Gold Coast Titans head of culture Mal Meninga stood by Michael Gordon and other wayward players when former coach Garth Brennan wanted to shake up or even sack some of the side’s leaders for not upholding club standards.
Brennan felt totally unsupported and, with management going against him, believed they condoned senior players setting a bad example for the rest of the squad. Players were living rock-star lifestyles and playing like a midweek covers band.

The Titans have been through drug and behaviour-related issues in recent years. Gordon, a former player and a member of the club’s coaching staff, was arrested last Sunday along with six other people following a six-month investigation into the alleged supply of MDMA and cocaine on the NSW-Queensland border.
Gordon was charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited drug and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug. He will face Tweed Heads Local Court on December 14. There is no suggestion Meninga knew anything about Gordon’s alleged involvement in supplying drugs or any other illegal activity.
Earlier this year, Brennan, a policeman for 18 years, also alerted club owner Rebecca Frizelle to the problems he’d had to deal with as coach in 2018 and 2019.
Gordon’s arrest shocked the NRL, as he was seen as one of the game’s good guys. But since his arrest, this column has heard other players with links to Parramatta – where Gordon played in 2016 – have come forward to raise concerns about him.
Former NRL player and Gold Coast Titans assistant coach Michael Gordon has been arrested in connection with a drug syndicate.
The Titans have questions to answer about why Brennan’s concerns about the culture at the club were ignored.
The issue reached a flashpoint when the Titans played Wests Tigers at Tamworth in April last year. After the 30-14 loss, Brennan banned the players from going out due to the result and because of a short turnaround.
Gordon and other players went out anyway and Brennan wanted to stand players down to correct the culture, or at least create one. He went to Meninga with his concerns that players were partying and not respecting the club. Meninga overruled him, saying Brennan was going to lose the players because he was being too hard on them. Meninga backed the players over the coach.
This was at a club where Kevin Proctor had already been busted using cocaine, and a number of other players had been caught up in another drug case. Proctor is now club captain, Meninga is the head of culture and Brennan is out of a job. Worse than that, Brennan had to deal with false claims he had been out drinking in the lead-up to the aforementioned Tigers match. He was described as being ‘‘under the weather’’ in a media report, which his lawyers and manager looked into.

Ricky Stuart has never been afraid to speak his mind. Now he'll get a say on league's rules
Brennan has text messages that show him corresponding with the club doctor about an illness. He vomited during the game and had to cancel a half-time interview as a result.
Instead of the players being under pressure for their behaviour, Brennan was the one in the spotlight. Now it’s the Titans who have questions to answer.
The club and Meninga would not comment on the issues raised because Gordon has an upcoming court case.
Pffftt...nice try Brennan and Weidler.
It’s a beautiful day for a morning walk and swim at the beach or your pool, later on today/this evening a few beers and watch some cricket.
Good times on the GC-Tweed.
They love driving spikes into our club. Not listening to it, not bothered, don't care that they don't like us anyways.
If Mick was arrested during the season when you have NRL 360 on every night plus other Fox Programs desperate for anything to talk about and the Murdoch media (Badel, Kent etc) in full Rugby League swing then it could have been horrible but Weidler is the only one really trying to push this along.
Garth Brennan was already no longer welcome up here. That’s now fully reinforced.
He is trying to rewrite history, especially the bit about him being on the beers in Tamworth.
He’s bitter, he cannot Coach and he’s dishonest.
Weidler has always been Mr Rent A Quote. Back when Mundine was playing, he would tell Weidler what to write and he’d obediently do it.
The guys a joke.
Back to chilling. Enough about this.

Interesting he has text messages that he was vomiting (a side effect of too much alcohol too) but hasn't produced anything regarding the meetings with Rebecca and Mal Re: his concerns on Gordon. He would be smart enough to put that in writing to cover his ass surely.
With Brennan’s background I nervously have a ‘where there’s smoke there’s fire’ feeling, mainly because I’ve never been comfortable with Proctor’s glorification.

Four reasons to escape to Queensland: Sun, Surf, Sand & the Titans.
Copley to the Drongoes just became official and the Drongoes supporters have gone into meltdown over the news.
I saw that Leivaha Pulu is on a train and trial deal with the broncos. He can join Albert Kelly, Dale Copley, David Mead, Jesse Arthur's in the ex Titans posse at redhill.
I liked pulu. A pity he went to the warriors
The 'Ponies are fast assembling a wooden spoon team.
Those players all tried hard when they were with us and were generally the pick of their group but still they were all fractured in some way or other ... is Kevvie the coach to bring the best out of them? Just don't see it.
They could be targeting Jaryd “Fingers” Hayne to complete the set.
