I’m happy if the club is using it as leverage to get something from the NRL to shut up. The politics of the game need to be used to our advantage.

    I agree with that JB.

    I said this in May.

Just let's imagine if the Dolphins get in. They'll have two reasons to hate us. At the end of the day, that's some good spice for rivalries.

I wonder if there will be an announcement at the Grand Final in Brisbane... Seems like a great opportunity to super charge the club's entry.

Actually have to credit the Broncos for welcoming competition. I do believe it will be good for them. Yes when the Broncos entered the comp and when they won those back-to-back titles in 92-93 Brisbane was Broncos mad. But then Super League happened and at the same time it just became accepted that you followed the Broncos. There was no reason to wear merchandise or slap on a bumper sticker. With a new club there would be. To get that polo shirt and coffee mug.

I am still perplexed as to how Perth hasn’t got a place. To be honest I’d prefer to relocate two Sydney clubs and stay at 16 (Perth Sharks and Brisbane Tigers) or if they don’t want to take that, disband the competition and reassemble it in a better geographical model.

It’s very strange to me as well. Everywhere the media keeps saying that we need to protect against the afl. Well if we are worried about the afl we should do what they are doing! That’s expand the game and make it a national game. If we want new fans that means we need to go to new areas. North Island NZ would be great because they have so much playing talent left over from rugby and would be new fans and perth. If we look at the game in 20-30 years that’s what we wish we had of done. News limited and nine don’t care about the long term game and all they want is more instant viewers, which is more teams in SEQ. If you don’t like league and you live in SEQ that’s because you don’t like the game.

    WHAT’S IN A NAME
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/

The Dolphins franchise are the team to beat for the 17th NRL team and, if successful, will attempt to cast their net much wider than their home city of Redcliffe.

In fact Redcliffe, while being their home base, would not appear anywhere in their name.

Modern trends dictate that non-animal names like the Storm, Heat, Power etc are preferable but the dolphin will be retained in the name somewhere as research has shown, from ages seven to 70, who doesn’t love a dolphin?

The Dolphins would play the majority of their games at Suncorp Stadium with others shared between Redcliffe and the Sunshine Coast.

Apparently one of the names the Dolphins are considering is "Sun State Dolphins". Not sure how I feel about that.

On the other hand the NRL may insist on the name Brisbane in the name.

I think if they are successful they would be commonly "The Dolphins".

I know it’s traditional etc but it’s a pity to have another NFL name.

Brisbane Firehawks pledge not to pillage Broncos and Titans
    https://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/

The Brisbane Firehawks have attempted to assuage the expansion concerns of the Broncos and Gold Coast Titans by vowing not to poach their players, staff and sponsors during their first two years of existence.

Firehawks bid chief Shane Richardson also wants the chance to stand in front of the existing clubs and state his bid’s case as he looks to strengthen their claims on the 17th licence.

The ARL Commission is expected to take another step towards expansion later this week when they hold a meeting to discuss the latest developments in the 17th team saga.

The Firehawks are locked in an arm wrestle with the Dolphins and Brisbane Jets to win favour from the ARL Commission and Richardson has sought to address the concerns of the Broncos and Titans by outlining plans to steer clear of both clubs as they build a new franchise from the ground up.

It is understood the Firehawks have informed NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo of their plans to give the Broncos and Titans some breathing space, their hope that doing so will ease some of the concerns over the cannibalising of existing outfits.

“We are there to get new sponsors and new people to the game,” Richardson said.

“On top of that we have guaranteed that we will not touch any sponsor … that is on their website. Every other player, staff member or coach we will to contact for two years unless both clubs are agreeable.

“We also made a commitment to the Gold Coast that we will not go to the Gold Coast or the Northern Rivers to pick up players for two years.

“They’re worried about us poaching their staff — their coaches and administration. There is not one person from Brisbane or the Gold Coast that we want on our staff.

“In our summary to the NRL we have talked about where we are getting our players from and it is not Gold Coast or Brisbane.

“It’s about trying to attract new sponsors and we have new sponsors in line who have nothing to so with the Gold Coast and Brisbane.”

The only exceptions to the Firehawks’ pledge would be alcohol and betting sponsors, who generally support more than one club.

The Firehawks will also go though the front door when it comes to players and back off if the Titans or Broncos give them the cold shoulder.

That puts a line through a host of players who could be potential targets should the Firehawks win the expansion race.

The Broncos alone have Patrick Carrigan, Herbie Farnworth, Jamaybe Isaako and Jake Turpin off contract at the end of 2022. The Titans have the likes of Jarrod Wallace and Tino Fa‘asuamaleauii up for grabs at the same time.

