I still don't think we'll be moved on. We're just easy fodder to give these trumped up articles some gumption. Only gotta look the spread. 1 NZ team, 1 Vic team, 1 ACT team, 3 Qld teams, 10 NSW teams. So it's bleedin' obvious where it got to give if NRL want to branch out and prosper.

In fact, two Sydney teams could be culled. Send Cronulla up this way, and send Manly to the West Coast (vice versa). We can do with other team up this way, and NRL looks a bit silly not investing in Perth especially after RU pulled out of the area. It would appear to be some good interests over there considering the crowd game 2 Origin pulled.

Manly and Cronulla fans will put up incredible resistance. We need to galvanise and be just as vocal and hard at it.

It was originally published on the Courier-Mail website as a Badel article this morning. I now see it's been changed to Rothfield from the Sunday Telegraph. It would appear CM/Badel were happy to claim it as their own. Tsk tsk..

Brisbane to get second NRL club

Brisbane is set to get a second NRL team, but it will come at the cost of one of Sydney’s nine clubs, or one of the two other Queensland teams. SEE WHICH THREE TEAMS ARE MOST AT RISK.

Phil Rothfield, Sports editor-at-large, The Sunday Telegraph

RUGBY league broadcaster Channel 9 wants to kill off an existing NRL club to make way for a new Brisbane team in a move that could leave one of Sydney’s nine traditional clubs facing extinction.

The network wants – and is likely to get – the competition changes by 2023 when the next multi-billion dollar TV broadcast deal is in place.

Channel 9’s director of sport Tom Malone has told The Sunday Telegraph the network is against increasing the number of teams from 16 and wants at least one club to go to accomodate a new team.

“That could come from another team being relocated there, or better still another club being discontinued and a new club established in Brisbane,” Mr Malone said. “In a perfect world you’d probably have one or two less teams

“What clubs should go? I’m not going to get into that one. It’s a hard decision but probably one that needs to be made in the longer term interests of the game.”

The NRL has set up an internal working group to make a detailed analysis of potential new markets. An interim report will go to the independent commission in October.

Cronulla Sharks, Manly Sea Eagles and Gold Coast Titans would be most in danger if Channel 9 gets its way.

A decision could be made as early as December on the future make-up of the competition before negotiations begin with the broadcasters.

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany also wants a second Brisbane team as part of the next broadcast deal but does not support moves to kick out a club.

“They love their rugby league in Brisbane and it seems a natural fit,” Mr Delany said. “You get that inter-city rivalry which enhances tribalism and that’s ultimately what we want.

“It’s all about generating more fans and bigger TV audiences. I don’t know if you’d get that real tribal traction with rugby league in Perth that you’d get in Brisbane.”

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg met Queensland premier Annastasia Palaszczuk on Friday to discuss the viability and gauge support for a second Brisbane team.

TV bosses believe two Brisbane sides will create a rivalry to match the A League Sydney FC versus Wanderers derbies or the AFL’s Perth-Adelaide inter-city showdowns that attract massive crowds and ratings.

There are fears that there are not enough quality players for an extra competitive team.

Channel Nine insists a team should go instead of having 17 teams and a bye each week.

“It’s for other people to decide but it’s not just about having enough quality players,” Mr Malone said. “It’s about coaches, support staff, administrators. And more clubs and more games just adds more cost — but is unlikely to generate any incremental revenue.”

The broadcasters carry enormous influence in the game. Without their $2 billion investment, there is no game.

However, the NRL is likely to stand by existing clubs, not wanting a repeat of the angry protests when South Sydney Rabbitohs were dumped 20 years ago.

Tell that to the coaches and squad, mate. We're here, they just have to show they're interested as well on making it on the Coast.

2010 was the last time we've had a lick of finals off the back of their own efforts, and I'll never forget that look on Mat's face being knocked out by the chooks while being at Suncorp that Friday night. Where the **** has that culture gone, these useless ****s just don't want to come together as one, ffs.

