Trans-Tasman Test will now officially be the Anzac Test after the RSL grants permission to use the Anzac name

THE Returned and Services League has officially granted permission for the use of the Anzac name for next Friday’s Test at Suncorp Stadium.

The clash between Australia and New Zealand will be the code’s first official Anzac Test.

The authorised use of the word is one of several measures to respect the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli battle.

While the Kangaroos’ battles with the Kiwis have been dubbed Anzac clashes in the past they were supposed to be called trans-Tasman Tests.

While Anzac Day occurs tomorrow, Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said the 100th anniversary would be an important theme in the lead up to next Friday’s Test.

This week’s clash had been intended to be played in Turkey. The ARL Commission supported a plan to play near Gallipoli to mark 100 years since the Anzac Cove landing in World War I.

A ground 45 minutes drive from Anzac Cove was identified and Australia was to face New Zealand the night before the dawn service, in front of thousands of travelling Kiwis and Aussies but the event proved too difficult to pull off during an NRL season.

Suncorp Stadium and a crowd nearing 35,000 will still provide a great atmosphere.

Sheens found out in 2013 the effect the Anzac story and understanding the sacrifice Australia’s military made could have on the Kangaroos.

That year the trans-Tasman Test was played in Canberra and Sheens and the ARLC organised for Victoria Cross recipient Benjamin Roberts-Smith to address the team.

Next Wednesday at the Kangaroos official lunch, Air Commodore Robert Rodgers will address the team.

“When we were in Canberra a couple of years ago we went to a dinner with the VC medal winners from Australia and New Zealand and it was a great night,” Sheens said.

“Every player is different but I find most of them are genuinely interested in the history.

“This game will be more significant considering it is the 100th anniversary. This will be the first time, as far as I know, it is officially called the Anzac Test.

“The RSL has allowed us to the Anzac name for a once off. The guys will have a badge their jersey signifying the importance of the game.

“There will also be the team photo at Brisbane’s war memorial which again brings in the significance of the anniversary.’’

ANZAC Test representatives to play for the Charles Savory Medal

Australian and New Zealand representatives will commemorate one of rugby league's fallen ANZACs when they play for the Charles Savory Medal in Friday night's ANZAC Test at Suncorp Stadium.

The Man of the Match recipient will be awarded the medal in honour of Charles Savory, the New Zealand international who died at Gallipoli.

ARL Commission Chairman John Grant made the announcement at the ANZAC Test lunch at the Sofitel Brisbane today, which was attended by the Holden Kangaroos, the Kiwis, the Jillaroos as well as the NZ Kiwi Ferns.

"Charles Savory played for his country, then served his country, and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country," Mr Grant said.

"As part of our desire to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary appropriately, Charles was a fitting choice for this honour.

"He was a New Zealand international who was one of four Kiwis to join the 1911-12 Australasian team for the Kangaroo tour of Great Britain.

"He was also a baritone singer and the heavyweight boxing champion of New Zealand in 1914 when war broke out.

"Charles put all that behind him to serve in World War I and was killed not long after arriving at Gallipolli."

NZRL chairman Garry Fissenden said it was entirely appropriate that Savory's legend be honoured in such a tangible way.

"He was certainly one of the most colourful characters in the history of our game, and his story is one that will resonate with Kiwis and Aussies alike," said Mr Fissenden.

"While the rivalry between our two countries is always fierce, Charles Savory's example reminds us that we also have played and fought alongside each other over the years, as staunch allies."

Mr Grant also announced that the NRL and NZRL would donate $1 from every ticket sold for Friday's ANZAC Test to the RSL in Australia and the RSA in New Zealand.

Tickets for the ANZAC Test will range from $30 for adults and $80 for families. This includes curtain raisers between the Australian Combined Armed Services and NZ Defence Force, as well as the Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns.

Australian Kangaroos v New Zealand Kiwis
    Suncorp Stadium
    Friday, 7.45pm

A new-look Aussie side prepares to host a very familiar-looking Kiwi outfit for the traditional mid-year Test in a fixture that threatens to deviate from the usual script.

The Kiwis have struggled badly in the one-off mid-season Test over the years, winning just once – the second fixture, back in 1998 – and losing 14.

A usually-settled Kangaroos side, with the benefit of club and Origin combinations, has frequently proved too strong for Kiwi outfits that often feature players with little experience playing alongside each other.

Not so this time; the Kiwis are boosted by most of their Four Nations-winning squad being available and will feature no debutants to Australia's four.

That successful campaign in November last year included back-to-back wins over the Aussies; another win here would see them notch three in a row against their Trans-Tasman rivals for the first time in over 60 years and also jump to the top of the RLIF world rankings.

While halfback Shaun Johnson has been under fire for a slow start to the year and five-eighth Kieran Foran has missed games recently with a hamstring strain New Zealand have stuck with the players who have been there and done it before.

Dean Whare is out injured, so Peta Hiku will play centre and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck returns at fullback having not played Test football since the 2013 World Cup. Ben Matulino is also playing his first Test since that tournament, Jason Taumalolo is out injured meaning Tohu Harris will start.

Sam Moa is also back, as is Thomas Leuluai – who missed the Four Nations final through injury after playing the pool games – with Lewis Brown bumped to 18th man.

The Aussies will have no shortage of motivation headed into this one and will be boosted by the return to form and fitness, and return to the side, of Matt Scott and James Tamou.

