North Queensland has received a boost on the eve of the 2006 season with hooker Aaron Payne re-signing until the end of 2008.
Since debuting for the Cowboys in 2002, Payne has played 62 games for the 2005 grand finalist.
"It's great news for Aaron and the club to retain such a talented player," Cowboys coach Graham Murray said on Thursday.
"He reads the game well and is instrumental in creating opportunities for his teammates, and I believe that his best football is in front of him."
The Cowboys kick off their season against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
