When Mat Rogers retired he said “I’ll be a Titan forever”, I just heard him on the radio asked if he stays in touch with the Sharks or Titans and he said “Yes Cronulla for sure I bleed black white and blue”.

What happened?? That makes me sad. Is this Calamity Annesley again??

No great shock or even disappointment. Given the legacy at Cronulla with his dad I'm fine with that.

His dad is a Sharks hero. It gets a bit tough when you play for more than one club. It would have been nice if he had said something about the Titans. So that exchange makes it seem like NO he doesnt keep in touch with the Titans.

Is there some person at the Titans who is responsible to act as a conduit to former players?

But I'd at least expect and want some level of connection from the Titans and him. He really need him actually IMO.

Gold Coast Titans four-try NRL debutant Jordan Atkins now in wellbeing role at Cronulla Sharks
    http://www.gcbulletin.com.au

JORDAN Atkins “can’t kick” the tag of being ‘that bloke who scored four tries on debut’ but he’s not letting it get in the way of him helping the modern crop of NRL players.

Atkins booked his place in the record books with an incredible debut for Gold Coast in Round 1 of the 2008 season against North Queensland to spoil Johnathan Thurston’s injury comeback party.

A 25-year-old debutant, fans wondered where the winger had been all this time.

Atkins ended up playing another 29 games for the Titans – plus 12 for Parramatta – before finishing his footy career with a cherished season abroad as he and his battered body decided it was time for “a real job”.

Having already completed teaching and business degrees, it didn’t take long for the Stanthorpe product to land on his feet with a role at the Cronulla Sharks, where he is now head of wellbeing and education.

“It’s hard to explain what I do but I work closely with the NRL, the RLPA (Rugby League Players Association) and obviously the Cronulla Sharks just with player engagement, education and wellbeing,” Atkins said.

“So I work daily with the NRL squad and oversee the department including all squads being 200-plus players.

“It’s an area that is growing … the NRL and the RLPA and each individual club have invested significantly in it in the past few years and that’s going to continue.

“It’s a job that I thoroughly enjoy. I find it very rewarding … it’s basically a 24/7 role but it’s something I am definitely passionate about.”

Reflecting on his debut heroics, Atkins says he more so remembers the people he met in footy rather than the tries he scored.

“I can’t kick that,” he laughs of the four-try tag, adding he hopes to one day return to the Gold Coast.

“But that’s all right, at the end of the day I dreamt of playing footy professionally as a kid and got to do it for 10 years and it’s just created so many opportunities and opened so many doors for me.”

    FAST FACTS: JORDAN ATKINS

Atkins scores his fourth try against the Cowboys.
    Age: 35

    Born: Stanthorpe, Qld

NRL debut: 2008, Gold Coast against North Queensland at Robina

    Teams: Gold Coast (30 games, 2008-10, 2013); Parramatta (12 games, 2011), London Broncos (14 games, 2014)

    NRL career win-loss: 18-1-23 (42.86 per cent)

    ■ Became the second player to score four tries on first grade debut. The only other player to achieve the feat is Tony Nash for Canterbury in 1942.

    ■ His debut, at the age of 25, coincided with the maiden game held at Cbus Super Stadium, or Skilled Park as it was then known.

    ■ Played in the Titans’ only finals victory to date, when they beat the Warriors 28-16 in 2010. He was a late call-up in the No.19 jersey after Preston Campbell failed to overcome a hamstring injury.

    ■ Scored a try in London’s sole win during his time at the club – a shock upset of Leeds.

Former NRL bad boy Greg Bird will miss the Catalans Dragons' Challenge Cup final after failing in his appeal against a four-match suspension.
The former Kangaroo Test forward was given the ban for a dangerous tackle during the Dragons' 25-20 defeat at Wigan in the last round of the Super League regular season.

The ban ruled him out of Sunday's cup semi-final against St Helens and will also force him to miss the trip to Wembley to face Warrington plus the Catalans' opening two matches of the Super 8s.
Bird, who had a checkered career with Cronulla and the Gold Coast and was also once a regular for NSW in State of Origin clashes, challenged the grading of the charge but an appeals panel felt it was correct and the suspension should stand.

Gee that’s a stretch, imo ... I watch all their stuff and top 3 in SL for sure but not a patch on NRL. Cows of last night would whack them let alone our top ten or so. Never liked Roberts so no argument there though.

Foundation Titans captain an advocate for women’s sport

SCOTT Prince is adamant the focus of his daughters’ lives will be on education, ahead of their sporting passions.

