Shannon Walker back training at Gold Coast Titans ahead of 2016 NRL season
TRAVIS MEYN | The Courier-Mail
HE is one of the fastest men to have graced the NRL and now Shannon Walker has walked out on an Olympic Games berth to chase a second crack at rugby league.
Walker is trialling for an NRL contract with the Gold Coast Titans, just months before the Australian Rugby Sevens team for next year’s Rio Olympics is finalised.
His decision is in contrast to rugby superstars Sonny-Bill Williams and Quade Cooper, who will switch to the seven-man format just to play in the Olympics.
Walker looked in top shape when he hit the training paddock with the Titans for the first time on Tuesday.
Gold Coast officials were tight-lipped about the speedster’s return but it’s understood he is in a prime position to play in next year’s Auckland Nines pre-season tournament.
Walker played four NRL games for the Titans between 2008-10 but struggled to make his mark on the competition, mainly due to recurring injuries.
He signed with the Australian Rugby Union in 2011 to play the seven-a-side format but injuries thwarted most of his time in the code.
Walker has signed with the Intrust Super Cup’s Tweed Heads Seagulls for 2016 and coach Aaron Zimmerle said the lightning quick fullback hadn’t lost his talent.
“Athletically and physically, he looks super,” he said.
“Sevens is an intense training regimen. They train really hard even though the game is so condensed.
“The transition to 80 minutes will be interesting but he has natural gifts that don’t go away.
“He has speed, evasion and the ability to break tackles.
“He could do it when he was 18 and he’s only 26 now. He’s far from being past his best.”
Walker’s young family stayed on the Gold Coast while he toured around the world with the sevens squad.
The Titans tried to sign Walker for a cameo appearance in the inaugural Auckland Nines in 2013 but the ARU blocked the move.
At his best, Walker is a damaging fullback and if his body holds up he could be a danger man for the rebuilding Titans.
“He’s such an excitement machine,” Zimmerle said.
“He still craves rugby league. His family is based on the coast and he was keen to have an opportunity to play.
“He had to make a decision to persist with sevens or come back home.”
Walker’s return to rugby league was praised by former Titans captain Scott Prince, who has experienced his breathtaking speed first hand.
“Now you’re getting my attention ... game breaker on his day! #injuryfree,” Prince tweeted.
Cool, another bloke vying for the fullback position. That aside, I'm not prepared to write him off just yet. It'll be interesting to see how Henry intends to utilise him.
going off foxsports, apparently we are in talk with McQueen, however it will come down to if souths will let/need him to go.
Funny story from The Meddler....

TITANS MOVE ON MCQUEEN
The Titans have begun the process of attempting to bring Chris McQueen to the Gold Coast.
Foxsports.com.au understands the club met this week to look at their salary cap and how they could fit the South Sydney backrower in their squad.
McQueen returned to Rabbitohs training this week but, with the Rabbitohs signing Sam Burgess, it’s believed the club needs to shed some players in order to fit their marquee recruit on their books.
The news comes after coach Neil Henry exclusively revealed to foxsports.com.au last Friday that he was keeping an eye on the Rabbitohs’ financial situation.
A Titans insider has told Market Watch that talks with his management have already begun.
While the Titans are keen on bringing the 28-year-old north as soon as 2016, it remains to be seen whether the Rabbitohs would release the Queensland Origin representative from the final year of his contract.

WE WON’T TELL ... YET
Who’s the big name NRL player searching for a new home despite still having two years to run on his contract?
This player is one of the big names in the game but he isn’t happy with the way he is being used and wants a change.

Surely big name player means a quality rep player ... J. Bird, Holmes and Hoffman don't qualify but if it was Hoffman then no worries, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
This is something more like Tamou doesn't like coming off the bench or Tohu Harris hates switching between forwards and the backs or just off-season rubbish.
Four reasons to escape to Queensland: Sun, Surf, Sand & the Titans.
big name player means nothing when it comes to the newspapers... could be a fringe 1st grade player who hates he isnt in first grade anymore.
Big name player means a player with a big name so I'm leaning towards Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, or maybe even Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.
Dallin re-signed yesterday though so it might not be him, maybe he wants to play in the front row though and that's why he's looking elsewhere
