Default No regrets for Mortimer in Titans switch

No regrets for Mortimer in Titans switch

Gold Coast playmaker Daniel Mortimer says he's got no regrets about his decision to join the NRL's crisis club.

Mortimer made a mid-season switch from then-premiers Sydney Roosters last year to join the Titans, in a bid to become a regular starting half.

That wish appears set to be granted in 2015 with the 25-year-old expected to partner Aidan Sezer as the Titans starting halves combination.

But you could forgive Mortimer for having doubts about his move following the drug scandal which has rocked the Titans in the past week.

Teammates Greg Bird, Dave Taylor, Beau Falloon, Kalifa Faifai Loa and Jamie Dowling have all been stood down as they prepare to face charges of cocaine possession and supply in a court next week.

The club has also been taken over by the NRL amid a financial crisis that threatened the very existence of the team.

Not that Mortimer is concerned about the Titans' future.

"The Gold Coast is too important to the NRL," Mortimer told AAP.

"There's been a few teams that have failed here but, especially now the Suns are up here, I can't see the NRL giving the Gold Coast to the AFL.

"There are a lot of fans, the games up here have shown that, we've just got to get them on board."

Mortimer says the best way to turn the club around is to dramatically improve a home record that included only three wins last year.

That's a record that has to change, Mortimer says, starting with the season opener at CBUS Super Stadium against Wests Tigers on March 7.

"A lot of these events do bring the best out of players and hopefully that'll happen next week," he said.

"It's a massive game for us, no doubt.

"This season, there is a focus on making CBUS our home and make teams not have a great time there ... have our fans confident that when they come to watch us that we're going to get a win."

Of course he has no regrets. He is starting halfback when he was playing reserve grade for the Roosters. Mortimer is a solid player but he just isn't starting halfback material. Having him and Zillman as our 1 and 7 doesn't give me much hope for good on field performances.
