Default Brian Canavan announced as new Titans COO

    Brian Canavan appointed as COO
    Fri 22nd January, 02:47PM

Aquis Gold Coast Titans today announced the appointment of respected senior club executive, Brian Canavan, to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer.

The creation of this role and the streamlining of the club’s administrative structure is the final component of the internal review of the club’s operations that began 18 months ago.

The new structure places the club on a more commercially focused and efficient footing with three key departments covering all aspects of the club’s operations – Chief Operating Officer (including football), Commercial and Finance.

Chief Executive Officer, Graham Annesley, lauded Brian’s appointment is a major coup for the Titans given his extensive experience in football operations, development and the administration of the game at the elite level.

“Brian is not only an experienced Rugby League administrator, he is also a quality individual who will further add to the public credibility of this club as we continue to rebuild and improve”, Mr Annesley said.

“Over the course of his 18 years at the Roosters, Brian has been an integral part of the management of one of the most successful clubs in the game. His acquisition by the Titans is as important as any other made in the club’s short history.”

Brian, who grew up on Queensland’s Darling Downs, is a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies (education) graduate with a Rugby League Level 4 Coaching Certificate and a post graduate certificate in sport medicine.

Following a 10-year teaching career he became involved in rugby league, working with Queensland and National Rugby League clubs, Queensland Maroons State of Origin and rugby league’s governing bodies. His involvement in the sport has covered the areas of management, senior coaching, strength and conditioning and junior participation development.

In recent times Brian was Chief Executive Officer of Sydney Roosters club before becoming a special projects consultant for the Australian and National Rugby Leagues, working with national and state governing bodies. He returned to the Roosters in late 2012 as Chief Operating Officer, Football.

Brian’s starting date will be confirmed in coming days but it is hoped to have him on board as soon as possible after his relocation from Sydney.

    Brian Canavan’s resume

This is a great get for us. When you look at other struggling clubs we are really doing a better job of recruiting the right people in the back office. We should see some results this year for sure.

Spot on Bayside. First sort out the management and then sort out the roster.

Think we will see some great recruitment for 2017 if we can stay out of negative headlines.

He should bring Guerra, Napa and SKD with him. Just joking but this is excellent news for the club.

Major management shake up at Titans

THE Gold Coast Titans have pulled off a major coup, recruiting respected long-time Sydney Roosters executive Brian Canavan.

Canavan has been appointed to the newly created role of chief operating officer and will begin work at the Titans as soon as possible.

His experience will be vital in helping turn around a difficult recent period for the club on and off the field.

Gold Coast chief executive Graham Annesley hailed Canavan’s signing “as important as any other made in the club’s short history”.

“Brian is not only an experienced rugby league administrator, he is also a quality individual who will further add to the public credibility of this club as we continue to rebuild and improve,” Annesley said.

FORMER NSW Origin and Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi has been appointed Gold Coast Football Operations manager as part of an overhaul of management positions at the Titans today.

Laffranchi had been holding the position in an interim role since Scott Clark resigned last year in the wake of the James Roberts contract fiasco.

Foundation employee and Head of Operations and Media Ian Buchanan is the other major change, with the club announcing he will leave the Titans and be replaced by a new Chief Operating Officer to be confirmed later today.

Buchanan had been with the Titans since July 2005, immediately after the club was granted a licence by the NRL.

The management shake up is part of the ongoing restructure of the club business over the past 12 months since the NRL took full ownership.

“Everyone Ian has worked with both internally and externally knows exactly what an honourable and decent person he is and his constant presence will be sorely missed, although we still hope to see him regularly and he will always be welcome at Titans’ games and events whenever he would like to attend”, CEO Graham Annesley said.

Buchanan said he was leaving the club with mixed emotions.

“I am both incredibly sad and happy to be leaving the club I helped create, as the time is right for change and a new opportunity awaits both personally and professionally,” Buchanan said.

“My long tenure with the club has seen some amazing highlights and some very ordinary lowlights. Over everything else though the thing which stands out most is the resilience of this club and the brand behind it.

“My team will always be the Titans and I think that there are only good times ahead for the club and those that support it. I wish the board the staff the players and fans of the Titans the very best of success for the future.”

Hopefully Laffrachi doesn't forge signatures haha

But this is all round good news for the club. Great stuff. Moving forward in our management.

That's a pretty good endorsement. Sounds like things are on the up and up for the behind the scenes. Once this is sorted it will flow to on field.

Agree with you there JB. This endorsement from Maloney will go along way in the way some players will see the Titans going forward as a destination club.

What a fantastic pickup for the club. This is what I like to see. After the DCE/Roberts saga its going to be hard to get some great signing news before the start of the 2016 season. What I love about his is FINALLY our management and back of house are starting to pick up some momentum. Surely we must look like a must more attractive club for 2017 if we finally get our ducks in a row off the field. Never thought I would say this but well done Titans management!!!!

A great pickup for the Titans and this bloke also would know how to "manage" a salary cap bearing in mind his Roosters experience.
I see he is to work to Graham Annesley and I would think he would know far more about running an NRL club than our CEO. Obviously from their time at the NRL together they must work well together so he is very welcome.

Can't say I've heard of him. Though his credentials do sound fairly promising. Possibly our best recruitment in recent times.

Canavan goes back to the days when Dennis Ward raped and pillaged the schools system to get the best development coaches in play ... he is a great signing although a bit long in the tooth some may argue but very welcome at the Titans and back to Queensland too.

The unmentioned question is who will become media manager with the largely ineffectual Buchanan's move? Not Canavan's bag nor Annersley's but getting rid of him is a big plus, imho.
Four reasons to escape to Queensland: Sun, Surf, Sand & the Titans.

Pretty well what my opinion was when I read it. Just hope the broom is still going through the place, where it's needed.
