We may have paid three or four months of his salary for this year so we don't have the $450K to spend. It would be more around the $300-350K mark

    Why Leilani Latu chose Warrington
    https://www.loverugbyleague.com/

Warrington’s new prop Leilani Latu says he just couldn’t turn down the opportunity to link up with the club.

The 26-year-old has joined the Wolves on a two-year deal from NRL side Gold Coast Titans, where he played nine games last season.

Latu said: “I’m looking forward to getting into training with the boys and creating some combinations with them.

“It’s an exciting brand of footy here and I couldn’t turn down the opportunity.

“I chose Warrington because of the quality of players and I have played with a couple of them back in the NRL too; Ben Murdoch-Masila and Sitaleki Akauola at Penrith and we had some success there.”

Brenko Lee joins Melbourne Storm after Gold Coast release
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

Gold Coast reject Brenko Lee has resurrected his NRL career after signing with premiership powerhouse Melbourne Storm.

Lee has inked a one-year contract with the Storm after flirting with the idea of switching to rugby union.

Lee, 24, played 20 NRL games over the past two years with the Gold Coast Titans, but was not offered a new deal when coach Justin Holbrook took over the club.

He entertained the idea of switching to Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels before securing a contract with the Easts Tigers in the Intrust Super Cup.

The Tigers are an affiliate club of the Storm and Lee has been offered an NRL lifeline by Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy.

Like ex-Titans halfback Ryley Jacks, Lee has moved from the club that finished last in 2019 to the minor premiers.

An outside back, Lee has been involved in Queensland Emerging Origin camps, but only managed six NRL appearances last year as the Titans headed for the wooden spoon under coach Garth Brennan.

The 53-game NRL journeyman will attempt to resurrect his career under the incredibly-successful Bellamy at the Storm.

Bellamy has a track record of extracting every bit of talent out of players and needs backline depth following the departure of star centres Curtis Scott (Canberra) and Will Chambers (Japanese rugby).

The Titans further freed up salary cap space by releasing prop Leilani Latu to English Super League club Warrington.

Latu, 26, was a disastrous signing for the Titans, arriving at the Gold Coast from Penrith, Brennan’s former club, on a deal worth $450,000-a-season in 2018.

He managed only nine NRL appearances in two seasons due to poor form and injuries, spending much of his time in the Intrust Super Cup.

The Titans were desperate to offload Latu and finally managed to do it.

“Leilani and his family have been passionate members of the Gold Coast community, and as a club, we are supportive of him taking this new opportunity for his career and family,” Titans performance chief Mal Meninga said.

“The Titans thank Leilani for his time at the club, and wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

The Titans have been open to offloading former Panthers players Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey, but have had little interest in the duo.

'Improved' Watkins pushing for starting berth: Holbrook
    https://www.nrl.com/

Kallum Watkins is relishing his longest pre-season in almost a decade and Titans coach Justin Holbrook is banking on the England international regaining his 2017 World Cup form.

The 28-year-old centre played more than 250 games for Leeds and was a regular England international since 2013 before rupturing his ACL in 2018.

He joined the Titans during the 2019 season but was below his best in six NRL games.

Watkins was a regular visitor to a Gold Coast gym in the off-season to do his own personal training as he prepared himself for three months of hard training with the Titans squad.

"Kal is going really well. He has had a 12-year career in England for Leeds and for five of those years he was playing Test football for England at the end of the year and only had about four weeks of pre-season," Holbrook told NRL.com.

"I coached against him [for St Helens] and he was one of Leeds' best players but he struggled in Super League last year after coming back from his knee injury probably earlier than he should have and he was the first to admit he wasn't in a great state to play fitness-wise at the back end of the year.

"Since then he's had the luxury of having a full pre-season of training at the Titans and he has taken full advantage of the seven weeks we had before Christmas and we'll get another six weeks in before we start playing.

"He looks set for a good year after training really hard to give himself the best shot over here."

Watkins won three Super League grand finals, two Challenge Cup finals and a World Club Challenge title with Leeds and has played in two World Cup campaigns for England.

He was one of England's best in the 6-0 loss to Australia in the 2017 World Cup final.

The Titans are light on for players with finals and big-game experience in the backline and that is why Watkins is central to Holbrook’s plans.

Holbrook said he had a few options in the centres with Brian Kelly, Tyrone Peachey and Dale Copley in contention.

"Dale is travelling well after coming back from a shoulder injury and is nearly completely into full training. He's been in rehab for most of the pre-season but he’s working hard to be right for the start of the year," Holbrook said.

