Gold Coast Titans hope Kiwi prop Nate Peteru fits as Nate Myles’s replacement
PETER BADEL THE SUNDAY MAIL (QLD) JULY 12, 2015 12:00AM

NATE Myles is quitting the Titans, but Gold Coast are set to unearth a new Nate as they fight to keep their finals hopes alive on Monday night.

Hulking Kiwi prop Nate Peteru is in the frame to make his Titans debut just a week after buying a one-way ticket to Australia following his release from the Warriors.

The 105kg enforcer was not named in the Titans’ 17-man squad but could be a late inclusion for the crucial clash with the Sea Eagles.

Peteru has begun training with the Titans’ senior squad and his 190cm frame would be a handy weapon.

The Titans have had success with offshore recruits, with former Warrior Agnatius Paasi clinching a new two-year deal on Friday after arriving before the season as a triallist.

Peteru played alongside Paasi in the Warriors’ under-20 side in 2011 and now the strapping recruit is hoping the pair can forge a long-term alliance on the Gold Coast.

Titans coach Neil Henry said Peteru brought youth, size and aggression to a pack that will include Raiders recruit David Shillington next year.

“Nathaniel has good potential,” Henry said. “I thought he could be a handy buy for us, so we got him just before the (June 30) deadline.

“His mum lives in Brisbane so he’s got a support network over here. He’s only on second-tier money at the moment with a view to the future so this is a chance for him to impress.

“He’s got good leg speed … plays nice and direct and there is some power in what he does.

“He also has an offload and a pass in his game, which gives us a point of difference. He’s not just a battering ram. He carries the ball and that’s what we need.”

lol I get -1'd by Sam for that?

I was being completely honest, I've never even heard of the guy. Kinda hard to expect someone so young to fill the shoes of someone whose done it all before.

Anyway back on topic I really don't like our chances against the Sea Eagles on Monday. Too many crucial players out, and the Eagles have recently shown much better form than the start of the year. Tipping the Eagles but ofc I hope I'm wrong.

TitanSam is a hardcore thumb-downer, he even thumbed me down once because I mentioned that some of us had real inside info and he threw his toys - don't take it personally GT101

I'm looking forward to seeing Peteru get his opportunity. I've heard of him a lot over here and he is pretty much the Paasi of 2015 for the Warriors (their best cup player but NRL Props too good to crack grade).

I'm not particularly fond of our chances but will be glad to see the boys back on the paddock after a bye Round

Jamie Lyon to play his 200th Manly game
    http://www.sbs.com.au/

Manly captain and two-time premiership winner Jamie Lyon will rack up his 200th appearance for the Sea Eagles in Monday's clash

When asked why he loves playing in the NRL, Manly captain Jamie Lyon answers with tongue firmly in cheek: "Probably the spare time to play a bit of golf, I'd say."

The Wee Waa junior, part-time pig hunter and unabashed golf enthusiast will amass his 200th appearance for the Sea Eagles on Monday against Gold Coast, and says his devotion to club burns as strong as ever.

"It's a massive part of my life, I've been here for a few years now," said the 33-year-old.

"I love the club, the tradition of the place and hopefully (I'll) do a couple more years here and still be successful."

Since his debut for Manly against round one 2007, Lyon has gone on to win two premierships with the Sea Eagles in 2008 and 2011.

He has also represented New South Wales on 10 occasions, and Australia eight times.

Although this year he has been hampered by minor injuries, Lyon's return to the Manly line-up last week oversaw a comfortable 28-16 win over Cronulla, to keep them in the hunt for their 11th successive finals appearance.

Lyon has another year left on his deal, but hopes to continue beyond that.

"That'll be the gameplan, to play as long as I can, and hopefully play some good footy in between that as well," said Lyon, who coach Geoff Toovey said could be switched from the centres to five-eighth to cover for the loss of Kieran Foran next season.

Manly hooker Matt Ballin was effusive in his praise of the Manly captain.

"I feel privileged to be involved in the game he's going to be playing this weekend," Ballin said.

"I've always watched him, coming through the ranks and playing first grade with him, and I admire how he handles himself on and off the field, he's a great person for the game of rugby league."

Titans fans warned booing Daly Cherry-Evans might only serve to fire the Manly ace up
    http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/

DALY Cherry-Evans’ first coach has warned Gold Coast fans to boo him at their peril as Manly’s $10 million man prepares for his grudge match with the Titans.

Cherry-Evans will be public enemy No.1 when he runs onto Cbus Super Stadium on Monday night — exactly 40 days after he sensationally reneged on his $4 million deal with the Titans.

Titans mentor Neil Henry said he held no ill-will towards Cherry-Evans, but many Coast fans will be less forgiving after the Manly ace’s bombshell left the club’s recruitment plans in tatters.

Touted as Queensland’s next captain, Cherry-Evans was given a public roasting last month when Broncos fans incessantly booed him, 48 hours after he backflipped on the Titans.

Cherry-Evans could deal a near terminal blow to the Titans’ finals hopes, but the man who helped launch his NRL career admits a vitriolic reception could play into his hands.

“The more they boo him, the more it will motivate him,” said Craig Ingebrigtsen, the Easts Tigers coach who mentored Cherry-Evans as a 17-year-old at Wests Panthers.

“Daly will just turn up to work and do his job. He is the mentally toughest player I have seen and he doesn’t care where he plays, he will run out there and do the job professionally.

“Whatever has happened with the Titans has happened. In Daly’s eyes, he just makes sure he ticks the right boxes for his family and he will get the job done.

“Ever since I’ve known Daly, he has been a winner. I don’t know where he gets his mental toughness but even as a kid he wanted to be the best he could be.

“Daly is simply uncompromising, nothing fazes him ... nothing the Titans fans will do will put him off his game.”

While Henry is getting on with business, privately there are elements at the Titans who remain filthy on Cherry-Evans for failing to honour his word.

The backflip has had a seismic impact on the Titans’ recruitment-and-retention strategy. The club was prepared to lose Aidan Sezer to Canberra and when Cherry-Evans opted to stay at Manly, it was too late to prise the classy pivot from the Raiders.

Henry admits he is now scrambling to find a halves partner for Kane Elgey next season, but says there is no point being bitter towards Cherry-Evans.

“If the crowd makes a bit more noise, that’s good. I’m not too fussed about it,” he said.

“I’m not even thinking about it, it’s done and dusted for me. I haven’t lost any sleep over it. Daly made the call and at the time he went through the right channels.

“I knew. He spoke to me personally, so I haven’t got a problem with him.

“It did have ramifications for our recruitment, there’s no doubt about that. Our offer to Aidan Sezer would have been changed.

“Missing out on Daly affects your numbers with recruitment because it was such a substantial sum in our cap, so we have to get our recruitment right.

“The players aren’t too concerned, they will get on with playing footy, there’s no reason for them to fire up.

“There might be a bit of banter with the crowd, but I’ve accepted what’s happened.

“Daly has chosen to stay at Manly, they made an attractive offer to keep him, and now we have to look forward.”