But is thrilled to see the advances in women’s sport for any young girls looking to pursue a professional career.

“It’s great. Not only women in rugby league but woman across the board in sport as well,” said Prince, who will be part of a new era in sport this weekend when he joins the Brisbane Broncos’ NRLW team as an assistant coach.

“It’s about time they got the spotlight they deserve. They work hard, if not harder than males in any sport.

“So it’s great to see they get that recognition, especially in rugby league. Off the back of the AFL and what they’ve done over the last couple of years, it was only a matter of time for us to introduce the women and have them start their own competition.”

Prince’s two daughters are currently more involved in touch footy than league and their focus will be on education before any potential involvement in professional sport.

But he is thrilled they — and other young girls — will at least have the opportunity.

“Generally, it’s great exposure and great opportunities for all women in all sport,” he said. “From a personal point of view, it’s great to be involved, it will be a great experience in terms of coaching.”

“It’s only a condensed season but from an experience point of view it will be great for me and my development if I want to go down that line of work.

Scott Prince, an assistant with the Broncos’ NRLW side, also works in community with the Broncos Girls Academy. Pic Darren England.
“But the one thing I’ve learnt in the initial stages working with the women, is that they listen and they take it on board — so that’s a first.

“And they’re really open-minded with the way we approach each game and each session and skill of the game.”

    Nathan Davis in trouble

Williams' career in jeopardy over second strike drugs test

The career of former Kangaroo and NSW forward Tony Williams appears over with he and another Parramatta teammate understood to have recorded a second strike under the code’s illicit drugs policy.

Williams and utility back Nathan Davis will not be offered new Eels contracts after the pair became embroiled in the NRL’s latest drugs scandal. Both players are understood to have tested positive to cocaine, which if confirmed at a disciplinary hearing this week would be a second strike under the policy and incur an automatic 12-match suspension.

It is the latest incident to overshadow the NRL finals series after Canterbury was hit with a proposed $250,000 fine for the behaviour of its staff and players during Mad Monday celebrations. South Sydney has also kept the NRL’s integrity unit busy with a lewd video tape scandal from an unidentified woman, just as revelations emerged that forward Zane Musgrove is facing domestic violence allegations.

The Williams and Davis situation is yet another setback in a horror season for Parramatta. The club was hoping to stay out of the headlines after earning the club's third wooden spoon in seven seasons. However, the Eels are now in the process of arranging disciplinary hearings for the pair.

Parramatta offered Williams a lifeline with a one-year deal at the start of the season. Their faith was tested when he was fined $1000 and had his driver’s license suspended for 12 months after blowing 0.12 during the off-season. After serving a club-imposed two game suspension, the man dubbed T-Rex showed glimpses of his best form in five first-grade appearances. But just as he was returning to full fitness after a series of injury setbacks, the former NSW and Australian forward suffered a season-ending injury with a ruptured ACL.

Williams had hoped he had shown enough in his second stint at Parramatta to justify another one-year deal. However, the Eels have opted to sever ties.

Williams may seek to continue his career in England, but prospective clubs would likely baulk given a 12-match ban would apply to that competition as well. The NRL and the Super League have an agreement for suspensions to apply to both competitions, as evidenced when Ben Barba was forced to sit out 12 weeks for St Helens after recording a second strike to cocaine. Barba has subsequently reignited his career, to the point where he is the favourite to take out the competition’s Man of Steel award before returning to the NRL with the Cowboys next year.

Davis was also off contract and was unlikely to have earned another before the latest incident. The 22-year-old joined Parramatta last year after making eight first-grade appearances for the Gold Coast. He made his Eels NRL debut last against North Queensland last year but has not been able to add to the tally, playing out the remainder of his contract for feeder club Wentworthville Magpies.

Parramatta CEO Bernie Gurr was contacted but declined to comment.

The NRL and the Rugby League Players’ Association are in the process of reviewing its drugs policy as part of the collective bargaining agreement, but there is already a push from clubs for more transparency. The clubs believe they could make more informed choices on prospective signings if they knew whether they had copped a first strike for recreational substances. The issue was raised at a recent meeting of club chief executives, while the Rugby League Players’ Association believes a 12-game ban is too harsh as it effectively rubs offenders out for half a season.

The latest drug scandal will raise questions about the culture at Parramatta after players displayed a lack of discipline on-and-off the field in 2018.

Fairfax Media attempted to contact both players for comment.