The Aussies have four Test debutants: wingers Josh Dugan and Alex Johnston, centre Will Chambers and bench forward Trent Merrin.

Billy Slater's late withdrawal due to a shoulder injury means Greg Inglis again plays fullback with Michael Jennings joining the side at centre.

Johnathan Thurston rejoins the team after missing the Four Nations along with Luke Lewis and Nate Myles. Boyd Cordner, Josh Jackson, Daly Cherry-Evans and Ben Hunt are among the Four Nations finalists to miss out.

Watch out Kangaroos: Storm prop Jesse Bromwich is arguably the form front-rower of the NRL at the moment and Warriors bookend Ben Matulino isn't far behind. Each is running over 160 metres per week, making them the third and fourth most productive props in terms of running after Aaron Woods and Andrew Fifita. When you add in Bromwich's mobility and footwork at the line and Matulino's prolific offloading (an NRL-high 21 after eight rounds) it makes them a formidable prospect for the 'Roos forwards to deal with.

Watch out Kiwis: Despite the late withdrawal of Slater the Aussies have an in-form and familiar 'spine' of Inglis, Thurston, Cronk and Smith. Four of the best big-game players you'd ever want to see, but the one in stunning form of late is Cowboys halfback Thurston.

'JT' has nine try assists in eight games – second in the competition after impressive Panthers fullback Matt Moylan (10) and all bar one of those in the Cowboys' current five-match winning streak. He's one of those players that can turn a game in an instant, and even more so when he's getting some help from his forwards.

Key Match-Up: Greg Inglis v Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. There are key battles all over the park – Cronk v Johnson, Scott and Woods v Matulino and Bromwich, Luke v Smith – but each set starts with the fullback and each of these men will be hoping to be their country's custodian for years to come.

While Inglis's 137 metres and 3.5 tackle breaks per game are nothing to sneeze at, they pale when compared to how the Roosters custodian has started the year. He leads all comers for average and total metres with an absurd 235 metres per game. He has one more tackle break than Inglis this year and both have three tries, while Inglis (five) edges Tuivasa-Sheck (three) for try assists.

The History: Played 129; Australia 95, New Zealand 31, drawn 3. It's been a long history of dominance for the Aussies, particularly in the one-off mid-season fixture, but the Kiwis have won the past two – both in last year's Four Nations. Interestingly, New Zealand have won four of their past five at Suncorp – three wins and a loss against Australia, and a win over England.

What Are The Odds: Australia $1.35 v New Zealand $3.15. Nearly five times the money has been placed on Australia in head-to-head betting. Sportsbet punters don’t necessarily believe it’ll be a cakewalk for the Kangaroos though – the most popular winning margin is Australia 1-12. The Kiwis have more support at the line, and Alex Johnston and Josh Dugan have been the best backed players in the first try-scorer market. Latest odds at Sportsbet.com.au.

Match Officials: Referee: Gerard Sutton; touch judges: Anthony Eliott & Nick Beashel; Video Referees: Bernard Sutton & Henry Perenara.

Televised: Channel Nine, Live, 7.30pm (AEST).

The Way We See It: We can't see this being a one-sided affair either way. History certainly doesn't favour the Kiwis but has the tide started to turn just a little bit? With a number of good players in good form and plenty of continuity the unsettled nature of previous Kiwi line-ups is absent, while this time around it is the Aussies who are blooding new players and forming new combinations. They certainly have more than enough champion players – especially in key positions – to get the job done, and plenty of their own are also in form. No doubt it will be an enthralling clash – but we'll tip the Kiwis to defy history with a six-point win.

Well hopefully we get some better weather. Was horrible and the right decision.

We still had a blast at our HKRL party. I also got to watch Titans v Warriors on the big screen on Setanta.

    Sunday test feels just right

The Anzac test belongs on a Sunday afternoon.

It's the result of some freakish - probably once-in-a-generation - weather but hopefully today's match is an eye-opener for the NRL and broadcasters.

Test matches are rare and unique so why not treat them that way? It will be brilliant to watch the two teams play in daylight today, and the rescheduled kickoff is expected to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 additional fans into the stadium.

The Anzac test has always felt like one almighty rush. The two teams assemble on Monday and can squeeze in only two training sessions before the match. Test football, especially with the heritage of Kiwis and Kangaroos matches which date back to 1908, deserves better.

The extra time would also allow players to prepare physically and get over knocks and niggles. Several players across both squads played last Sunday in the NRL.

The test match should also be an event. Sure, it won't ever be on the scale of State of Origin - at least not as long as it is played almost exclusively in Australia - but it would be great to have the build-up across the weekend.

A shift to Sunday would also open the door for players to return from the Northern Hemisphere to play. It's unlikely but maybe another Henry or Robbie Paul scenario could emerge again one day.

A weekend game would also make it more feasible to stage the match in New Zealand.

The biggest opponents to a permanent change will be the clubs and broadcasters. NRL teams want their prime assets back as quickly as possible, and the timing of today's match means players will be in recovery mode until Tuesday.

And television companies are looking for the maximum audience, which is delivered via prime time. But today's test will provide a great lead-in to the news for Channel Nine in Australia, which can't be underestimated.

If Sunday is deemed too difficult - then at least Saturday night would be a good compromise for future Anzac tests.

Roos by 10 points. The drier track will help. Let's see if it's time for a change of the guard yet.

Sweet my stream is working. I was worried for a while. Really wish I was here. I haven't missed a test at Lang Park since the early 1990s.
