Ready to start 2018 with a BANG!
    https://www.qrl.com.au/

Chairman Bruce Hatcher has today launched an exciting new era of pathway competitions for the Queensland Rugby League.

Speaking at the 2018 QRL Major Competitions Season Launch at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Mr Hatcher welcomed the addition of the new statewide Under 20s competition.

The inaugural Hastings Deering Colts will kick-off tomorrow with six games spread across the south east, central/north Queensland and Victoria.

Mr Hatcher said the addition of the Hastings Deering Colts would “strengthen” the QRL’s flagship competition – the Intrust Super Cup.

“We now have three great competitions to look forward to this year,” Mr Hatcher said.

“It really is an exciting time to be playing the game with the Mal Meninga Cup (U18s), Hastings Deering Colts and Intrust Super Cup providing the pathway for participants to progress to the NRL and higher representative honours.

“I’m exceptionally proud of how the Intrust Super Cup has developed – every local ground has character; and the standard of play and professionalism of players and clubs is a credit to all involved.”

Round 1 of the Intrust Super Cup gets underway tomorrow, with the Sunshine Coast Falcons hosting the Burleigh Bears in front of the Channel 9 cameras (1.10pm kick off).

PNG Hunters begin their premiership defence with a home match against the unpredictable Ipswich Jets, while the first instalment of this year’s Foley Shield rivalry will feature the Mackay Cutters and Townsville Blackhawks.

Read the full Round 1 preview here

The opening round match between the Northern Pride and Wynnum Manly Seagulls has been relocated from Barlow Park to Suzuki Stadium (Langlands Park) due to the heavy rain in Cairns.

Intrust Super CEO Brendan O’Farrell said he was looking forward to another fantastic year of competition.

“It’s a true privilege to be able to support the QRL’s efforts to ensure everyone in our city and regional communities can share in the fantastic opportunity to access great footy week-after-week,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“This year will be an exciting one for Intrust Super. We are building on our strong relationship with the QRL by extending our sponsorship of this great competition for a further five years.

“The strong partnership has further provided the Fund with an opportunity to grow its pathway into the Origin arena.

“We look forward to being part of the winning culture that has been developed by the QRL and now present coach Kevin Walters and his support staff over many years.”

At today’s launch, an inspiring new Hastings Deering Colts advert was unveiled which captures the blood, sweat and tears that go into fulfilling rugby league dreams.

The broadcast campaign will be matched by signage in key areas throughout Queensland.

Whether you are on the plains of the Darling Downs, the cane fields of Mackay or the cattle yards of Central Queensland, you’ll be able to find a poster for the Hastings Deering Colts competition in your region.

Hastings Deering General Manager – People and External Affairs, Vincent Cosgrove said the company was proud to be a sponsor of this new competition that fosters up-and-coming players.

“As one of the largest employers in Queensland’s regional centres, this competition provides Hastings Deering with another great opportunity to support the local communities in which we work, live and play,” Mr Cosgrove said.

“Competitive sport positively engages communities on a number of levels, it keeps people fit, encourages teamwork and fair play and brings communities together to watch the games.”

Mr Cosgrove said this inaugural Hastings Deering Colts competition would provide a unique opportunity through sport to align Queensland’s premier sporting body with Queensland’s favourite machinery company.

“Whether it is in our workshops or on the footy field, we are committed to making a difference and supporting and fostering the young talent of the future,” Mr Cosgrove said.

“We strive to bring out the best in our young people and our company values are closely matched to the QRL’s values of Excellence, Inclusiveness, Courage and Teamwork.”

“It’s a great partnership with the Greatest Game of All and we can’t wait for kick off tomorrow.”

Tragic loss of teammate fuels Hunters’ hunger for more glory
    http://www.couriermail.com.au

THE Sunshine Coast Falcons may be motivated by revenge in today’s grand final rematch, but PNG captain Ase Boas says the Hunters are playing for something more meaningful.

The Hunters made Intrust Super Cup history last year when they claimed their first premiership, beating the Falcons 12-10 in a thrilling showdown at Suncorp Stadium.

For the Falcons, today’s rematch is a chance for them to enact their revenge. But for PNG, their premiership defence this season has been made all the more important following the tragic loss of former Hunters and Kumuls teammate Kato Ottio, who passed away in January due to heatstroke at age 23.

Hunters skipper Boas, who played alongside Ottio in last year’s World Cup, said there were three factors pushing PNG this year.

The first motivation is to prove they can continue to be dominant, even after the loss of several star players, including brothers Stanton and Wellington Albert (Widnes Vikings).

The second is to show the next generation of players, like Charlie Simon, are just as good as those who have gone before them.

And finally to play for their “brother, friend and teammate” in Ottio.

“This season is dedicated to Kato Ottio,” Boas said.

“Every time we run into a playing field, we all have in the back of our minds that he is with us and we will always play for him. He will always be in our hearts and minds.

“It is sad to lose a teammate like him … but in order to appreciate his contribution with the team, we need to play hard for him week in, week out.”

The Hunters missed two weeks of their pre-season to mourn the death of Ottio and have started the Intrust Super Cup season with one win and one loss.

Intrust Super Cup: Burleigh take points over Tweed in 32-12 rivalry round win
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

BURLEIGH has taken points in the Intrust Super Cup derby against Tweed, winning 32-12 in the mud at Piggabeen.

The Bears led 22-0 at halftime but the win did not come easily, with Tweed threatening to come back after scoring twice in the 20 minutes after the break.

Seagulls half AJ Brimson showed why he is regarded as an NRL player-in-waiting by the Titans after attempting to orchestrate a miracle comeback.

Brimson put in a neat kick to allow fullback Ali Grant to score minutes after the break and when centre Regan Muir capitalised on a loose carry from Tyronne Roberts-Davis, the home side was within 10 points.

Burleigh took control again with the help of their experienced hands Luke Page, Pat Politoni, Jamie Dowling and Jamal Fogarty taking charge.

But it was second-rower Hayden Schwass that stood out, with the Bears capitalising off the back of his strong running and link play.

Schwass, who trained with the Titans in the off-season, snared man-of-the-match honours for his efforts and said the Bears could not have asked for a better start to the season after winning their first three matches.

There were plenty of positives for Tweed though.

While they paid the price for lapses in the shadows of halftime, conceding two tries in three minutes before the break, Ben Woolf’s men were in the game Cheyne Whitelaw was sent to the sin bin inside the final 10 minutes after running in from a distance to join a melee.

Page sealed the match with a try under the posts in the 75th minute, with Dowling adding another in the 78th minute to blow the scoreline out.

The Bears host Souths Logan at Pizzey Park next Saturday, with Tweed heading to Papua New Guinea to play on Easter Sunday.

Being a Tweed Heads Seagulls supporter has totally sucked for too many years in a row now. I’m already getting a bit antsy with Woolf.
