Former Gold Coast Titan, Brisbane Bronco Steve Michaels pleads guilty to drug charges
    DECEMBER 17, 2018
A JUDGE who attended the funeral of a young drug addict today has slammed former Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane Broncos star Steve Michaels after he pleaded guilty to supplying and possessing cocaine.

Michaels, 31, escaped with community service but not before receiving a severe dressing down from Judge David Kent QC.

Michaels, 31, was one of several high-profile Titans caught up in a Crime and Corruption Commission cocaine trafficking sting that also snared code-hopping star Karmichael Hunt.

Michaels was arrested by police after returning from a rugby league playing stint in the UK in November last year.

He was committed for trial in May but pleaded guilty in Southport District Court today to three counts of supplying cocaine and five counts of possessing the drug.

The court was told Michaels bought thousands of dollars worth of cocaine from now-convicted drug trafficker John Touma eight times between August and October 2014.

He used text messages to Touma including one that read ‘the boys are chasing some wine - any chance?’

He arranged to get 11.5 grams of cocaine from Touma for friends including a person named ‘Karmichael’ and about the same amount of drug for his own use, the court was told.

Crown prosecutor Gary Churchill told the court that while there was ‘no commercial element’ to Michaels’ offending, it involved ‘quite significant recreational use’.

Defence barrister Jeff Hunter QC said Michaels’ father had died of cancer in 2014 and he was ‘not enjoying his football’.

Mr Hunter said there was also a ‘culture’ of cocaine use among Michaels’ peers.

He said Michaels had no criminal record and was now working as a mature age apprentice plumber, earning less than $45,000 a year compared with his $150,000 pay packet as a professional footballer.

Judge Kent said Michaels had committed ‘serious criminal conduct’ which had a maximum penalty of 20 years’ jail.

“I attended the funeral of a young girl this morning who had a drug problem,” the judge said.

“I hope you realise the seriousness of all of this. Mr Michaels, it must not be repeated.

“You clearly have a positive side to your nature and you really need to put this behind you, as it appears you have.”

Judge Kent sentenced Michaels to 200 hours community service and did not record a conviction.

Brett Delaney: Eye injury forces ex-Leeds Rhinos back-rower to retire
    https://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-league/47145995

Former Leeds Rhinos, Gold Coast and Parramatta back-rower Brett Delaney has retired from professional rugby league after a repeat of a facial injury.

Delaney, 33, joined Championship side Featherstone Rovers for 2019, but was again injured in a pre-season trial game against Halifax.

The Australian ended a nine-year stay at the Rhinos at the end of 2018.

While at Headingley, he played in and won three Grand Finals and also lifted two Challenge Cups.

"Unfortunately it's not worked out and it looks like I will have to have another operation, but I've still really enjoyed the short time I've had here," Delaney said.

"I've had a great career, where I've done everything and don't have any regrets. I'd like to give a special thanks to all my coaches and the supporters at Leeds and Featherstone."

After spells in the National Rugby League in his homeland, Delaney moved to Super League as a centre but ended up playing the majority of his 213 games for Leeds in the pack.

Inaugural Gold Coast Titans hooker Clint Amos kicking goals in business career
    https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/

NOT only did Clint Amos’ stint at the Gold Coast Titans give him the chance to represent his hometown NRL team but it set him on the path to his post-footy business career.

The Burleigh Bears junior was signed for Gold Coast’s maiden campaign in 2007 and became the first man to ever wear the No.9 for the club.

Amos played 15 games all up that season but was limited to six appearances the following year as Nathan Friend established himself as the first choice hooker, and he rejoined the Cowboys for three more years. The Titans, though, hold a special place with him.

“I got the majority of my games at the Titans under coach (John) Cartwright,” Amos said.

“For the couple of years that we had, Friendy and I shared the role and had some good success and knocked on the door of finals.

“I learnt a lot of great skills obviously from Friendy and professionally from Scott Prince, Mat Rogers and Luke Bailey.”

Retiring at just 28, Amos transitioned into a role as the Cowboys’ business development manager. Now aged 35, he has continued down that path as a Melbourne-based Bacardi business development executive via a connection to his Titans days.

“The national sales manager for Bacardi and the state sales manager were our major sponsor, Bacardi and XXXX or Lion Nathan, while I was on the Gold Coast,” he said.

“I was always attracted to business outside of the sport and hospitality, it speaks so many languages. The opportunity came knocking to relocate to Melbourne and I reached out to the two guys.

“So from a chance meeting in 2007 and 2008 through sponsorship of the club, fast forward 10 years and I am now working for that business.”

Amos was around business environments growing up and his parents Ian and Christine still manage the Burleigh Bears Leagues Club.

Amos and his wife Hannah were most recently known for appearing on the block, having developed a love of property design and construction while building a house in Townsville.

    ■ Born: Ballina

    ■ Lives: Melbourne

    ■ Age: 35

    ■ Wife: Hannah

    ■ Children: Finn, Poppy, Archie

    ■ Junior club: Burleigh Bears

    ■ High school: Palm Beach Currumbin

    ■ NRL games: 37 (16 for North Queensland in ’06 and ’09-11; 21 for Gold Coast in ’07-08). He also spent time in the Melbourne system before that.

    ■ Amos started and finished on a high. He debuted off the bench for the Cowboys in a 20-16 win over Manly in Round 2, 2006. His last match was a 22-12 win over Newcastle in Round 18, 2011.

    ■ He did not get the chance, however, to score a try or compete in a finals match.

    ■ Retired at 28 years of age.

    ■ Parents Ian and Christine manage the Burleigh Bears Leagues Club.

    ■ Joined Hannah in appearing on television show The Block.

    ■ Since hanging up the boots, has held roles including Cowboys business development manager and is currently Bacardi’s business development executive.

I told everyone many times over many yrs that Elgey was being played on the wrong side of the field, his best work is on the right hand side both in defence and attack.

Former Coast players relive Titans’ history
    http://www.gcbulletin.com.au

TALES of hard-fought wins, big hits and game-changing plays will be on the cards at Robina today when the Titans old boys watch the new generation take on Manly.

About 80 former players from the Giants, Seagulls, Chargers and Titans, including Ronnie Gibbs, Billy Johnson, Kevin Campion and Geoff Bagnall, will be there, along with 13 local junior rugby league players wearing a jersey showcasing the clubs’ history.

The specially designed kit will feature the logos from the four Gold Coast franchises, with the young players wearing it and running on to the field with the Titans players before the game.

Head of the Old Boys and former Giants player Geoff Bagnall said the day was a great initiative, bringing together some past legends of the game.

“There’ll be a group of players dating back to the 1980s … there’s also some young blokes in there who have just left the club as well,” he said.

“Most of us will be going down to the field to clap the players on.

“It’ll be a great day. Some of the Manly old boys will be along as well, Steve Martin and Ronnie Gibbs, who played for both clubs.

“It’s a been a good thing. We’ve helped a lot of old players along the way, getting together and having a bit of a yarn. We’re kind of like the Men of League, there’s a good support network there for these guys who are no longer playing the game.”

The jersey concept was all about the young players.

“The Old Boys came up with the jersey idea and put it to the Titans to reward some of the local junior players, maybe not the best players, but the boy or the girl who does the most around the club, the club hero.

“It happens that there are 13 local clubs, so it works out pretty perfect that way.”
