The arrival of the Dolphins – who make their NRL debut with a Sunday afternoon Suncorp Stadium showdown against the Roosters this weekend – will deliver an extra seven games of action for the famous Caxton Street precinct throughout the season.

It has the area’s traders popping the champagne corks, and the beer kegs, and the spirit bottles, with the Dolphins set to bring an extra 200,000 fans into the bars, restaurants and clubs surrounding the hallowed sporting cathedral over the course of the year.

On top of games featuring the Broncos, rugby’s Reds, State of Origin and Magic Round, Caxton Street will become Australia’s unofficial sports entertainment capital with matches virtually every weekend for the next six months.

On the back of hallowed Suncorp turf being relaid following a trio of Ed Sheeran concerts, it is all systems go for this weekend’s historic match, with bars and restaurants putting on extra staff and extended opening hours to cater for the 30,000-plus footy fans expected to move through the precinct.

Caxton Street Development Association President Sarosh Mehta said the arrival of the Dolphins would be a huge boost for the local economy.

“It’s happy days for us, it’s a real free kick,” he said.

“We’re the gateway to Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium) so we’re delighted to see another reason for people to come to the area.

“It’s an absolute winner for not just Caxton Street, but the whole precinct.”

Donny Gambaro from Brisbane institution the Gambaro Hotel said while the Dolphins were still “an unknown quantity”, the club would be welcomed to Caxton Street with open arms.

“The more the merrier,” he said.

“It’s exciting to have extra people in the precinct.

“It’s still a bit of the great unknown, but we’re opening for lunch this Sunday when we normally wouldn’t.

“Game days generally double normal business, so we’ll see what happens.”

After the history-making debut game on Sunday, the Dolphins are back at Suncorp on March 24 for a blockbuster Brisbane derby against the Broncos.

The Dolphins will also play three home games at Redcliffe’s Kayo Stadium, one on the Sunshine Coast and one in Perth.
