Default Gold Coast Titans Awards Night 2015

Who will win Paul Broughton Medal
    Mon 21st September, 10:54AM

It has been a season that has had its challenges but been one of individual and club progress, and tonight is the chance for the Aquis Titans, from players and partners through to staff, sponsors and supporters, to celebrate at the annual awards dinner at the QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise.

Several awards will be announced and highlights of the season shown, with the pinnacle award being the naming of the ninth Paul Broughton Medal winner, the NRL team’s best player award.

The medal is named after foundation club chairman and passionate league servant for over six decades, Paul Broughton. It is decided from a 3-2-1 vote of the coaching staff each round.

The award has been held by the likes of international players Luke Bailey (three times), Anthony Laffranchi, Nate Myles and Greg Bird (full list below).

    There are several obvious candidates.

James Roberts (pictured) played every match and equalled David Mead’s season try-scoring record with 16, with his form gaining him City Origin selection and an invitation to join the NSW State of Origin camp.

Ryan James was in career best form in the early rounds, gaining Country Origin selection while his rep teammate David Mead has been consistently good right throughout 2015, as was tireless front-rower Luke Douglas.

Aidan Sezer polled well in the Dally M awards during a rich run of form mid-season before injury intervened, Agnatius Paasi finished the season in tremendous form, Eddy Pettybourne was an unsung hero with his high workrate and aggression while Kane Elgey caught the eye in his rookie season, culminating in Prime Minister’s XIII selection.

Elgey looks a stand-out for the rookie of the year award while a prestigious honour that will be bestowed upon one of the players tonight is ‘The Preston Award’, named after wonderful club man and brilliant player Preston Campbell and given to the player who shows the greatest characteristics of the ultimate teammate or club man.

The under-20s players will vie for the player of the year, players’ player and True Titan awards and there are several deserving candidates including captains Shaun Hudson and Parahi Wilson, Hayden Schwass, Oshae Tuiasau, Braydon Torpy, Karl Lawton and Brian Kelly.

Other awards on the night include the Members’ Most Valuable Player, XXXX Try of the Year and the club’s community award bestowed on the Titans player who was deemed most committed to work in the community.

If Douglas does not get the Paul Broughton medal he should get The Preston Award. (Or both)

i think douglas was overall the best but he did tail off the last 6 or so weeks with errors and penalties.

Will be interesting to see. I think James will be ahead after 8 rounds, Douglas after 16, and most probably 26 rounds too. and wouldn't be suprised to see Pettybourne and LG in the top 5.

interested to see how it pans out

Are we going to re-sign Hayden Schwass or not? Wouldn't be a good move if we let him go..

Not at this stage. Nor him or Daniel have been offered NRL deals and have signed with Burleigh for 2016

Haydo will be very happy with the award but getting beat by 1 point by Hudson is like Falloon win last year

Hudson NYC Player of the Year

Gold Training under-20s team captain Shaun Hudson has taken away the NYC Player of the Year award after an outstanding season with Ben Woolf’s young team.

Hudson, in his last season in the NYC competition, was the team’s top point-scorer and most consistent player, scoring 100 points from 12 tries and 26 goals in his 20 matches.

The rugged utility back, who played most of the season at fullback, was an inspirational leader who competed hard on every play and thrust himself into the attack whether playing fullback or centre, playing a prominent role in many tries through his hard running or ball skills.

His season was a tribute to his attitude after missing the first half of the 2014 season after recovering from an ACL injury suffered the previous season.

“Huddo had a really consistent season and showed he was a very good leader whether it was from fullback or centre,” said coach Ben Woolf.

“He was it his best at fullback where he has a good knack of opening up a game with his ball playing; that’s where he was most crucial.

“It was pretty tight in the end with the voting but ‘Huddo’ is a deserving winner.”

Hudson polled 20 points in the 3-2-1 voting allocated by the coaching staff each week, just one point ahead of second-rower Hayden Schwass. Co-captain Parahi Wilson was third on 15, one point ahead or prop Oshae Tiuasau with fellow prop Max Elliott on 14 points.

    Voting:

    20 - Shaun Hudson

    19 – Hayden Schwass

    15 – Parahi Wilson

    14 – Oshae Tuiasau

    13 – Max Elliott

Previous NYC player of the year winners are:

    2010 – Matt Srama

    2011- Luke Page

    2012 – Sam Irwin

    2013 – Matthew Beddow

    2014 – Anthony Colman

No suprises here. Would have been player of the year as well if he didn't get injured.
