The Gold Coast Titans, along with the wider rugby league community, are rallying around young player Joseph Pouniu and his family as the youngster recovers from a serious spinal injury.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help Joseph and the Pouniu family as he recovers. You can support the fundraiser here - GoFundMe

Pouniu suffered a spinal cord injury, during a Future Titans U17 rugby league game against the Brisbane Broncos in a pre-season trial on the Gold Coast on Saturday 28 January.

'Joe,' as known by most, was treated on the field by the club doctor and paramedics before being transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department in Brisbane to treat his spinal injury, where he underwent immediate surgery to stabilise his neck and reattach his c4 and c5 to his spine.

After suffering damage to his spinal cord he now faces an enormous battle to be able to regain movement from the shoulders down.

After 9 days in the intensive care unit Pouniu was moved to the orthopedic trauma unit, where he has started his rehabilitation journey.

He will spend the following month in the trauma unit before moving to the Spinal Ward for extensive rehabilitation.

Titans CEO, Steve Mitchell said the club was supporting Joseph and the Pouniu family on their journey.

"The Titans club, led by our owners Daryl Kelly and Rebecca Frizelle, along with Chairman Dennis Watt, are behind Joseph and his family the whole way," he said.

“Joseph is a terrific young man, a leader and is a big part of our Future Titans program.

"The injuries that Joseph has sustained are serious and he has a long road ahead but the club will be here to support him.

"The rugby league community is known for how it rallies around its own during hard times and that is what is happening here already.

"The GoFundMe gives another way for the community to support Joseph's recovery and I am sure will be well supported."

Joseph’s family have been advised to expect at least six months in the hospital, as he has a long road to recovery and been told there is a chance he may never walk again.

Whilst that is a possibility, the rugby league community will continue to hope for the best outcome.

You can support Joe and his family via the GoFundMe page here.

We all want to get behind Joseph and support him now and into the future. Especially because he is one of us, a Titan. Let him know that he isn't alone during this dark time.

Please consider sharing the gofundme link and donating.

Consider trying to share the fundraising link beyond Titans circles and to other Rugby League and club networks. I'm sure they will be equally motivated to get involved.

We are all behind you Joseph.

Been thinking about the young fella since the news dropped. I have no doubt the Titans will be with him and his family every step of the way. Heartbroken there's a chance he may never walk again. Only 16 too. What a cruel world.

Overwhelming support continues for Joseph and Pouniu family
    https://www.titans.com.au/news/2023/...pouniu-family/

The rugby league community is hoping to raise $100,000 to help around Joseph Pouniu and family with his recovering from a serious spinal injury.

With almost $60,000 already contributed thanks to the extraordinary generosity shown through donations via a dedicated GoFundMe page, all funds will go a long way to support the 17-year-old and his family on his road to recovery.

Joseph's mum Nuseta was full of praise for the immense support of her son over the past month.

"We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many, many people who have reached out to our family, sent thoughtful messages, and visited Joe in the hospital," she said.

"Over the past few weeks as our family dealt with our son’s tragic accident, the outpouring of support we have received from the wider community has been overwhelming.

"We have felt your love for our Joe and we know we have an army praying for Joe and our family. The prayers of so many are truly sustaining us through heartache, uncertainty, and grief.

"Your prayers have been the biggest comfort to us, and they will continue to help us and Joe during these difficult times and the long journey, and the challenges he is enduring."

Undergoing immediate surgery to stabilise his neck and reattach his C4 and C5 to his spine after leaving the field in the Future Titans' Under 17 pre-season trial against the Broncos, the young forward has shown promising signs of progress since his operation, with more and more growth every day.

"Joe is still in the orthopaedic trauma unit; however, the team of nurses and physios at his ward are fantastic and they’re taking very good care of Joe," Nuseta said.

"He has already started some of his rehabilitation and he is making good progress, seeing improvements each day. He has started sitting up in a wheelchair and does an hour or so every day. His timing sitting up is slowly increasing day by day, which is a huge improvement in such a short period of time. He has also got his appetite back and is eating well.

"Joe is now in his second week without the use of oxygen machines and is breathing on his own but is still very fatigued at times from all the medications he’s on, especially after his physio exercises.

"He has some movement and little sensation on his left arm, but not so much on his right arm. He has started to get tingling in his legs - pins and needles every now and then; however, he still has no movement or sensation from the waist down.

"We are relaying all your thoughtful messages to Joe daily and talking to him."

The support and fundraising effort is set to continue with a number of initiatives at Titans home games this season - starting next Saturday, March 18 when the Gold Coast face Melbourne at Cbus Super Stadium - as well as the dedicated GoFundMe page continuing to remain open for those to contribute to Joseph's recovery.

"Words cannot adequately express the depth of our gratitude and love for all the support, concern, and financial contributions offered to Joe and we sincerely apologise that we are unable to personally thank everyone for their generosity," Nuseta said.

"To everyone who has taken time out of their schedule to read Joe’s story, shared his GoFundMe and donated individually or as a family or club... thank you!

"To all the rugby league clubs, businesses, organisations, our St Eugene and CTK school community and parish community as well as the wider community that have kindly donated or have held and continue to hold fundraisers to raise funds for Joe, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

"We are very humbled and we’re forever so grateful. We find strength in knowing our Joe is loved by so many people in the wider community.

"We kindly ask for your continued prayers and to please pray to bless his body - that his blood and body remains healthy and clean and rejects any infection."

Titans legend Anthony Don to run Gold Coast Marathon as fundraiser for Joseph Pouniu
    https://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/

A Gold Coast Titans legend is doing his bit to raise money for a rising rugby league star who has a serious spinal chord injury from a game. Find out how you can help.

In the midst of the biggest battle faced in his young life, Joseph Pouniu has found a legendary supporter in his long road to recovery.

Gold Coast Titans’ all-time leading try scorer Anthony Don has announced he will take part in the Gold Coast Marathon to raise funds for the former rising rugby league star.

HELP JOSEPH POUNIU - CLICK HERE

Pouniu, 17, suffered a serious spinal injury while playing for the Future Titans on January 28.

Once identified as an aspiring leader of the NRL club, the promising forward — who was also plying his trade in Redcliffe’s junior ranks — was at last able to attend a major event last weekend; proudly donning the Titans colours at their Sunday clash with the Dolphins.

A GoFundMe Page to support Pouniu’s rehabilitation has reached more than $71,000, and now Don will take part in the 42km marathon on Sunday July 2 in a bid to boost that figure further.

“I’m just looking to raise funds for Joseph Pouniu, so I thought I’d run the marathon and try and raise as much money as I can from the local Gold Coast community and the rugby league community in general,” Don said.

“I’ve never run a marathon and I’ve struggled to run long distances … so it’s going to be a real challenge for me, but the challenge isn’t anything like Joseph is facing.

“He was such a great kid who was captain of his high school and captain of the Future Titans Under 17s when we played the Broncos.

“It was a life-changing incident, so the family and himself have got a long battle ahead and as much money raised will go a long way into his improvement in the future.”

Gold Coast Marathon program manager Ryan McDonald praised Don’s part in the 2023 event to assist in the fundraising efforts for ‘Big Joe’, with the former Titan receiving complimentary race entry to participate.
