In a historic culmination to a journey which commenced in 2012, the Brisbane junior and senior rugby league bodies agreed to amalgamate to form a company which will oversee the game in the State’s capital and surrounding regions.

This year’s Annual General Meetings of the Greater Brisbane Juniors Rugby League and the Brisbane Second Division Rugby League saw members vote overwhelmingly to support the introduction of the amalgamated body.

This follows a period of extensive consultation undertaken through the Division with all Brisbane clubs over many months.

Brisbane join both the Ipswich and Gold Coast Local Leagues in this new governance model after they voted in late 2016 to amalgamate.

This new governance structure is based on recommendations through the Australian Sports Commission and also the defined Mandatory Sports Governance Principles.

The amalgamated bodies are Companies Limited by guarantee and include elected football representatives as well as independent directors drawn from the community due to their specific skill set.

In addition, the new Board is supported by a number of sub-committees set up to guide the Board operations.

These committees are:

· Finance, Audit, and Risk Management;

· Competitions;

· Governance and Compliance; and

· Game Development.

Representation to these committees will be sourced from the clubs, supporters and also the business community in each region.

Anyone interested in joining a Brisbane committee should contact League Manager, Shane McNally at s.mcnally@qrl.com.au for more information. For interested parties at Ipswich or the Gold Coast, you can enquire further through the League Managers:

· Gold Coast – Scott Dunshea s.dunshea@qrl.com.au

· Ipswich – Brendon Lindsay b.lindsay@qrl.com.au

The SEQ Division is now in a position to realign its Committee Structure to match the structure of its leagues to provide a consistent approach to key issues in the game as well as better lines of communication with the QRL, which is adjusting its Rules to facilitate these changes.

SEQ Division Chairman Brad Tallon was thrilled with this outcome and praised the efforts of the Working Groups that were put in place to facilitate these changes.

He also congratulated the League Chairs and Boards and the club network in each region who actively engaged in this process to achieve this complex change in a relatively short time.

Tallon acknowledged the input of many of the Division Board Members and also the QRL for their backing, particularly Independent Director Bruce Prescott who has assisted greatly through the process.