I'll shut up now, getting a bit peaved with it all..

    Thanks Toads.
PS I do try my best to pass on to the Coaches and Squad that I want more passion, effort and resilience but if we don’t fight when it comes to talk of killing a club then we are the easy target.

Regardless of players (who are temporary) I’m here to ensure we have a team for us and future generations to love

I’m so glad I don’t have a subscription anymore to News Ltd. I bet the comments section in their articles this year have been absolutely brutal.

Privately owned. How can they force them to relocate the club? The key to survival is tapping into this gc talent pool and making it attractive for the juniors to sign here. We dont need to sign outsiders. Give local kids a chance and more local kids will sign due to the fact they have a better opportunity here to get a shot at first grade. Why would josh bevan sign with the roosters if he knew he would get a shot 2/3 years earlier with the titans?

I'm sure there's clauses in place where NRL can take back the license. It could prove prove to be a scrappy takeover, but no establishment issues club licenses without having any control at all.

Monday Buzz: Simple solution to ensure second Brisbane NRL team

Brisbane should host a rugby league game every week, not once a fortnight. But the NRL cannot kill off a Sydney team to make way for a new franchise, writes Phil Rothfield.

    Phil Rothfield, The Daily Telegraph

These are the simple statistics that show why the NRL must introduce a second Brisbane team.

The appetite for rugby league in the Queensland capital is double that of any Sydney club.

The Broncos average 31,792 fans at the best rugby league stadium in the country in the past five years.

It is a town that should host a rugby league game every week, not once a fortnight.

We revealed over the weekend that Channel 9 wants to kill off an NRL club to allow a second team into Brisbane.

The usual suspects the Cronulla Sharks and Manly Sea Eagles immediately become the likely victims.

Try telling the 18,000 fans who crammed into Shark Park yesterday that their team has no future.

Try telling the northern beaches diehards their high-flying Sea Eagles don’t belong in this competition.

The NRL has been down this horrible road of emotion before.

The game lost tens of thousands of fans with the departure of the North Sydney Bears.

The game suffered a public relations battering that took years to overcome when South Sydney Rabbitohs fans marched on the streets to save their club.

Surely the NRL will tell the Nine network where to shove its proposal.

There is a much easier solution just north of the border.

If any team is to go, surely it’s the Gold Coast Titans. This franchise brings nothing to the competition. Sounds harsh, but it’s true. The Titans are hopeless and have the smallest membership in the competition.

Their crowds have now halved since the excitement of their early days in the new Robina stadium.

You walk around the town and no one is wearing their jersey.

The locals appear to have no love or pride for the team.

This isn’t to say the Sydney clubs can just sit back and be guaranteed long-term security for the next 50 years. No one should get an indefinite gold pass.

They all need to lift because the crowd figures over the past five years are not good enough.

Only one Sydney club, the Canterbury Bulldogs, average more than 15,000 fans in the past five years. The Sea Eagles average just 10,486.

The Sharks, Dragons and Canberra Raiders are just 12,000.

St George Illawarra have had two crowds of 6000 and 7000 this year. They should not survive on their great brand alone. This isn’t an A-grade competition.

Understandably, the television networks want big-match atmosphere that an intercity rivalry would bring to Brisbane, like it does for the AFL in Perth and Adelaide.

If the Titans are to survive, the best option is a 17-team competition. In an era where player welfare has become so important, the odd number would give each team two byes.

The negative is that the game has to find another $13 million each year as a grant for the extra team. Plus there is the old argument of trying to find another 30 quality players.

Sydney’s nine clubs will not survive forever. One or two will eventually go broke and be forced out.

At least their fans won’t be blaming the NRL or the TV networks. It will be their own fault.

    Sigh... same ****, different day.

FOff Buzz. Come here and say that to our faces.
Our crowds are great really for the season we have had.
    There’s plenty of love there.
Just look at our 2016 crowds when we were fringe top 8 and 2009-2010 when we were contenders.
    Very annoying.