The only thing that sucks is having the same options as last year.. kelly I’m happy with, but the other centre options sound like the same crap.. how’s spry going? Wasn’t he meant to be the next GI?

We have Sami as well. But considering Copley seems like a bad idea considering he plays one game has 6 off.

For the moment I'd be happy to give Watlkins another crack at that spot. He was pretty damn terrible at the end of last year but after a full pre season and some NRL experience he should be better this year. If it doesn't work out though, Spry surely has to get a run. We know now that Copley isn't a centre. His defence just isn't up to it. Same goes with Peachey. I guess the other option is Sami but he seems to have a wing spot locked up.

I really believe that Watkins will get the first crack.
He was way below par last season, but remember he has recently been first choice for England centre.
My guess is he will be more than just another average centre.

I also like Watkins but the limited space he’ll get in NRL is a different task compared to ESL.

Five Queensland State of Origin hopefuls for 2020

    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

    JONUS PEARSON, GOLD COAST TITANS

QUEENSLAND great Billy Moore believes Jonus Pearson can become a household name this season if he makes the most of his move to the Gold Coast Titans.

The Yeppoon product signed with the Titans on a two-year deal following stints at St George and the Broncos.

He admitted it was a “fresh start” having moved back home to Queensland to be closer to his family and is aiming to be in the starting 13.

Moore said it was a smart move on his behalf as he would get more opportunity with the Titans to become a standout NRL star.

“Going to the Titans will be a good move for him,” Moore said.

“Can he add something to the Titans, I think he can. He adds depth to their outside backs.

“The real key question for Jonus, is that he’s at this point of his career, at a crossroads, where he has to ask do I just want to be an average, run-of-the-mill who had a crack at first grade? Or become more of a household name.

“This is the crossroads year for him.”

NRL analyst Ben Ikin agreed that for Pearson, and the other Queensland players who have had a change of scenery in 2020, this would be a make-or-break year.

“The ball is well and truly in their court for this opportunity,” Ikin said.

“If they get through this phase and don’t fully arrive, they might struggle to get their next contract in the NRL.”

Boom young backrower Beau Fermor has quit the Knights with the club reluctantly granting him a release to join the Gold Coast Titans on a three year deal.

Regarded as one of the club's rising stars, Fermor is yet to make his NRL debut but was expected to be pushing for selection this season after being promoted into the Knights' top 30 roster at the end of 2019.

But in a shock move, the 21-year-old approached coach Adam O'Brien and asked to be released from the final year of his contract because of a greater opportunity and pathway at the Titans and to be closer to family in Queensland.

It's understood the Titans deal is worth around double the money he would have earned at the Knights if he stayed. But family was also a major consideration in his decision to seek a release.

"He's got a three year deal at the Titans for considerably more money than he is on here but the big thing for Beau and his partner was the chance to move back closer to family," O'Brien told the Newcastle Herald.

"He's a great young guy with plenty of up-side as a footballer who we obviously wanted to keep here. But when he comes in and tells you he wants to go up there because they are both missing family and he's got the added security of a three year contract at the Titans, I'm not someone who is going to stand in his way."

Fermor has been at the Knights for the past two seasons after the club lured him away from the Melbourne Storm.

In his first season in Newcastle in 2018, he was the NSWRL and Knights Jersey Flegg player of the year and featured in a Queensland Origin Under 20's side that defeated the NSW Blues.

He earned an NRL development contract for 2019 and was among the club's best in the NSW Cup competition before he ruptured his ACL towards the back end of last season, robbing him of his chance to make his NRL debut.

He is almost fully recovered following a knee reconstruction and was expected to push the likes of Sione Mata'utia, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Aidan Guerra and Mitch Barnett for a spot in the backrow in 2020.

Ironically, he is the second Newcastle backrower to link with the Gold Coast in the space of seven months with Sam Stone signing a Titans deal prior to June 30 last year after being released.

Fermor's sudden departure leaves the club with three spots open in their senior roster.

Hooker Danny Levi's move to Manly last week created a new vacancy but that was quickly filled by the promotion of young forward Jirah Momoisea. Momoisea has re-signed with the club for a further two seasons.

Two of the three remaining positions must be filled before the season kicks off on March 14 but the final spot can be kept open until June 30.

The Knights have confirmed their final trial game before the season kicks off will be against defending premiers Sydney Roosters at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday, February 29.

Tickets went on sale to members on Tuesday with the general public able to purchase them from Ticketek from 1 pm Wednesday or at the ground on the day. The clubs will meet in three grades with the NRL clash to kick off at 7 pm.

The Roosters will take on St Helens in the World Club Challenge in England on February 22 but most of their stars are tipped to back up in the trial a week later.
