Default Origin heroes help PNG RL

    Ex-Origin greats help Cowboys

FORMER Origin Greats (FOGs) have rescued Chemica Cowboys from withdrawing from the SP Cup competition by offering A$50,000 (K113, 843.35) to provide them with a secure ground to host their home games.
FOGs are headed by former State of Origin greats Mal Meninga, Wally Lewis, Gavin Allan, Allan Langer, Chris Close, Gary Belcher, Trevor Gillmeister, Gene Miles and Greg Oliphant.

The chairman of the PNG Rugby Football League Sir Bob Sinclair said Meninga and Miles will be in the country for 2-3 days to help erect the fence and to host a fundraising dinner at the Kimininga Lodge to go towards the development of the new field.
The funds raised will go towards erecting a steel cladding fence at the Mt Hagen showground where the home games will be hosted in the coming semi-professional competition.
The funds were secured after Sir Bob personally negotiated the need with FOGs.
He said Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti on Wednesday made a commitment to give K50,000 for the fence.

Sir Bob said he was grateful of the assistance provided by both the FOGs and Governor Wingti adding that a secure oval will not only be used for rugby league but other sporting events as well.

?I am very delighted to see that the Cowboys are back in and I really appreciate the support by FOGs and Wingti,? he said.

?I told them (FOGs) that I didn?t want to see Chemica Cowboys out of the SP Cup like the Rabbitohs in the NRL games and that Mt Hagen is in dire need of funds for a secured oval,? he told The National yesterday.

Chemica Cowboys indicated early this month in a meeting with PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sir Bob Sinclair and chief executive officer Jeff Wade that they will withdraw from the SP Cup competition if they do not play their home games in Mt Hagen.

Great to see League helpiong League!

Now if only the ARl oops sorry RLIF would step in and become a lot moreproactive in developing the game. Need to take a leaf out of the RLEF book, perhaps it is time for the clubs and NRL to open their minds to the possibilities of these places.

FOGS Lend A Hand In New Guinea
    By Henry Morabang

There will be heavy presence of FOGS in PNG next week. Three senior members of the Former Origin Greats, Mal Meninga, Gene Miles and Trevor Gillmeister, will be in the Western Highlands provincial capital of Mt Hagen to help erect fence at the Kagamuga Show Ground.

The Kagamuga Show Ground was identified by provincial government and rugby league stakeholders as alternate venue for their franchise team, Chemica Cowboys.

The Australia Rugby League (ARL) through FOGS have made a commitment of A$50,000 (K106,850) while Western Highlands Provincial Government donated K50,000 to upgrade the field.

The assistance came as Chemica Cowboys threatened to pull out of this year's SP Cup competition because they did not have a home ground.

The chairman of PNG Rugby Football League Sir Bob Sinclair confirmed that Meninga, Miles and Gillmeister would arrive next Tuesday and will travel to Mt Hagen.

The official ground breaking ceremony will be the following day on Wednesday (April 5).

Sir Bob said the work had already started with the erection of post for the fence.

Apart from the Queensland maroons trio, Wally Lewis will bring along his Channel 9 crew from Brisbane to film the ground breaking ceremony in Mt Hagen.

He added 'King' Wally will then travel to Goroka to work on an advertisement with the PNG Sports Commission.

Sir Bob said the tables for a planned fundraising dinner were sold out and they are looking for more space to cater for extra people.

The dinner is on Tuesday night while on Wednesday, the FOG will visit schools and hospital in Mt Hagen City before a reception for the visitors at the Pope John Paul Oval.

With the fence up and standing, Sir Bob said Chemica Cowboys should host their games during the third round of the SP Cup competition.

Meanwhile, Sir Bob and his deputy Albert Veratau will attend the International Rugby Football League meeting at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on May 4.
