugs scandal while on Test duties.

The 240-game NRL veteran has captained the Titans at times since without officially taking on the role full-time.

Holbrook was tight-lipped when asked about the captaincy, but said he wanted to re-sign the off-contract Proctor and praised his leadership.

“We love having Kev here at the club, he’s a great leader of our group,’” he said.

“We want to keep him for 2021, that’s for sure. We just haven’t got around to the details at this stage.

“We’re having some meetings around (the captaincy) now so I’m not in a hurry for that.

“It will definitely be (announced) before our trial against the Broncos (on February 29). We’ll have it worked out over the next couple of weeks.”

Proctor emerged as the Gold Coast’s best captaincy contender following James’ injury late last month.

Queensland Origin forward Jai Arrow was earmarked to be a future leader of the club but he is South Sydney-bound in 2021.

Halfback Ash Taylor is coming off a tough 2019 campaign where he took a break from the game for personal reasons and youngsters Moeaki Fotuaika and AJ Brimson are in the infancy of their careers.

Former Origin players Jarrod Wallace and Nathan Peats are other potential leadership options.

Holbrook was contemplating shaking up the captaincy before James’ injury and Proctor told The Courier-Mail last month he was keen to take on the duties again.

“It’s always a massive honour to lead your boys around and be named captain of a club,” he said.

“I haven’t given it too much thought. I’m trying to go about doing my thing and leading by example at training. If that comes it comes, I’ll be happy to take it.”

Personally I think we should go with co captains of peats and Wallace or proctor, peats won't be on the field for 80 and while proctor probably is a natural leader he should be under pressure to earn his next contract

Peats isn't even going to start in our 17 by the sounds of it so can't see him being captain.

I do think Proctor is the logical choice, but I would maybe go either Wallace as co captain or hell even make AJ vice captain to prepare him for the future.

Slim pickings on the captain front. Perhaps they share it around from week to week like under 10s. Proctor has stepped up, Peats says they need to step up but doesn't. Wallace is here for the long haul but not on the field long enough. If Taylor wasn't a head case then he should have it. Peachey doesn't deserve it. I don't view Cartwright as a Titan. Arrow made his bed. AJ too young and still learning. Can you vote "none of the above". Sad, if Proctor gets it which is very likely I just hope it doesn't mean the club will try and keep him after this season.

The Coke thing for me as well. Terrible message. I know my wife for example would be absolutely appalled.

Hooker Mitch Rein taking nothing for granted in battle with Nathan Peats, despite being named Titans NRL Nines captain
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

GOLD Coast NRL Nines captain Mitch Rein is taking nothing for granted in his ongoing battle with Nathan Peats for the Titans’ no.9, insisting his elevation to the top leadership position will count for little come Round 1.

The only specialist hooker named in the Titans’ Nines squad on Monday, Rein was today unveiled as skipper for the two-day tournament in Perth this weekend.

His two seasons on the Gold Coast have featured an intriguing head-to-head with Peats to be the club’s first-choice dummy half and the 29-year-old said he was expecting a similar fight in 2020, despite his captaincy call-up.

“This is the Nines so it’s a completely different tournament for us and for every other side. It’s a completely different game to 13-a-side so you can’t really take too much out of it,” Rein said.

“(Peats and I) are just training away at the moment and trying to put our best foot forward. We’re both getting time in there (at dummy half) so we’ll just see how we go.

“When it gets to Round 1 or throughout the year you never know what’s going to happen so I’m just doing everything I can to give myself that chance. I’m looking forward to (the Nines), it should be good.

“I played the first year (with the Dragons in 2015) so it was a while ago now. It’s definitely a different style of footy with a bit more space and it favours the speed guys.

“We’ve had a few (training) sessions and it’s been going good. It is a bit of fun but everyone goes over to do their best and have a crack and we’ll be no different.”

A nine-season, 180-game NRL veteran across stints at St George-Illawarra, Penrith and Gold Coast, Rein is the second-most experienced player in the Titans’ 18-man Nines squad, behind only returning retiree Michael Gordon (261 games).

He will line up alongside six players - Jonus Pearson, Jaimin Joliffe, Greg Leleisiuao, Treymain Spry, Erin Clark and Darius Farmer - who are yet to wear Titans colours and said it would be a special moment in his career.

“It’s going to be the first time a few of those guys have pulled on the jersey and it’s something they’re really excited about so to share that moment with them will be good,” he said.

“It’s just going to be good getting out there (for the) first hitout of the year, especially with all the young guys. All the guys are really looking forward to it.”

The Titans yesterday announced emoney as a major sponsorship partner for 2020, with players to wear shorts featuring the logo of the national non-bank lender for the first time at this weekend’s Nines.

KP can sod off. Not just from the captaincy but from the team. He offers nothing. At least when Zillman was made captain you knew he was always giving his best, as good as it was.
