Garth Brennan committed to reigniting Bryce Cartwright’s career

TITANS coach Garth Brennan has committed to turning around Bryce Cartwright as the fallen star attempts to reignite his career on the Gold Coast.

Cartwright will report for pre-season training on Monday in the first step towards getting his career back on track following a disastrous 2018.

The former Penrith Panthers star’s $2 million move to the Gold Coast earlier this year ended in Cartwright being dumped to reserve grade following a string of weak performances.

Cartwright’s limp defensive efforts were heavily criticised and Brennan had no option but to relegate his blue-chip signing to the Intrust Super Cup for the second half of the season.

Cartwright was linked with a Gold Coast exit, but few clubs were willing to take a punt on the 23-year-old after his efforts in 2018.

Instead, Cartwright has been part of a group of Titans players training together during the off-season and finished second in a 2km time trial this week.

Brennan will assemble his squad on Monday to begin their 2019 preparations and the second-year coach said he was committed to helping Cartwright get back to his best.

“I am (committed to him) but that’s for every player in our club,” Brennan said.

“My job is to make them the best player they possibly can.

“I want them to be here and perform for the club. That hasn’t changed.

“I’ve heard he is in really good shape and has trained really hard.

“I haven’t spoken to Bryce. I leave my players alone during the break, I don’t want to pester them.

“From all reports he’s in really good shape and has done a few training sessions with one of our strength and conditioners and they said he was flying and more than meeting the targets they’d set for the players.

“That’s pleasing to hear he’s focused and ready to rip in.”

The Titans on Friday announced betting agency Neds would become their major sponsor for the next three years in what is a major financial boost for the club.

Cartwright is contracted to the Titans until 2021 and captain Ryan James said the NSW Origin hopeful would benefit from having an entire pre-season with his teammates.

“He came to us with one or two weeks before the trials this year and people expected him to fit straight in,” James said.

“It takes a whole pre-season to fit into someone’s structures. It takes time for players to gel and click.

“He was throwing flick balls and no-one had trained with him.

“People were expecting him to do those miraculous things but we need to get a full pre-season in and play a lot of trials together.”

Canberra recruit Shannon Boyd will meet his new Titans teammates for the first time on Monday.

Preseason training starts today. Not sure what's happening with the radio broadcasting rights for the Titans but there seems to be a lot of exclusive coach talk and players on SeaFM. Not sure what's happening with Hot Tomato this year

Wouldn't it be great if the club added more information in regards to who took part in the pre-season photos.

Way off topic but are any of you gentlemen disturbed by the amount of charges laid against NRL players for various atrocities against women in the last few weeks??

Yes....but wait and see who gets found guilty. Dylan Walker gets done for DV yet in court a few days later he is arm in arm with the person he is alleged to have assaulted. We have seen this before, and for the life of me I cannot understand why women do this. No one deserves to cop that (alleged at this stage but there were witnesses).

DeBelin has supposedly strongly protested his innocence. I think it's more a case of why do blokes put themselves in these positions in the first place. Obviously grog is usually involved, on both sides, and in the case of Brett Stewart it was clearly proven the women's father was a crook and had fraud charges against him in the past. Whenever I see these types of incidents I think of Stewart and would rather wait until the law takes it's course. If there is no doubt however, throw them out of the game.

Yep, way off thread Bods but I was doing nothing else.

    Thanks MT
I was just reading this version of events from the teenage girls point of view

“Jack de Belin was this week charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in Wollongong.

The woman claims she was outside a night club and was unable to order an Uber.

Along with 27-year-old de Belin and a second man, the woman took a taxi, which she understood would be going to another nightclub.

Instead, the taxi took them to a unit at 1:30am, where both men said they needed to get changed.

She asked to use the bathroom, and as she came out, the woman says she was assaulted.

De Belin’s partner is 20 weeks pregnant with their first child.”

It sickens me as I can see how that could happen to any young woman really. Her crime would be believing them when they said they were going to another nightclub when technology failed her.
And then there’s Walker-where i simply agree with everything you said. Why do they go back to these blokes? Imagine being her father, uncle or brother.

Players should have a substantial bond struck when they launch their careers which is forfeit if they step out of line ... plus the law of course.

