Yea MT. I think that is very true. They feed into each other. It's a shtick.

Still.... it'll be great to see Fox Sports be forced to pay through the nose for Rugby League after ripping us off for years and launching the Super League war.

AFL announces new TV broadcast deal with Fox Sports and Seven
    http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/

THE AFL has announced a $2.508 billion broadcast deal with Fox Sports, Seven Network and Telstra on Tuesday that ranks as the richest in Australian media history.

The rights deal ensures that Fox Footy will continue to deliver every game of every round including the final series (excluding the Grand Final), live to Australian fans across all platforms including cable, satellite, IPTV, tablets and smart phones.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan outlined that the new deal would begin in 2017 and expire at the end of the 2022 season.

The key components of the deal are:

    - The AFL will continue to have full control of the production of the fixture, including scheduling of the grand final. Seven and News spoke in support of a twilight grand final during a media conference, although McLachlan said it was devisive issue that would be debated by the AFL Commission.

    - The AFL season will continue to be a 22-match season for each club and a standard round of nine matches,

    - Outside of Thursday night matches and public holiday schedules and split rounds, the competition will have one Friday night game, two Saturday afternoon games, one Saturday twilight game, two Saturday night games, two Sunday afternoon games and one Sunday twilight game.

Pay TV rights have been acquired by News Corporation. This deal includes:

    - All nine games each week - every game of every round during the premiership season, to be broadcast live;

    - Across an average of two normal rounds of 18 matches in our regular season, Foxtel and the Fox Footy Channel will produce the broadcast for 11 matches, equating to 5.5 matches per round, while broadcasting the other matches live.

    - News Corporation has the right to sub licence one game per round each weekend, which would be played in the Saturday Eastern time zone slot of 3.20pm, to a free to air provider, if it wishes to do so.

    - With the exception of the Grand Final, all other matches in the Finals Series will be broadcast live.

    - In Western Australia and South Australia, Foxtel and the Fox Footy Channel will exclusively broadcast live three premiership season matches for each of the teams based in those states – West Coast, Fremantle, the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide – with those matches to be replayed on delay on free to air television.

“Our company has a long and highly valued relationship with the AFL, and has followed and reported on the game since its inception in 1858,” said News Corp executive chairman Rupert Murdoch.

“Aussie Rules continues to be a centrepiece in all our newspapers, Fox Footy, Fox Sport Australia and Foxtel. This deal secures and builds that relationship well into the future.”

Foxtel chief executive Richard Freudenstein said: “This is great news for Foxtel subscribers. AFL fans know that Fox Footy provides superlative coverage of their game, with both great match coverage and informative and entertaining magazine shows that cover every aspect of the competition.

“This deal builds on the strong set of rights Fox Footy has today and ensures that the channel will be the only place where you can see every game of every round, including the final series (excluding the Grand Final), live for many years to come.

“If you love AFL you need to be a Foxtel subscriber, and with our recently reduced pricing there’s really no reason not to sign up.

“Under this deal, for the first time, Fox Footy will be able to be broadcast on all devices, which means that if you subscribe to Foxtel Play or use Foxtel Go, you’ll now be able to watch all games on PCs and Macs as well as tablets, phones and games consoles.

“Foxtel is very proud of its association with the AFL and we look forward to providing an even better service to the League and its millions of fans.”

Let's hope we can get some more coin out of the digital and pay tv rights.

NRL lovers should threaten to pull the plug on Foxtel if they lose the rights. They are the ######## who got us in this position in the first place.

You should see the crap appearing now in the News Ltd papers today, led of course by that halfwit Rothfield. His story about the NRL being trumped blah blah but not really a mention that only half of the NRL deal is done. Now that Murdoch is p1ssed off about News Ltd companies missing out so far his journos have quickly realised that the NRL must be slagged at all costs. I assume Paul Kent will follow.

I know it's incredibly unlikely but I would be so, so, so happy if the game ditched Murdoch completely.

He has been using his influence to actively trash the game for two decades.

Absolutely and it will not be long where sports will stream by other means without needing Fox. If Fox lost the NRL I would happily cancel Foxtel as would thousands of others.
