Indigenous All Stars vs NRL All Stars

    All-Stars-Game.jpg

The Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars will return to its birthplace on the Gold Coast with the NRL confirming that the match will be held at Cbus Super Stadium on Friday February 13, 2015.

NRL Head of Commercial Paul Kind said the NRL was delighted to announce the details for the match’s return to the rugby league calendar as part of a two-year commitment to stage the game in Queensland.

Fans are invited to vote online to select the 20-man Indigenous All Stars squad, to be coached by Laurie Daley, to play the Wayne Bennett-led All Stars. Voting will be available at allstars.nrl.com from 6am Sunday, November 30. Voting for the Indigenous All Stars will close on January 9, 2015 with teams to be announced on January 19.

It is only a one-year return to the Gold Coast with the All Stars match to revert back to Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium in 2016 said Mr Kind.

"The Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars is a unique celebration of the diversity of the game, and we are pleased to confirm that in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland the event will be held on the Gold Coast next year and in Brisbane in 2016," Mr Kind said.

"Harvey Norman, who have supported this event since its conception in 2010, will also extend their partnership for another three years. It is fantastic that we can continue to work with them to keep growing this event for the Rugby League community."

Johnathan Thurston, 2013 Indigenous All Stars captain and a member of the Indigenous players' leadership group said the return of the All Stars game reaches far deeper than the 34 players who take to the field.

"I am really thrilled to see the return of the Harvey Norman All Stars to the Gold Coast next year. I have some very fond memories from the previous games and camps there and I can’t wait to go back," Thurston said.

"Not only does the All Stars concept provide an exciting game for everyone to watch at the start of a new rugby league season, it provides a deep sense of community and has a tremendous impact off the field.

"It gives our Indigenous players a special opportunity to celebrate our heritage with our people, families and friends.

"I feel privileged to be involved again and especially to have another opportunity to lead the Indigenous All Stars side. That’s a huge honour that I will cherish."

Since the All Stars concept was introduced in 2010, profits from the match have been invested in Indigenous community programs including mentoring sessions, workshops, cultural activities, assistance with learning, behaviour and attendance, self-esteem, leadership, communication and social skills.

The 2015 event will begin with a mixed Touch Football match, which will be followed by a display of the best in women’s rugby league when the women’s All Stars take on the women’s Indigenous All Stars. The NSW and Queensland under-16s will then play the curtain-raiser before the main match kicks off at 7.30pm.

A host of community-based events will be organised by the NRL’s One Community program in celebration of the All Stars event.

NRL All Stars likely to switch the Gold Coast for Brisbane in 2016

THE return of the NRL All Stars clash to the Gold Coast could be short-lived with the concept a chance of going back to Brisbane in 2016.

The 2015 game, which will be played on February 13 at Cbus Super Stadium, was launched on the Gold Coast on Friday with tickets now on sale.

It returns to the rugby league calendar after a year in hiatus and is back on the Gold Coast for the first time since 2012.

The first three All Stars fixtures, which were the brainchild of Titans founder Michael Searle and indigenous league legend Preston Campbell, were played on the Gold Coast before it was shifted to Brisbane for 2013.

And it may only be back at Cbus for 2015 with NRL head of football Todd Greenberg confirming a venue for 2016 was yet to be decided.

“It’s (contract) two years in Queensland,” he said.

“I’m not sure if we’ve landed that (Suncorp) for next year but we’re in Queensland.

“We’re all about trying to mix where we play our games.

“It’s clear it’s worked here before. It’s a great stadium and we’re very keen to play the games in the right spots.

“We think we’ve got a great spot for this.

“It’s been successful in the past and we hope it will be again next year.”

The All Stars kicked off with a bang in 2010 with a near-capacity crowd of 26,687 at the 27,500-seat Robina stadium.

It dropped off a little in 2011 when 25,843 came through the gates but bounced back with 26,039 in 2012.

It was a massive success in Brisbane last year with 41,021 in attendance and Indigenous All Stars captain Justin Hodges said the concept was becoming more important.

“For the older guys, you want to see the younger guys come in and see how important it is not just to win the game but for our people,” Hodges said.

“Hanging around the little kids and putting a smile on their face is the purpose of the week.

“The first couple of years we didn’t know what it was about but now we take it more serious.”

Just my opinion but I really like it, would love to see one from our club for next year.

It's the kinda of thing you'd love to wear around during a hot day in QLD, not something I tend to do with the modern jerseys.

Scott ruled out of All Stars
By Tony Webeck, Chief Queensland Correspondent
    NRL.com
    10:35am Tue 16th December, 2014

North Queensland forward Matt Scott has been ruled out of the NRL All Stars team to face the Indigenous All Stars on the Gold Coast on February 13 as he continues his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery.

Scott was one of a large number of high profile players who were unable to line up for Australia in the Four Nations tournament in October and the Cowboys are reporting that he won't return to contact work until February.

Fellow Origin and Test front-rower James Tamou is also out of contention as he recovers from neck surgery, his program prior to the New Year limited to physio treatment, walking, stationary bike and modified strength training.

Despite the All Stars disappointment, the Cowboys co-captain said his recovery is ahead of schedule.

"Strength-wise, which is an indication of how it's going, has increased dramatically over the last couple of weeks so really good to be able to get into the gym and do some work on it," Scott told Cowboys TV.

"I think it's ahead of schedule and I'll look after it over the two weeks off and do a bit more work so I hit the ground running in January."

While the Indigenous All Stars team is being voted on by the rugby league public, NRL All Stars selection falls squarely on the shoulders of coach Wayne Bennett.

Scott, Tamou, Cameron Smith, Jarryd Hayne and Ashley Harrison were all members of the last NRL All Stars team in 2013 who won't be at Bennett's disposal when the match returns to the calendar in 2015.

Scott's only All Stars appearance to date was back in 2011 when the NRL All Stars triumphed 28-12.