The Dolphins and Firehawks are the clear favourites in the expansion race, having edged clear amid concerns over the financial viability of the Jets.

The clock is ticking to add a 17th team for the 2023 season given the new franchise will need to be given time to target and negotiate with quality players. A host of marquee names remain on the market for 2023, although the likes of Parramatta are expected to step up negotiations with their players in coming weeks.

The Eels have the likes of Reed Mahoney, Clint Gutherson, Marata Niukore and Isaiah Papali’i off contract at the end of 2022.

The final step for the commission will be to address expansion with the clubs. While they don’t need their approval to add a new team, their clear preference is to bring the existing clubs on the journey.

“We would love to be able to talk to the clubs generally, not just Gold Coast and Brisbane,” Richardson said.

“We would love to be able to point out or marketing plan is about an 18-44 category, which the NRL don’t have now anyway. It is about a string of people on the western corridor who aren’t attached to a club.”

News Corp strikes $75m deal with NRL to prop up 2023 Redcliffe expansion
    https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/nrl/

The NRL is expected to propose the Redcliffe Dolphins as the expansion team for 2023 after striking a deal with News Corp to inject an extra $75m into the sport over five years.

Sources with knowledge of discussions told the Herald that as part of the deal, the NRL has pledged to reduce the number of free-to-air games involving the News Corp-owned Brisbane Broncos by up to 25 per cent.

The deal with News Corp, which is worth $13m-$15m a season, came as a shock to Nine Entertainment Co, publisher of this masthead, when it was recently told of the arrangement.

The deal has caused some angst among Nine powerbrokers as they head to the negotiation table in the coming weeks to resume what are already proving to be delicate discussions for the free-to-air rights beyond 2022.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys, through his role as Racing NSW chief executive, already has close ties and relationships with News Corp.

This latest deal, which V’landys negotiated alongside NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo, is another sign of his influence at News Corp and comes on top of the $1 billion deal already agreed with the media company for the 2023-2027 broadcast rights.

Both Abdo and V’landys flew to Los Angeles at the start of 2020 to meet with News Corp co-chairman Lachlan Murdoch to secure his blessing for a 17th team in the competition.

The NRL will announce the deal to clubs in a video conference with all 16 teams on Thursday. The code’s expansion assessment committee will then meet the following day to put forward a final recommendation for the prospective franchise, which is expected to be the Redcliffe Dolphins.

NRL clubs currently receive an annual grant of $13m from head office. The clubs have been concerned about the impact a 17th team will have on their bottom lines.

However, News Corp’s injection of $15m a year for the duration of the next broadcast cycle will not only cover the annual grant of the new team, it will provide head office with up to an extra $2m a season.

That is before considering any uplift in rights revenue from Nine, or a rival free-to-air network, for an expanded competition in 2023.

The NRL was able to convince News Corp that a new team in Brisbane, as well as a reduction in Broncos free-to-air games, would drive extra subscriptions to Kayo and Fox Sports in a state where the network has traditionally had a far lower penetration level than NSW because the Broncos are so regularly on free-to-air TV.

The Broncos have more free-to-air games than any other team in the competition, with a maximum of 16 allocated to Channel Nine in a 25-round competition each year.

The Broncos have proven a ratings bonanza over the past decade, with News Corp now set to benefit from the popularity of the game’s most powerful club with an influx of games on Saturdays and Sundays.

The expected addition of the Dolphins will also provide Queensland viewers with another 24 games worth of content including a team from their state.

On the flip side, a reduction in Broncos games for Channel Nine will provide the opportunity for the new expansion team to dominate the airwaves.

It's expected Wayne Bennett will be the coach of the new team, which will have no trouble attracting talent given the reputation of the seven-time premiership-winning coach.

    So much to unpack.

    • Seems the Dolphins are it. I hope the other bids keep working. It may be a long time away but Brisbane can have another club. One that represents south Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and Toowoomba.
    • Yay! Less Broncos on FTA! More space for Cowboys, Titans and Dolphins*.
    • More money for the game. No clubs lose out and extra money for administration.
    • I can see the logic in News Ltd doing this. As they own both Broncos and Kayo/Fox Sports.
    • While Broncos fans may be upset to see less games on FTA. Perhaps they will have more games at family friendly times such as Saturday and Sunday. Something their fanbase has been very vocal about.
    • Great news for fans of the other clubs. More chances to see them on FTA. More exposure and perhaps more corporate support.
    • A fairer distribution of time slots for all clubs,.