As for the media? Crucifiction or “just doing my job”? We live in strange times.

That's a good idea. And lays down gravity of the situation from the start.

Seven Gold Coast Titans players who will be wishing for a big 2019 NRL season to help careers
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

A BIG season awaits the Gold Coast Titans as hope grows that the pieces are falling into place for a run at prolonged NRL success.

After stumbling to bottom three placings for the past two years, there is pressure to ensure their raft of on-field and off-field signings translate into results.

Beneath the team storyline, there are a number of players who must produce the goods in 2019 – because their careers are counting on it.

    BRYCE CARTWRIGHT

No surprises here. It’s been a rough couple of years for the talented former Panther, both on and off the field.

There is zero doubt about the 24-year-old’s ability as an attacking weapon but his first year in Titans colours proved a disaster, with one particular non-tackle drawing criticism about his dedication before he was dropped to reserve grade.

Coach Garth Brennan has spoken enthusiastically about Cartwright’s stellar efforts already this pre-season; hopefully it’s a sign that his best footy is not too far away.

    ASH TAYLOR

It might seem strange to put the club’s million-dollar marquee man, who is under lock and key for another three years, on this list.

However, the halfback had a season to forget in 2018 as his golden touch seemed to abandon him.

Taylor has a freakish knack, especially with his kicking game, and must rediscover top gear to not only prove he can be the No.1 man pulling the strings for Gold Coast but also bring his name back into representative contention.

    SHANNON BOYD

A day after meeting with Brennan about the four-year deal he later inked to join the Titans, Boyd ran riot against his future teammates to lead Canberra to a Round 9 victory in May.

But the 122kg prop has summed up the situation perfectly: “I need to be playing like that every game, not just one here or there.”

The Titans somewhat have a history of big-name recruits not quite working out but with Boyd determined to start afresh and put himself back on the representative map, here’s hoping he becomes a dominant force in Gold Coast colours.

    RYLEY JACKS

Jacks broke through at Melbourne to play 25 games across the past two seasons but on neither occasion won selection for the club’s charge through the play-offs.

The playmaker has said he could have stayed at the Storm but came to the Titans to establish himself as a first grader, sparking a likely showdown with Tyrone Roberts for the No.6 jersey.

Interestingly, he only signed a one-year deal. If he can have a career-best season, a rich contract may follow; if he spends much of the year in the Intrust Super Cup, it could spell trouble.

    KEEGAN HIPGRAVE

Hipgrave is a through-and-through Gold Coast product who for years has been spoken about in the Greg Bird aggressor mould.

Many love the fireworks he brings to the table but Hipgrave’s 2018 season will be remembered more for negatives, such as when he was twice sin-binned in Round 14 against the Rabbitohs, than positives.

The 21-year-old is likely to get first crack at an NRL spot in the New Year but with improved forwards depth at the Titans, he must learn to channel his aggression in a productive way.

    LEILANI LATU

“You talk to any other club and I’m sure they would all be interested in Leilani Latu but he has chosen the Gold Coast. I think that is a real sign of where the Titans are heading.”

Garth Brennan was over the moon when skilful front-rower Latu agreed to join from Penrith last off-season but things have not quite worked out thus far.

Latu was dropped just three games into his Titans career and only returned for three late-season bench appearances.

    WILL MATTHEWS

A defensive specialist, Matthews last season returned to the club that he made his NRL debut for 10 years earlier and ended up playing 15 matches.

On the surface, that figure may seem reasonable but the reality is Matthews struggled with injuries that both cut short his playing time on game days and often prevented him from playing in back-to-back weeks.

The Kyogle junior is still only 30 years of age but could desperately do with a good run of health this year.

6/7 ain’t too shabby but the other won’t see an NRL jersey if we are to challenge for a finals berth.

    Will Mathews defensive specialist
Ha ha ha ha oh please stop it
When we played Penrith this year Matthews was brought on the field as a Fresh Interchange with us leading 16-6 with Just 6mins left to close the game out. I think due to a HIA.
Approx 10mins later he walked off with us having lost 17-16.
    Defensive specialist my bum

He’s not even close to NRL Standard
